Well, what I thought would be a foray into the shooter genre has quickly become a long-lasting love. I spoke most kindly of Dead Space and when I finished it, I was left wanting for more. I perused our library of existing games and settled on Half-Life 2. I'm playing it on the PS3. We have the PC version as well, but I'm spending so much time on my computer for work that I can't bring myself to use it for gaming right now. So, what I give up in the graphical presentation, I am more than making up for by being able to sit on the recliner

I've decided that I really, really like to shoot things. That sounds a little disturbing, huh? Oh, don't be that way, I know that most of you like to shoot things, too. I just got the crossbow and there is huge satisfaction in that soft thwack followed by someone crumpling in the distance. I think my favorite weapon thus far though is the shotgun. It's very satisfying to shoot those head sucker things.

One aspect of the game that I LOVE is the puzzling. Stack some boxes up here, throw some blocks on that ramp, jump on the rocks to avoid the antlions - grr @ that one. It's not just a hack and slash or a plain ol' shooter. One has to think while playing the game. While that can be frustrating, it is huge amounts of fun!

So, as I delve deeper into the shooters, I'd like to know what your favorites are. What did you like about it? Let me know and you'll be helping me pick the next one.

Sorry for the excitement over something that is probably old hat to most of you who have been playing shooters for a while, but it's new and exciting to me!

~Toni

I love this game, even though I haven't played nearly as much of it as I would like. The only sort of disappointing thing for you is that you've started with what has got to be, in my limited experience, the best shooter, like ever. It's going to be tough to find something as good as Half Life 2 once you're ready to check out other games in the genre -- So enjoy it!

I love shooting things! Of course, in real life it wouldn't work out ('cos there's not really a reason to kill...) , but sniping someone in the VG world is pretty fun. I don't play a lot of FPS games because I haven't found one that fits me yet. One of the few ones that I did play (albeit briefly) was that Metroid game for the GC. It was suprisingly good, if not up to the standards of the Samus fanboys.

If you're enjoying this, wait till you get to Episode 2. Golly it's good! I was so disappointed when I found out Valve's 'big' E3 game was Left4Dead 2 and not Episode 3.

Metroid Prime, which is the one twilight mentioned, is fantastic though it's not really a proper shooter. It just oozes atmosphere. It also happens to be the only game I've ever seen to 100% completion! Apart from that, you can never go wrong with some good ol' Modern Warfare.

I recently discovered shooters as well; Why just early this year I started playing em' because that's around the same time I got my PS3. Shooting games are pretty fun, but platforming games will always hold a special place in my memories

Hmm. Because you enjoyed DS, I recommend trying Bioshock (although I never got into it); Call of Duty 4 (like Max said); Killzone 2 is supposed to be good;
and >> ***Bad Company***!!!
Should keep you tame for a bit!

*Emperor laugh* Heh heh heh, good. Gooood. Now you know the power of the dark side...

I made this same discovery upon playing RE4. Actually, I knew much earlier than that, but it was so viscerally satisfying in RE4. Disturbing? Nah...it's great therapy.

I'm not really into shooters....so I guess try Metroid Prime.

Half-Life 2 is a personal favorite too... I thought Dead Space was very good as well. If you haven't played Bioshock I would recommend it, and you can get it on the cheap these days as a platinum hit. High quality, creepy atmosphere and a good shooter. Resident Evil 5 and The Darkness would be two other good ones.

I've mentioned before that Half-Life 2: Episode Two is my favorite game of all time. Seriously, now, games are just not that good. It is so above and beyond anything ever made that I just can't stand it.

Episode One is more of the same (a lot of repetition). I'd skip it unless you REALLY wanted to play it. I'd hit Wikipedia up for a good plot summary and move on to the vastly superior Two.

Portal is awesome; play that ASAP. It's only like three hours and you'll want to finish it before you play HL2: Episode Two.

Bioshock is really good, and Unreal Tournament GOTY or 2004 (on the PC, naturally) are both excellent. Then try some COD, Killzone, and Resistance.

I never really liked shooters to tell the truth so they have to be really interesting to get my attention. I liked Halo because it was really the first one to get the controls right on a console. I really like BioShock for the feel and setting. I liked Fallout 3, but as a shooter, it kind of sucks. I couldn't get into the pace of half-life. There were no clear points to stop playing at.

FPS' aren't what they were to me when I was a young guy, but I do enjoy them. Personally CoD:MW really did suck me in. Halo 1 (not 2 or 3) for the reasons grig mentoned, and the story I'd add. Bioshock was amazing, and I really enjoyed an old xbox FP/nonshooter called Breakdown. I dearly loved Half Life 1&2, but especially Team Fortress 1 & 2.

Oh... and I was once one of the better players in the world at Action Quake 2 (kind of a precursor to Counter Strike minus the structure) and I still play UT2K4. I'll be in for MW2 if it provides real improvement over CoD 4. With WWII being so flogged lately, and so little in the way of innovation, one FPS blends into another at this point

Arggg! U beat Dead Space already! I'm still struck in that stupid space cannon in chapter 4.
I have HL2 on my PC but I haven't even bothered ripping the cover of it.

Ah Half life 2. Such fond memories. That game makes it easy to love shooting things.
Posted Sep 17, 2009 7:55 am PT
Like so many others, I'm going to say Half-Life 2 is one of my favorite games. Evar. I'd try and track down HL1 for the PC if you can.

I'd also recommend Bioshock. Another classic game. Call of Duty 4 is also very good, but it's all about the shooting, with no puzzle elements.

Yay, Toni has branched out of her comfort zone a little. Luckily they don't make you sick. I was always a big fan of "Operation Wolf," back in the day. I'll bet no one remember that one.

@mprezzy: Oh man, if you're talking about an old DOS based rail-shooter, I DO remember. That game kicked my *** every time, on the... I don't remember what level, the third maybe? That level when you're trying to shoot down incoming RPGs on a boat. Anyway, yeah, I remember but I was YOUNG... ya old man you! *runs away*

Shooting things ... aahhhh. What a good passtime. I might sound like a maniac, but it's just fun. I liked Dead SPace a lot too. I want to play half-life 2. It's supposed to be the funnest game ever. Shooters, let's see.... well at first I did like gears, but then the frustrating achievements and the game itself just weren't good. Fallout 3 had a nice shooter experience. Bioshock too. Dead rising had a pretty bad shooting thing, but it was a very good game. FarCry Instincts was very very fun. That's about it for now.

@grigjd3: Why the hell would you want to stop playing Half-Life? All night gaming marathons FTW!
Posted Sep 17, 2009 7:30 pm PT
@Frame Dragger: Yeah, I'm old, grab my cane and false teeth. Maybe now that I can't see because I'm so OLD, I can finally get past the second level in that old-school game like you.

@bluej33 Oh NOW you tell me I started with the best!

@twilightlullaby That is one that we have owned but I haven't played yet. It's now on the list though!

@AlmightyMax Isn't it great to get at least one game to 100%? I have a feeling I'm going to be joining you in the wait for Episode 3.

@tennis12master I have never been very good at platformers. I never, ever could do teh swimming levels in Mario!

@korino55 My daughter is playing Bioshock right now and is really enjoying it. I'll have to wrestle the 360 awy from her after I finish up HL2.

@eggmcmuff Ha! Dark side indeed! The dark side is great fun

@GeekyDad I STILL have not played RE4. We even have two different versions. Something must be wrong with me

@SquareEnixFan13 I never, ever thought I'd be into shooters. Have you tried them? I am going to ave to try out Metroid.

@polsci1503 I DID love DS a whole big lot I have Bioshock so that one will be coming up. I'm going to keep an eye out for the Darkness cheap (I'm cheap) and I already asked Matt to play RE5 with me.

@Aberinkulas I did indeed know that it's one of your favorites. I picked it to play based on your indirect recommendation I'll try out some of the others, thanks!

@Kleeyook I hated the cannon in level 4. It was hard, hard, hard.

@EarthThatWas I never tohught I'd say that Shooting things IS fun!

@johnsteed7 I'll try to find HL1. Once I find a franchise I like I typically want to play all of the games. I'm like that with a lot of things, even authors. Once I doscovered Kurt Vonnegut I read everything he wrote. Shooting with no puzzling is not always bad. Sometimes I don't want to think, just shoot

@mprezzy I know, I know, you've been trying to get me to try new things for years! I finally listened Sometimes I get motion sickness from the games. I tend to spin around a whole big lot trying to see things. I feel like such an idiot!

@Transilvanien I'm hloding onto Fallout to play this winter. It's one of those games that I know I'll be spending a lot of time with and I game a whole lot more in the winter when the weather gets icky.

@mprezzy - sadly, I remember Operation Wolf. I miss those arcade games with the fake guns.

@tprezzy12 - once you play CoD4 and enjoy it (and you will enjoy it) I wonder if you'll be tempted to try out the multiplayer. Once you travel down that path your gaming habits will change forever...

As long as you only feel the need to shoot people in video games, then it's all fine. Half Life, I just love, it's just plain awesome, no way around that. Want more shooters? Try these: Max Payne, Wet, Stranglehold, Gears of War 1 & 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Swear they do, but it's so awesome

LOL, I like to shoot things too Toni. I can tank Halo for that. The really weird thing is that my very first experience with a FPS was with Halo when I was in the Marine Corps. and I hated it. Then I got home and Halo2 came out and I admit I got caught in buzz & hype, but I ended up loving the game to death. As far as literally blowing things away though I give my dollar to Fallout3, you just can't beat a well animated VATS headshot.
