Murdoch is a huge mighty engine who pulls freight. He loves his job very much and couldn't think of any other job to do. One day, he was resting in the yard when Sir Topham Hatt came to see him. "There are many fish that have been caught in the fishing village that must be taken to market. You must help Arthur with the cars." Murdoch never met Arthur before and was excited to meet somebody else. "Yes sir!" he said happily. "That's a good engine", said Sir Topham Hatt kindly,"off you go now." Murdoch puffed away. In no time at all, he arrived at the fishing village. Arthur was waiting patiently for him. "Hello!" Arthur chuffed politely,"what's your name?" "My name is Murdoch. I'm here to help out with the fish." "Well, now that you're here, lets get started." The two engines got to work immediately. Murdoch gathered many vans together to make a long train. Arthur puffed up, he was very eager to get the fish delivered . "Come on Murdoch!" whistled Arthur, "work faster! We must get the fish to market on time!" He continued shunting. Murdoch stopped and thought for a second, then he went about his work. Later when he was getting a drink, Arthur came up again. "Hurry up!" he puffed impatiently, "we don't have time to waste, you must work harder!" Murdoch grew annoyed, but continued taking on water. Then later, when he was resting in a siding, Arthur pulled up alongside and commanded him to stop lazing about and steamed off. Murdoch was very cross, he let off steam loudly and angrily. "I'll show him!" he thought. Murdoch backed down onto his long heavy train ready to start. "Now Murdoch, remember to go slow, the line is very bumpy, and go slow on the sharp curve." Arthur warned. But Murdoch didn't listen and he hurried away. Murdoch rushed down the line, he was thinking about Arthur and was going too fast. He made a run for Gordon's Hill. The vans suddenly saw a chance for mischieve. They waited till the got to the top. "Go at it Murdoch!" called his driver as he climbed the steep hill. At last, he reached the top of the hill and started his way down, this was the signal for the vans. "On! On! On!" they cried. They surged violently against Murdoch and plummeted down the hill with the vans screaming and laughing behind him. "I must stop! I must stop!" he groaned. He sped down the bumpy line and rattled violently over the track. Murdoch wavered and wobbled dangerously. Up ahead was a sharp curve, Murdoch's driver reduced steam and braked hard, but it was too late. His driver and fireman jumped clear as Murdoch flew off the rails, his first van broke into pieces and fish flew all over him. The driver found a nearby telephone and called for help. Edward brought Rocky to clear up the mess and lift Murdoch back on the rails. "Don't worry Murdoch. We'll have you back on the tracks in no time!" said Rocky. Murdoch puffed slowly the rest of the way. When he got there, he found Arthur. He had heard about the accident and apologized for ordering him around. "It's alright." Murdoch smiled. And the two freight engines became the best of friends. Now Murdoch often helps Arthur when there are lots of fish caught, and Arthur helps with Murdoch's work too. But from that point on, they've learned to work together and haven't argued since.
