Today, 8/16/09, is the 32nd anniversary of the untimely death of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis. Here is a blog I did two years ago on the 30th anniversary of his death:

"I was in my room reading something, I don't remember what, with the radio in thebackground, set on an all news station. Then the Mutual news came on and the announcer went right to it: "Elvis Presley-is dead!" At first it didn't seem to resonate, but then he repeated: "Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll, is dead at the age of 42." That woke me up. I ran out of my room, radio in hand, and found my mom and told her the news, and then the announcer repeated it: "Again, repeating the hour's top story: Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll, is dead at the age of 42." Someone, my sister I think, was watching TV, probably a soap opera, when the network broke in with the bulletin. It was a dark day all across the nation, and to some extent around the world. 42 is too young, and 30 years is too long. We still miss you, Elvis."

That was also my very first blog on TV.com, so today is my 2nd blogging anniversary.

Woolsey got questions 1 and 2 right on my Rod Serling quiz, and there were no other guesses. Here are the answers:

1. He co-wrote the screenplay for what hit 1960s Sci Fi movie?

b. Planet of the Apes

2. Who was his first choice to host The Twilight Zone, before taking the job himself?

c. Richard Egan

3. He was the creator of what short-lived 60s TV Western, and, as a bonus, who starred in it?

d. The Loner, starring Lloyd Bridges

This is a good time for a short Elvis quiz:

1. What was his last movie (not counting concert documentaries and such)?

2. What movie remake was he considered for before being dropped because of demands made by his eccentric manager, Colonel Tom Parker?

3. What was his last #1 song, his only since the "British Invasion" began?

If these are too hard, check back in a few days and I'll add some multiple choices. Otherwise, add your guesses below or in a PM.

I was in college at the time, and I don't really remember the moment I heard. I was never a big Elvis fan, though I liked his musice OK. I think his last #1 song might have been "In the Ghetto." I know it was pretty big.

You know, Groucho Marx died just three days after Elvis. That's more up my alley. Congrats on your blog anniversary! Woo-hoo! I was the only entrant, so I am the only winner! I'm afraid I'll have to wait for multiple choice...

Ok, quick guesses here, no googling:

1. Change of Habit with MTM

2. A Star is Born with BS

3. "Suspicious Minds"...it's hard for me to decide between this or "In the Ghetto", not sure which one got to #1...anyway I think "Suspicious Minds" is a better song, so I'm going with it...

I was in the middle of preparing for college when he died. I wasn't too concerned about it at the time. I lived in Elvis country, and it was everything Elvis as far back as I could remember...so I think I was tired of Elvis by the time he died. It wasn't until later that I began to appreciate Elvis again, when I realized that he represented well a Southern heritage that has pretty much disappeared.

The king is dead, long live the king! I was 4 1/2 months old when Elvis died, but my husband was twelve years old and remembers vividly being at a little league game and one of his teammates coming into the dugout and saying "Hey, Elvis died!" I know the answer to #1 (Change of Habit, with Mary Tyler Moore). Not sure #2 and I don't want to cheat and google it. Hm-m-m, I would guess "Suspicious Minds" for #3. Great blog and we are on vaction at the beach this week so I just gave your Rod Serling quiz to my family. My dad knew Planet of the Apes but nobody got any of the others.

Hi IndianaMom,
I call myself a fan, but I'm sure there are bigger fans. I much prefer him to Springsteen, but to each his own.

Hi Woolsey, I remember hearing when Groucho Marx died, but I'd forgotten it was so soon after Elvis. Not too long after, Bing Crosby died, then Charlie Chaplin.

Hi Jokipper, I'll give the answers in a few days. Elvis did, at least publicly, seem to represent the consummate Southern Gentleman, a dying breed.

Hi Millerem,
I do remember it being an unofficial day of mourning the day Elvis died, though I seem to remember President Carter commenting on it. I'm honored that you shared my Serling quiz with your family at the beach. I could call myself Quizmaster, but that's a little premature.
