So much has been said about game remakes lately . Fans wanting a final fantasy 7 remake and stuff . But is it good for games to be remade ? A difficult question with different opinions and no right or wrong answer . Like the movie bussiness there are some who love a remake and some who hate it . It all depends on how you interpreted the original picture, if you even did experience it...a big factor, in my opinion .

Nintendo has been remaking games for a long time now . Their handhelds like Game Boy Advance received remakes of the original Mario Brothers, Metroid and improved ports of classics like Zelda . The Metroid remake ( Zero Mission) in particular was a success in my opinion, because it not only was a remake, but expanded the whole experience in a good way . But older games are easier to remake too, of course . Let's look at more recent remakes .

The original Resi game was a blast when it first came out on playstation . It was an introduction to survival horror for many and received a cult status . When it was remade on Nintendo Gamecube, It succeeded in being everything the original was and more . It was a perfect remake . It proved that remakes CAN work , even for more recent games . No fan of the original game could say that the remake was less interesting than the original, for whatever reason .

Remakes can work . But how about a game that is to many of us more than any game can ever be ? I'm talking about the real thing of course, Final Fantasy 7 . Released on playstation in 1997 and introducing the mass to RPG . I remember many buying the game (the media campaign for FF7 was incredible) ending up like : what kind of stupid game is this : you don't even control the characters, they don't have hands and stuff !! But when going through those first difficult hours of character stats, materia slots and limit breaks ending up falling in love with something that hit them straight in the heart . I wasn't new into RPG's , but FF7 was a revelation for me . Never before did I play a game until there wasn't a single point of experience or treasure to be earned ...only to be hit with the hard truth that the game was over, finished ...

Anyway, with recent efforts of Square like FF7 advent children (incredible movie, IF you played the game) and Crysis Core , a lot of new questions are raised in the FF7 world and especially new gamers want to know what all the fuss is about . I understand their need for a remake , as the original game cannot achieve anymore what it did in the past today . That is why a digital download on PSN or XBLA wouldn't work in my opinion . It would be very unwise to do because everyone would end up disapointed .

But a remake would work for sure, if done correctly . It would however be quite a burden to bear for Square, as their fame or shame depends on it . IF it works, and the remake is a hit , many others will follow the example and the market would see numerous remakes , some good and some not .

FF7 is a game that, if remade , never can achieve what it has done back in 1997 . And the die hard fans will never accept a remake . It's like The Lord of the Rings . The movies are incredible but the books were better...see what I mean .

Anyway . Enough medidating for today . Feel free to discuss with me about remakes of games ...

To me, remakes in games and remakes in movies are too different. A proper remake for a movie is so hard to do because they're using actual people. These people bring their roles to life and trying to emulate that is hard and can easily backfire. Games on the other hand may not be so hard. The real time they muck up is when they try to add too many new features to the game. As long as the graphics are upgraded, gameplay stays in tact and story is still the same, I think a successful FF7 game can be made.
I'd love to play FF7. I didn't get a chance to. I'd settle just for it being released on PSN.

You're right but the characters in FF7 have such strong personalities that even redrawing them sometimes takes away much , like many found the CGI Sephiroth and Cloud not as strong in Advent children than in the original game . I retried the game in its old glory last week (I still have a copy of every main FF game) and it has grown old today, its graphics being unbearable on a HDTV ...

Remaking it for the PSP would be I think a very smart decision on square enix's part. Afterall, they've already demonstrated they can make good ports on the PSP.
