Well, what I thought would be a foray into the shooter genre has quickly become a long-lasting love. I spoke most kindly of Dead Space and when I finished it, I was left wanting for more. I perused our library of existing games and settled on Half-Life 2. I'm playing it on the PS3. We have the PC version as well, but I'm spending so much time on my computer for work that I can't bring myself to use it for gaming right now. So, what I give up in the graphical presentation, I am more than making up for by being able to sit on the recliner ![]()
I've decided that I really, really like to shoot things. That sounds a little disturbing, huh? Oh, don't be that way, I know that most of you like to shoot things, too. I just got the crossbow and there is huge satisfaction in that soft thwack followed by someone crumpling in the distance. I think my favorite weapon thus far though is the shotgun. It's very satisfying to shoot those head sucker things. ![]()
One aspect of the game that I LOVE is the puzzling. Stack some boxes up here, throw some blocks on that ramp, jump on the rocks to avoid the antlions - grr @ that one. It's not just a hack and slash or a plain ol' shooter. One has to think while playing the game. While that can be frustrating, it is huge amounts of fun!
So, as I delve deeper into the shooters, I'd like to know what your favorites are. What did you like about it? Let me know and you'll be helping me pick the next one.
Sorry for the excitement over something that is probably old hat to most of you who have been playing shooters for a while, but it's new and exciting to me!

Metroid Prime, which is the one twilight mentioned, is fantastic though it's not really a proper shooter. It just oozes atmosphere. It also happens to be the only game I've ever seen to 100% completion! Apart from that, you can never go wrong with some good ol' Modern Warfare.
and >> ***Bad Company***!!!
Should keep you tame for a bit!
Episode One is more of the same (a lot of repetition). I'd skip it unless you REALLY wanted to play it. I'd hit Wikipedia up for a good plot summary and move on to the vastly superior Two.
Portal is awesome; play that ASAP. It's only like three hours and you'll want to finish it before you play HL2: Episode Two.
Bioshock is really good, and Unreal Tournament GOTY or 2004 (on the PC, naturally) are both excellent. Then try some COD, Killzone, and Resistance.
Oh... and I was once one of the better players in the world at Action Quake 2 (kind of a precursor to Counter Strike minus the structure) and I still play UT2K4. I'll be in for MW2 if it provides real improvement over CoD 4. With WWII being so flogged lately, and so little in the way of innovation, one FPS blends into another at this point
I have HL2 on my PC but I haven't even bothered ripping the cover of it.
I'd also recommend Bioshock. Another classic game. Call of Duty 4 is also very good, but it's all about the shooting, with no puzzle elements.
@twilightlullaby That is one that we have owned but I haven't played yet. It's now on the list though!
@AlmightyMax Isn't it great to get at least one game to 100%? I have a feeling I'm going to be joining you in the wait for Episode 3.
@tennis12master I have never been very good at platformers. I never, ever could do teh swimming levels in Mario!
@korino55 My daughter is playing Bioshock right now and is really enjoying it. I'll have to wrestle the 360 awy from her after I finish up HL2.
@eggmcmuff Ha! Dark side indeed! The dark side is great fun
@SquareEnixFan13 I never, ever thought I'd be into shooters. Have you tried them? I am going to ave to try out Metroid.
@polsci1503 I DID love DS a whole big lot
@Aberinkulas I did indeed know that it's one of your favorites. I picked it to play based on your indirect recommendation
@EarthThatWas I never tohught I'd say that
@johnsteed7 I'll try to find HL1. Once I find a franchise I like I typically want to play all of the games. I'm like that with a lot of things, even authors. Once I doscovered Kurt Vonnegut I read everything he wrote. Shooting with no puzzling is not always bad. Sometimes I don't want to think, just shoot
@Transilvanien I'm hloding onto Fallout to play this winter. It's one of those games that I know I'll be spending a lot of time with and I game a whole lot more in the winter when the weather gets icky.
@tprezzy12 - once you play CoD4 and enjoy it (and you will enjoy it) I wonder if you'll be tempted to try out the multiplayer. Once you travel down that path your gaming habits will change forever...
