Raiden Project - A compilation of the arcade versions of Raiden and Raiden II with a few extra options like selectable difficulty and an arranged soundtrack. Was released in North America as The Raiden Project and is much more rare and pricey on the secondary market. I picked up this one for $15 in near mint condition.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins - I already had a greatest hits version, but I found this one locally for $3 in mint condition, so I thought, "Why not?"

Doko Demo Issyo and Koneko mo Issyo - Both of these titles are Pocketstation titles for Playstation that are essentially virtual pet simulators starring Sony's cat mascot known as Inoue Toro. $10 for both in mint condition.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Physical box with two vouchers, one for the game and one for some kind of Marvel digital subscription which I don't care about. Anybody who wants to play give me a shout on PSN!

Street Fighter Alpha - Original long box (all plastic variation). This makes my entire PS1 collection complete in boxes which is always nice!

Blood Will Tell (PS2) Review

I recently pulled out Blood Will Tell from the depths of my Playstation 2 collection to give it a go. I got about ninety minutes into the game and by that point I had enough of it. To put it bluntly: It was one of the most boring action games I have played in a long time. This was very disappointing to me because I was looking forward to it based on gmsnpr's recommendation.

This game is based on the the 1960's manga and anime, Dororo. Very intriguing story, in the manga perhaps, but in this game it is delivered with sub-par English voice acting and is told in a very long and drawn out manner as if it was written for a child. It is very aggravating being that I am a perfectly intelligent adult and I am making very obvious connections way before the stupid, dense characters are. To make matters worse the game's different mechanics between the swordplay and gunplay seem like they'd be pretty fun, but they don't gel together at all in that you are either slashing or shooting, but you can't mix them up together like you can in Devil May Cry. The AI is dumb as a box of rocks too. Most of the time there is absolutely no pressure to engage the minor enemies in combat and they can simply be run past with no consequence. The game was also way too easy for the duration I played it. When I battled the third Fiend, all I had to do was run around to his back and keep slashing because he was so slow. Others Fiends were more "difficult", but it was more based on the need to dodge their easy to dodge attacks and get a few hits in and repeat ad nausem. And no, do not try to tell me that I didn't play enough. If I have to slog through 90+ minutes of boring/easy stuff to get to the "good parts" then the game has some big problems, namely quality issues. Nobody is more disappointed than I am that this great idea for an action game was completely screwed up in execution.

I recently heard that jollyroger was having problems with Castlevania (NES) and I decided to upload two videos, one for Stage 4 and one for Stage 5, that offer tips.

That's too bad about BWT. I used to be interested in picking it up.
Nice PS finds though.

Whaddaya know? No sooner do you post this and I go and get past Frankenstein...thanks!

For a game based on Osamu Tezuka's story, you'd think the developers would do a good job with it.

How do you get the box for Marvel vs Capcom? Do they have them for the 360?
Posted Aug 17, 2009 9:41 pm PT
@legolas_katarn - They were only released for PS3 via Gamestop.

I'd like to get a box copy of Street Fighter EX. I got a disc only copy without realizing it.

I've watched some of Blood Will Tell and it was a pretty boring experience too.

I can atest to your Castlevania tips. They're top notch!

I played the demo of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and thought it was pretty good, but not really the kind of fighting games I'm used to playing....I'd rather play Tekken or Street Fighter over this. Good review BTW

I didn't know you could get PSN game vouchers. Is that only in the US?

Also, isn't Blood Will Tell that game where you have to get your organs back?
Posted Aug 18, 2009 3:58 am PT
So this voucher for Marvel vs. Capcom for PS2 isn't a disc, it's just allows you to download the game while having it paid for already?
Posted Aug 18, 2009 10:14 am PT
@pj24 - Well, you can only get them if they are specifically released otherwise to the PS Store with you! From the sounds of things, yes, this particular one is only in the U.S.

Yup, 48 body parts to be exact.

@majadamus - Yes!

Wait a sec, this Blood Will Tell game you're reviewing. This wouldn't be that one game where your dad sold your soul/organs or something to the devil and your leg is like some crazy rocket launcher thing is it? Because, that premise sounds really cool... it's a shame that it sucks, but I guess not every game ends up being all that fun.

Also, if they did a similar MvC2 thing on the 360 I'd probably buy it boxed too. The thing is, I like having things boxed. The problem is, I don't care about comics so whatever that bonus is, I don't care either. I guess I'll just download the game once I buy some points or something. I think I'll get it with Rez HD or Garou Mark of the Wolves but I'm leaning towards Rez since, really, I don't want to overload myself with too many fighting games all at once.

@neonninja - Yup, that is totally the story premise of Dororo which this game is based on. It is a very cool story that could be a great action game, but yeah, this one not so much.

Of course, you can pace yourself with the fighters. I may be extremely enthusiastic about the genre, but I'm not trying to pressure you into getting them.

I have described Blood Will Tell as a lot of things, and boring isn't one of them. I stand by my assertion that it's one of the best action titles that's been released on the PS2, but then, I'm not you.
Posted Aug 18, 2009 8:48 pm PT
@gmsnpr - Hey, that is your feelings about the game and that is fine by me. I never said you were wrong, but I just feel differently about it than you do.
Posted Aug 18, 2009 9:07 pm PT
It's not so much that I feel pressured or anything but moreso that I know my personality. When it comes to entertainment, whether it's movies, CDs or games I usually focus on one at a time. So if I get both Garou and MvC2 together I may end up neglecting them, whereas if I get them one at a time, I'm bound to enjoy them both as their own games. I may only spread them out by a few weeks, but as long as I can focus on them without having to split up my time I'll be good. Though, Garou is looking really good after I watched some gameplay on YouTube.
Posted Aug 18, 2009 10:47 pm PT
@neonninja - Garou is amazing, in fact, I think it is possibly the best game that was ever on the Neo Geo.

No biggie; smart people can have different tastes and disagree. I'm just surprised that you didn't have as much fun with it as I did. The point at which BWT went from intriguing to a must play for me was during the Mountain chapter--from then on, I was hooked until the last boss.

@gmsnpr - Did the it become "a must play" from the narrative or from the gameplay? If it was from the narrative then I could get that from the manga/anime of Dororo and it would probably be better told. If it was from the gameplay then I'd need some elaboration as to why.

The bosses got to be very interesting as time went on; out of 48, I think that there are only about 4-5 that are pallette swapped; the rest are unique and a lot of them are hidden. I liked the Slash attack system and collecting all of the different swords that you could find (either in the levels or as Slash attack rewards. The swords that you find aren't cookie cutter versions of each other--they really have an impact on damage, status effects, etc. I liked that your sword arms leveled up and got stronger as you progressed in the game. I liked the customizability of what special attacks you could use depending on your play style. I liked the control that you had over the Dororo character in single player mode, either sending Dororo to collect items, attack, etc. The attack and ability upgrades as you collect body parts were cool and changed the game each time you defeated a boss. The story was good, and I liked the breaks in the action every few levels where you played as Dororo instead of Hyakkimaru. There are bonus rounds after the main game, where you go through several of the previous levels as Dororo looking for coins. Plus I guess I'm just a sucker for bad-ass amputee samurai.

The thing that I didn't like about the game was that it lacked one of the following two features: either a "New Game Plus" mode where you could re-trash levels and bosses with your endgame version of Hyakki OR a Boss Rush Mode, where you could fight bosses again in succession. After you finish all the chapters, when you go back to the cleared levels, there are handfuls of random enemies to smack around, but no bosses any more and the levels feel empty after the game has been finished.

@gmsnpr - Thanks for your comments, they were insightful!

Too bad that Blood Will Tell couldn't stand up to it's unique premise it initially had.I know how disappointing it can be when a game like that comes your way.
