I started playing Dead Space about a week ago. Holy Cow, it's some scary stuff!

First of all I have to say, that I am not a shooter-type person. I like games that don't require a whole bunch of button pushes or combinations. I like games that plod along a little more. C'mon, give me a break, I grew up playing Asteroids on my Atari. One button, one joystick. That's all. Anyways, I started playing Dead Space and surprisingly, I really, really like it. It's not first-person so it was probably a good introduction for me into this unknown realm. I'm used to things like Oblivion and Fable II being third person.

The visuals of the game are stunning. Everything is generally dark and appears to have a wash. The only things thatare brightare the health and statis meters on Isaac's (the main character's) suit. Even the color of the blood that flows PROFUSELY from dead enemies is a little muted. The music makes the game great (This is the one I was talking about in your blog, Ab.) There is nothing like hearing the enemies coming but not know where the heck they are. I spin around like an idot trying to find them.

The controls are easy to master - I really didn't have much trouble though I still panic sometimes and hit the trigger for my weapon instead of stasis. (Statis stops an enemy in it's tracks for a short time.) There is one enemy that is a big swollen blob. If you happen to shoot him in the body, he explodes into about a million little enemies that are tenacious. They are fun to stomp, but if outnumbered, they're trouble. Stasis works well - then you have to shoot the limbs of theblob to kill it. That's much easier to do if it's not shambling at you.

The storyline is engaging and is told through a series of conversations and audio, text or video logs that Isaac picks up along the way. I'm in Chapter 6 (of 12) and I can detect that somethingbad is going to happen (trying to be spoiler-free), but I don't know what it is yet.

I haven't been so absorbed in a game for a very long time. I haven't even really been on GS lately because I've been so into it. I tried to catch up tonight

Yay for me - I got the trophy for maintaining hull integrity at greater that 50% in the asteroids shooting portion of the game. I guess all of my time with my Atari paid off! Ok, actually, it took me 16 tries to get through it and I got really lucky!

I'm off to try to kill the Leviathan. He's a pain and I'm having trouble. Stupid bad guy

Ooh, that sounds pretty neat! I've never played anything like that before...I'm a very big RPG fan. I should branch out though.

Hmm... Asteroids. Sounds familiar.
My friend loved DS, and keeps suggesting I borrow it. But with my setup (a bubble-screened television with a tin-ish speaker in the middle of the living room where people constantly turn on lights) I'm a little worried that the experience will be soiled. Call me picky .

Dead Space is one of those games that I'm sure is really great, but it just completely passed me by. But it's a title I'm interested in checking out, because from what I've seen it looks really creepy and atmospheric and scary. Which, when you think about it, is a pretty rare commodity game-wise these days. Ever since Resident Evil abandoned horror for action, I've not really found an engaging action game with a legitimate horror theme. (That said, maybe I should check out Silent Hill one of these days. But...um, yeah, that's a little off-topic.) So, in short: thanks for the blog. Yet ANOTHER game I'll have to check out sometime soon.

@twilightlullaby It is neat-o! I'm huge into rpg's, too. I was chossing between Fallout and DS. I went with DS to try something new and I'm glad I did.

@korino55 Know a thing or two about asteroids, do ya? I hear ya on the experience. I like to play it with the lights off and the sound way up. I'm really, really lucky to be able to play that way.

That's another game in my backlog. I'm really looking forward to it. The Dead Space series seems like it will make a good replacement for the Resident Evil games, now that Resident Evil has given up trying to be scary.

@bluej33 I would truly call it horror. The creepy atmosphere and sound make the game. Sorry for adding to your list You guys do that to me all the time!

@bluej33: I'll be the first to say that Silent Hill: Homecoming bored me to tears, but that's off topic in Toni's blog. Yay for Deadspace! I'm glad you're branching out, like twilight needs to do. It's very atmospheric- we're lucky for the setup we have, definitely.

Love Dead Space! Enjoyed every minute of it, sloggy fetch quests excepted. Surround sound must make all the difference! I have pretty good speakers in my TV but I'd love to play it with a real 5.1 setup.

@johnsteed7 I haven't played any of the RE games though we have a bunch of them and I had heard that about the series. I'm already looking forward to the second and third installments and I heard about a movie. I dunno about that...

RE4 is a masterpiece. Go play it!
Posted Aug 5, 2009 6:40 pm PT
@mprezzy Thanks for the encouragment to branch out! Yeah, twilight...branch out!

@AlmightyMax Fetch quests have never bothered me a whole lot. Dunno why. Surround is awesome. I'm so spoiled (thanks for the setup, Matt!) I am loving it.

@johnsteed7 I'll have to pick that one up soon. Which platform? I have Wii and PS2...
Posted Aug 5, 2009 6:45 pm PT
The Wii version is the best version.

On a side note... anyone ever tell you your new user image looks..... sinister?
Posted Aug 5, 2009 6:52 pm PT
Gosh, you make that game sound fun. I had pretty much decided it didn't sound like my kind of thing. I'm usually not very interested in first-person shooters either but I love-loved Metroid Prime (I think that was more of a 'first-person adventure' though), so maybe I would enjoy it. Not that I have any current-gen systems to play it on or anything.

I wanted to like Dead Space and failed terribly... I'm like you in that I can like a shooter or actioner if it has a great story and is well done overall, but DS didn't float my boat. After being a big Bioshock fan (which surprised even me), I had hopes here, but found myself totally stressed out during some of the seemingly never-ending combat sections. But heck, to each their own. (I was more of a "Yar's Revenge" guy than Asteroids... )

I've been told Dead Space is like Resident Evil but in space. Is this accurate?

@bluej33: You want scary? Go find System Shock 2 on E-Bay. I still have nightmares.

Dead Space was my favorite game last year, I love creepy games like that especially in space. Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
Posted Aug 5, 2009 8:07 pm PT
I was really surprised at how good Dead Space was. I had heard from reviewers that it was something worth checking out, but I had no idea that it was so much fun. Really eager to see what they have planed for a sequel.

Nice, I've wanted to play Dead Space for some time now, I might just get it sometime. Sounds like a lot of fun and a good replacement for Resident Evil since that series has just given up

The only problem I have with horror games (Don't get me wrong, I love games that try and scare you) is that I tend to get pretty freaked out. So freaked out, that I usually don't move on very fast if I hear something spooky. I'm not sure if you've played Resident Evil 4 before, but there's this one part in the game where there is a slow-walking, (zombie slow), ice-like of a creature called a 'Regenerator'. Well, the game throws a few of these at you while you're on a far away island, and you're expected to fight you're way past every single one. -_-

That being said, I died quite a few times. But the thing with these regenerators, is that when you get into the same room as them, you start to hear heavy breathing. As you move closer and closer to where they are actually hiding, the breathing increases. And, when you finally think you know where it is and you're about to attack, you realize the damn thing is actually in the hallway behind you! That moment of terror burned the memory into my mind.

By the way, sorry for the long and boring blog post
Posted Aug 6, 2009 5:55 am PT
Dead Space is a good game. Does well on the creep you out factor. And garnered a favorable review from me here on Gamespot.
Posted Aug 6, 2009 6:52 am PT
Awesome, man. Your reactions to the game remind me of my own reactions to Half-Life 2. That game was more exhilarating than scary, but some of the fire fights were intense. I would often accidentally press the zoom-in button when I'd get nervous.

@johnsteed7 Umm, no, no one has sad sinister. I see sadness. *shrug*

@notjessica We have the thrid Metroid Prime and the only time I've played it was when I was trying to help one of the girls through a hard spot. Maybe I need to pick that one up.

@Swoosie It makes my heart race like crazy and I'm up against a boss that's making me crazy. I've been told that Bioshock is awesome, too. That could be next on my list. Ya know, I never played Yars Revenge.

@Aberinkulas Umm, I haven't played RE, so I don't know. Anyone out there care to answer?

@polsci1503 Thanks, I am enjoying it way more than I thought I ever would. @EarthThatWas I'm ready for the sequal, too, and I haven't even finished the first
Posted Aug 6, 2009 3:21 pm PT
@tennis12master No such thing as a boring post...harumph. Anyways, yeah, I get the same way. I walk around with my weapon ready and basically tiptoe around corners waiting for the sounds of feet coming after me. Blah!

@eajack I saw the reviews when I was looking for a walkthrough. Nice to see a good solid 9.

@GeekyDad Matt's been telling me for a while that I need to play Half-Life 2. I'll add that to my list! Now that I've added a shooter, my list got much longer.
Posted Aug 6, 2009 3:26 pm PT
@Aberinkulas: Dead Space and RE, um...kinda sorta, not really? I mean, they're both scary ('cept 5) and you shoot stuff. If that means they're the same then sure.

"I haven't been so absorbed in a game for a very long time. I haven't even really been on GS lately because I've been so into it."

I always think to myself, "Self! It's better to play these things than write about them!", even though it's fun to do both.

It's great when we find ourselves in a place where a precious, rare chunk of time and particularly engaging title meet and we get one of those "mini-vacation" experiences. Or at least that's how I think of them.

And welcome to the wonderful world of first-person (OK, over-the-shoulder, technically) shooters. Your merit badge is in the mail.
Posted Aug 6, 2009 3:48 pm PT
@eggmcmuff I agree! And the only reason I'm not playing it right now is because I'm stuck on Leviathan and I need a breather I can't WAIT to get my badge! Woohoo

@johnsteed7 Have you played Final Fantasy IX?
Posted Aug 6, 2009 4:27 pm PT
Nope. That's a rare FF that I missed.
Posted Aug 6, 2009 5:02 pm PT
@johnsteed7 Then you don't know Vivi? That's probably why I think he looks sad and you think sinister. Check out the game sometime and you'll see what I mean. His is a very sad story
Posted Aug 6, 2009 6:40 pm PT
since your talking about Dead Space, I can talk about it as well. The game was fun and the atmosphere was actually creepy and I can understand why people got so freaked out by it, finally the americans (no offense) could make some good horror However, the bosses, especially the final boss was surpisingly easy, the puzzles became the same as you moved further into the game and the story wasn't good, it was predictable and I hate how everything happens in windows, it's stupid. What I hated even more was the twist to the whole Issac's wife thingy, sorta a good twist, but you can't feel anything for Issac, because he never speaks! We dunno what kind of person he is, so it's impossible for me to care about him

Enjoy though I have all the trophies in it BTW
Posted Aug 7, 2009 7:42 am PT
@subterranean500 ALL of the trophies? Wow, good job!
