But maybe not for the reasons you might expect. I've been having the disc read problem with games that have a purple back (vs. the normal silver back). After having a near meltdown today when Lego Star Wars wouldn't load, I decided to do something about it. So I dug up a turtorial that stepped through fixing the problem. This involves removing the case, voiding the warranty, and for me personally screwing up somewhere along the way so that the damn thing wouldn't power up again. So into the garbage it goes...

PS2 Slim here I come!

wow, I hate when that happened to me. It was during Final Fantasy X-2!!!!!! But cleaning the lens actually fixed my problem. I still traded the thing in for a slim PS2; I mean that is the coolest looking console (not counting handhelds) that's out there.

i have a slim ps2 and an xbox. i got my xbox since it came out and i had sooooo many problems with it. all of the games would cut short during a loading screen and say "there is a problem with your disc it may be dirty or damaged" and i lose all my progress. i understand your frustration. you buy the damn thing for like couple hundred dollars and it can't read half of the games that's for the system.

Hey,

Please read my message that i am about to tell u people.

First of all dude, you should not of through ur ps2 away when u could of put the ps2 upside down then insert the disk then it will loadup, seriously it worked for me. I lended star wars lego of my mate & i just could not figure out how to play star wars lego so i started tilting the ps2 (+ BANGING THE DAM MACHINE) & it eventually worked when i put the ps2 UPSIDE DOWN.

So all u have to do it:

1) Make the Ps2 upside down while the console itself is still on.

2) Insert Any Purple or black Game disk: eg. Power Rangers Dino Thunder , Star Wars Lego while the ps2 is still upside down.

3) Press the blue eject button so the tray can go back into the ps2.

4) Then enjoy your game that u wanted to play.

Great tip for anyone having trouble playing balck or purple disks.

Also the problem with the "there is a problem with your disc it may be dirty or damaged" dude u could of kept ur games in mint condition. (This problem happened to my mate & i know his disks are all dirty so this means it will make the lens in the xbox dirty)

Yo my man
It won't power up because you most likely pulled the silver tape out of it's socket under the PS2
Just open the sucker up
Unscrew the screws next to the controller ports and any other screws holding it together with the bottom case
Once you do that lift the insides of the PS2 until you see the silver tape and where it goes
Simply put it back in
It has happened to me before
EDIT***
Also I just noticed how old this entry was
So more knowledge for you

My launch day unit stopped working in 2003. I opened it up with a knife (I didn't know it had screws) and pratically made it worse than it was. But guess what? EBgames accepted my broken PS2 on a trade-in and gave me close to $100 store credit! You should have done the same instead of throwing it on the trash.

I have the same problem with my Xbox. Maybe I'll crack that sucker open and try to fix it.

The xbox disc read error is most easily solved by replacing the optical drive. You can get them off ebay for pretty cheap. I've dismantled my xbox many times, it just requires a special kind of screwdriver (torx). It's real simple though - only takes a few minutes and it comes apart easily.

I feel lucky I didn't have major problems with my Xbox...

I've always had this fear that one day I'm going to turn on my GameCube and it won't work. I'd probably just cry...
