The European release date & pricing for Rock Band was announced today. I took one look at the words/figures 'May 23rd - £180' and came to the conclusion that Rock Band will not be getting many European sales. There are 2 big factors in why Rock Band won't sell in Europe: the delay and the price. A third smaller factor is the availability on the consoles. I apologise that this editorial will mostly be based around the UK, but I know more about the thoughts and opinions from this area than anywhere else.

1. The Delay

Rock Band was released on 20th November 2007 in the US, then several XBL packs were announced for people to download, then they announced they were making a Wii version...all while we Europeans sat and waited, and waited just for news that we would get a version of it at all. They have finally announced that Rock Band will be released in Europe on May 23rd 2008. This is over 6 months later than the US release. When I first heard about Rock Band, I thought it was great and I couldn't wait to play it, but as time as gone on the hype around it has really died down, and I've become bored of waiting and my attention and excitement for new releases has been turned to other things. The GS UK forum is of very much the same opinion.

For example...

  • 'Yeah i was pretty bummed-out by this, it's not like it's a month delay which i could accept, this may take up to half a year to get to us and that is unforgivable.' - fishdalf
  • 'Way too late for me, they've missed the boat and I don't think I'll bother getting it now. They release it later here, and we will be charged more for the game and extra songs. Sorry but thanks but no thanks.' - jk80
  • '[quoting jk80] I have this feeling too.' - PhoenixMDK
  • 'I'm leaning towards not getting it.' - Dark_Dude_98
  • 'This game is almost dead to me.' - macacd

I'm afraid that EA & Harmonix have simply 'missed the boat'.

2. The Price

Along with the release date, the costing has also been announced. £180. One hundred and eighty fine British pounds. Let's have a look at what else you could buy with this amount of money:

  • A Nintendo Wii
  • An Xbox 360 Premium (for £20 extra)
  • A PSP (with approx. £50 left)
  • A Nintendo DS (with approx. £70 left)
  • 6 GameBoy Advances
  • 7 GameCubes
  • 2 Playstation 2s (for £10 extra)
  • 3 Xboxes

Why should we pay this extortion amount, when we could buy a whole new console, or several, with that money? This seems espcially unfair when you convert the price at which the US version costs ($169.99) into GBP...£85. This means that we are paying over double what it costs over there. (For American readers: our version at £180 would cost you $355.70). Guitar Hero was just about affordable if you split it with your friends, or got your parents to buy you it for Christmas, but I really can't see mum and dad shelling out this much money on one present, or you and 3 other mates paying £45 each for a game you would have to share between 4 people, you could buy a normal 360 game each for that price. I highly doubt that the cliche 'casual gamers' will be willing to spend that much either...Rock Band is running out of prospective consumers.

Here are some more quotes off the GS UK board to further prove my point:

  • 'I'm not paying that much. I was really looking forward to it as well ' - TepicPlug
  • 'I might still get it, we'll see how much it costs' - Dark_Dude_98
  • 'I doubt the average consumer will see that over the price tag.' - PhoenixMDK
  • 'the most I would have paid is around £100.' - jk80
  • 'I would expect to pay about £130 for the game and peripherals together, but this just seems far too much. I wan't this game, but not this much' - readingfc_1
  • '£180 :O Thats a complete rip off I really doubt I'm going to get it if we have to pay more for the game than an actual 360 costs ' - tamsj04
  • 'wow, 180 is just too much. I've been anxiously waiting for this game for 5 months but knowing the price....i think i may pass on this (or import it)' - HellsAngel2c
  • 'I'll stick with GH thanks.' - clyde46
  • '£180 for a 5 month old game and 9 new songs? no thanks', 'i'm fed up of being ripped off so i doubt i'll bother' - Jedi_Shearstone
  • 'Its a disgusting price...i couldnt believe it... they should be able to make it cheaper than that...right?' - Tom1243
  • 'The game won't sell much so will get price drops until people start buying it. I'd rather buy a Wii than this 1 game if it stays at £180. Even if there is more taxes to pay in good ol' Blighty no way does it justify the price doubling' - arfy2
  • 'wtf £180!! no thanks' - fenwickhotmail
  • 'If EA think people are going to be buying their games, they can get lost. Because of this I refuse to buy a single EA game and of course rock band until they sort this mess out.' - Dark_Dude_98
  • 'That is insane! That is more than half the price of a PS3 for crying out loud! I don't want to pay that, I might look into getting a drum kit from the US shipped over' - Caddy06_88

(There are many quotes just like this, take a look at this thread and you'll see what I mean, I just can't list them all as it would make this blog too long!)

As you can see, the massive RRP of this game has put a lot of people off. Let's hope theres some major, MAJOR price drops for this game.

3. Availability on other consoles.

The announced release date and prices are only for the Xbox 360, what about other consoles? Do they simply not matter, like how the European games market simply didn't matter when they were planning to make this game? This is ridiculous, first they exclude an entire continent, now they are excluding another huge portion of the games market? I think EA & Harmonix are finally realising the full extent of the backlash and are rushing to get this game out and just get it out on one console to 'shut us up'. Well, they should have thought about that before.

I'm not saying it won't sell any copies, of course there are still some people who are hyped for it and will buy it no matter what, but I think these will be dropping like flies now the price has been announced. There are those with more money than sense who will buy it. But what about gamers on a budget, gamers without a 360, young gamers who would have to save up pocket money for about 2 years to afford £180, 'casual' gamers, gamers without anyone who wants to split the cost, gamers who don't appreciate being charged double and waiting over 6 months for a game, gamers who thought they'd like the game but would 'wait and see' for a price announcement? I don't think they'll be buying it somehow.

- Zoë

[EDIT]: I was sent a link to a petition trying to get the price of Rock Band lowered, so I thought I'd post it for anyone who wants to sign it: http://www.petitiononline.com/RockBand/petition.html

A Arcade 360 is $250 in the states. I wouldn't buy it, even if I was a fan of the series. That just stupid. Why in the hell would EA give such a price tag. Specially them, when they are the publisher that wants to appeal to any and every gamer. Hopefully, they will realize their mistake and have a price drop.

We have been shafted. I wanted the ps3 version as well for the wireless peripherals. No one should buy this game until we get a serious price drop. Its just unacceptable. Vote with your wallet
Posted Apr 8, 2008 6:35 am PT
That article is spot-on. I'm still getting this though, mainly because I managed to convince my friend to buy this with me
Posted Apr 8, 2008 6:40 am PT
I wasn't going to buy it anyway but damn - that price. It has destroyed any chance of it selling at a decent level, I can't see anyone paying that.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 6:50 am PT
Interesting post. I wonder how many people are going to end up buying it with friends (as king-of-iceland suggests) or importing from the US, as the PS3 game isn't region-locked.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 6:50 am PT
Wow, missed the price tag before this blog. I'm so excited for Rock Band, but paying 180 pounds for would go against everything I... stand for? Maybe something a tad less dramatic, but you get the point. I was predicting a cost of around 130 pounds, which I would have thought was reasonable. I'd even go to 150 pounds at maximum, but if it really does go to market at this price, I'm seriously going to have to consider it. As much as I want the game, I'd just be contributing to the **** treatment Europe gets if I splash out for this overpriced package.

Great blog Zoe.

This game never appealed to me, I'd be more of a sing star person at best. But that price tag made me lol I mean even at a reasonable price I'd have given it a miss, but now the people who were really looking forward to it are gna give it a miss too unlucky guys but this is the uk you should be used to this sort of thing by now.

@Chief_527: Your arcade 360 costs £125, ours costs £35 more than that, which isn't too much, so how come one 360 game can cost double the price in the US, it makes no sense! I hope they seriously consider a (huge) price drop too

@Rath3rDashing: If you already have a PS3 I think the best thing to do is import, but it'll end up being more expensive if you have to buy a PS3 to import! I'm glad you are joining the 'vote with your wallet' crusade!

@King-of-iceland: You're lucky you have someone more people to share this with, only my boyfriend wants to play it with me and that'd be £90 each still which is far, far too much!

@Swannzie: Yeah, I think a lot of people will avoid it now, even people who really wanted it. In a way I'm glad because EA deserve to lose money on this, but at the same time they'll just think 'oh its not selling in Europe, we won't release anything there next time'.

@LozzaGS: I think they are the only two realistic options but having someone to share it with is going to take a bit of persuasion as it's still £90 each between two. It's pathetic that importing it all the way from the US even with shipping is still cheaper than buying it in our own country.

@PAJ89: Disappointing isn't it I can spend about £200 on a console, but theres no way I can justify spending it on one single game! EA needs to know, that they can't treat us like this! *stomps feet* it's just unfair and I hope people do the right thing, and not buy it until there is a big, big price drop!

@Jack_Force: I'm tempted by Singstar now, I only wanted Rock Band to warble my way through the songs! Yeah, the UK gets ripped off alot, and it needs to change, so by not buying this game, its a teeny tiny step in the right direction, one company might have to listen!

Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:04 am PT
Exactly. If it sells, it's basically an invitation to producers to rob us blind (not that they needed an invitation in the past). If Rock Band sales are poor at the current price, hopefully that'll show people that there is a limit. I don't want to see games bomb in terms of sales, but this really is a different situation. It seems like that's the only way the price is going to come down.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:12 am PT
@PAJ89: I agree, but on the same lines they might decide that because sales are poor that the market isn't big or lively enough to release future games, hopefully it'll work the way you're saying. I'm a bit of a pessimist!
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:15 am PT
My head is hurting now because of this. I hate this situation!
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:16 am PT
My thoughts when I saw the announcement: "23rd may? Sooner than expected, might get it when it comes out!"

Then I saw the price... "You're having a laugh!" (Or something which can not be re-posted on this site )

Agree 100% with the article, I tried getting in contact with EA via email - just to find out there is no email to contact them with.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:20 am PT
@Caddy06_88: Mine too, I'm espcially grumpy today because I'm at work so this has taken the biscuit!

@Dark_Dude_98: Yeah 23rd May was sooner than I thought too seeing as there was a post from Seb_Flyte saying he'd been in contact with EA and they'd said they were really far away from a release date. But the price, ha! It may be coming out at long last, but no one will be buying it! I doubt EA would listen even if we did e-mail them, they don't care about the little people, only the money we spend!
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:25 am PT
Im getting dead irate atm. I was just telling my friend from uni about this and his basic response was, he thinks its way over priced, but he will probably buy it anyway.

I just hope this isnt how the rest of the general public see this. They cannot be allowed to get away with this.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:39 am PT

@Rath3rDashing - I know, it totally destroys 'vote with your wallet!', people can't just be throwing their money around like that, what does it say about us? No wonder we are overtaxed 'here, take my money big conglomerate soul stealing company' lol on the bright side, should you give up all your morals. You can import Rock Band for PS3 for £107 (incl. shipping) from Gamestop.

Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:44 am PT
I was really really looking forward to Rock band but with the way us EU PS3 owners have been treated by EA/Harmonix I probably going to have to say no, its too much, I'm sticking with your main rival Guitar Hero. For the proce they're asking I can get an xbox360 which, with all its exclusives will probably give me enough, if not more enjoyment than rock band. Well done, you've just priced yourself out of the market
Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:49 am PT

@braindead_hero: They have indeed, at least you PS3 owners can import it from the US for like £70 less. But still, doesn't make up for the shocking treatment of the EU gamers!

Posted Apr 8, 2008 7:54 am PT
this is ludicros, how can they justify this at all.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 8:12 am PT
Very stupid move of them to set this price. They've just angered the core market who were looking forward to this and the 'casual' market who would have taken an interest and picked it up after seeing it will be put off by the laughable price. If anything I expect GH3 sales to increase from everyone who was holding out or anyone who wants a cheaper alternative once Rock Band arrives.

I never thought I'd refer to GH3 as "cheap".
Posted Apr 8, 2008 8:39 am PT
I've got to admit, the price is utterly ridiculous. I don't see how they can get away with it, but of course it is their choice what to charge for their game. It it always the same in Europe though, we always seem to get the original Dollar price in equivalent Pounds.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 9:00 am PT
Im really angry now !
Posted Apr 8, 2008 9:01 am PT
Awesome blog, and you pretty much summed up everyones angry angry feelings! As i said before, its just disgusting...
Posted Apr 8, 2008 9:07 am PT
"The Instrument Edition will be priced at 129.99 or 169 and will be a bundle with just the three instruments but not the game. The game itself will be priced at 49.99 or 69.99, wireless guitars are going to be 59.99 or 79.99, and the drum kits 69.99 or 89.99." I think this just more confusing. Gamespot just updated the info. Edit: And currently its only being release for the 360
Posted Apr 8, 2008 9:09 am PT
I'm shocked about the price. There's no way I'm willing to pay that much money. No game is worth that. I'd rather purchase a new system, thanks.

Great post, Zoe. You pretty much summed everything up for me!
Posted Apr 8, 2008 10:17 am PT
Nice work. I thought 180$ for Rock Band was nuts...but 180 Pounds? Non US - Non Japan gamers get shafted...Australia bans games...Takes out online without a mention(MoH Wii)...meanwhile they have to pay twice as much as us...

Btw Zoe is tied with Logan for my favorite name of all time. Good read.

The price tag is so high for one reason. The US economy is in a recession, the dollar is at an all time low. EA needs to make up the difference in capital. Developing and producing and distributing a game like Rock Band must have cost EA an inordinate amount of money. Since Europe is the economically strongest market right now they are going to pay more, to help EA offset the devaluing dollar. It sucks but thats how it is

The UK gets charged so much for products like games and other entertainment forms, simply because the already super rich companies at the top, know they can get away with it.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 11:43 am PT
For less then the RRP of Rock Band, you could get GH2,3 (both with the guitar NEW!) and still have enough left over for Singstar if you had a ps3.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 11:51 am PT
Don't buy it then. At that price you should be buying real musical instruments and starting an honest to god band.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 11:51 am PT
What was EA thinking!!!!!!
Posted Apr 8, 2008 11:59 am PT
If they would put the game with the instrument pack that would at least be something. But paying that much for a pack of plastic instuments without the game is just crazy. I wonder how many people wil go to the counter with the instrument pack, hear there is no game in it and bring it back?
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:07 pm PT
Mine costed me 400 Dollars and Im not crying. And it was due to import taxes alone, since there is no legal retailer so it doesnt has the local taxes, so I guess thats where your price comes too.
Let me say one thing. ITS DAMN WELL WORTH IT IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:07 pm PT
as a pal gamer i totally agree, missed the boat and made it too costly.
by the time its out im tottaly into other stuff, hype died. same thing for super smash bros only i will buy it because it wouldnt cost me a kidney.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:31 pm PT
Thanks for this blog post!
The price politics for Europe are making me mad. I mean I'm used to paying the same amount of euros like the game costs in dollars in America. But does it have to get this worse? I thought paying thrice the price for Patapon in Europe was bad but at least the game is not 240 Euro.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:37 pm PT
In the past there were so many days you thought "Man, it's tough to be a european gamer." but this one outdoes them all. Six months delay, more than twice as expensive - just ridiculous.

Shame on you EA, second big letdown after the Games Convention to Cologne thing in February.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:42 pm PT
It makes me sad to see that you guys are missing out on simply the best group gaming experience I've ever experienced. Last night a group of 4 of us played SSBB for a solid 4 hours, and within seconds of the system powering down one of my friends turned and asked "so when are we coming over to play Rock Band again?" With the exception of yesterday, we have been playing Rock Band every Monday night for going on 2 months now.

Speaking to the delay being an issue, I would say that it should be the opposite. The DLC machine is currently in full force with 81 songs that can be downloaded currently. It's incredible and only going to get better.

This really is the perfect storm of factors beyond the control of gamers that is causing the price hike. With the dollar falling fast and expected to continue, companies are going to start planning for that and using hot items in Europe to stay in the green.

I almost wonder if it would be cheaper to import the instruments from the states.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:44 pm PT
Ok maybe I'm being naive, but are we 100%, beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt positive that this wasn't a typo? That some moron didn't screw up his numbers? I won't pretend to be familiar with price comparisons across countries, but at a converted $350, I find it hard to believe. Hopefully, for the sake of all of you gamers across the pond, this will turn out to be a horrible mistake. Otherwise, you have quite a bandwagon of EA haters that would be happy to take you in.

I JUST DON'T GET THE WHOLE GUITAR HERO AND ROCK BAND THING...
GUYS WHO ARE IN BANDS WHO CAN ACTUALLY PLAY INSTRUMENTS MUST BE LAUGHING THEIR HEADS OF AT INDIVIDUALS JUMPING UP AND DOWN IN FRONT OF THE T.V WITH PLASTIC ONES..
ITS FINE IF YOUR KIDS... BUT COME ON GUYS.. IF YA LOVE MUSIC JUST LEARN HOW TO PLAY A REAL INSTRUMENT.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 12:57 pm PT
@Jbul, yea and I thought my Blog was really good I got beat by a concept that can be summed up in 1 mini-sentence. "Rock Band in Europe is expensive"

But looks like some good time and work went into it so I'm ok with that.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:06 pm PT
To all european people who want rock band. get it imported. its WAAY cheaper. it's so worth 169.99 cad / usd. not 180 euros. These companies need a worldwide release date not just one continent at a time.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:08 pm PT
apparently EA doesn't know the value of a dollar versus that of a pound.

i might not have gotten Rock Band here in the States to begin with, but now that I know how they're f***king you guys over, I'm less inclined to do so
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:12 pm PT
@DecadesOfGaming

You're looking at it the wrong way. I can play a real guitar, but mixing Music with a Game...2 things I love...how do you go wrong with that? I'm not as hardcore with Guitar Hero as most people are, but I still enjoy playing it. In fact when I get frustrated because I can't beat a song on a difficulty, I just pick up a guitar and play the real thing...Calms me down a bit.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:21 pm PT
I hate living in Europe waiting 6 months for a good game to come out. A 180 is a rip off for Rock Band unless if it's less then 90 or less.
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:28 pm PT
Nice work on getting Soapbox and luckily we don't have to pay RRP as play are selling it for 140
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:34 pm PT
Woah I am NOT buying this now Proper rip off!
Posted Apr 8, 2008 1:49 pm PT
^Price could go up before release, I pre ordered ff7:cc for 17.99 it's now gone upto 25.99, same could happen with rockband be4 release.
