1. GENO!!!!

(series: Mario)

(premiere: Super Mario RPG, SNES, 1996)

(Square Enix)

Why he's overrated:

Geno is BY FAR the most highly supported 3rd Party character for SSB4 and, before Brawl was released, the most highly supported 3rd party candidate for that, too. Hey, Geno fans, I've got 1 question for you? What... the... fudge?!?! I mean, seriously! GENO?!?!? He was in 1 game back in 1996, produced by a less Nintendo-affiliated 3rd party company, for a series that already has too many reps.... GOD! It's just madness!

Seriously, before Brawl was announced, I hadn't ever even heard of Geno. If there are going to be 3rd party characters in a Smash Bros. game, they have to be well known or contemporary (from a game released in the past 10 years) or both. Megaman is well known, Bomberman is well known, Rayman is well known, GENO IS NOT WELL KNOWN!

And, if we're talkin' more Mario character then why is Geno the first character that comes to mind? Toad's been a playable character since Super Mario Bros. 2, Paper Mario has had 3 games entirely focused on him. Why don't they get as much love? Hell, even a character from THE SAME GAME as Geno, Mallow, is more funkadellically funky fresh!

Now, I know that Geno's lasers and stretchy arms give him a lot of potential for a good moveset but... it's not like Paper Mario, Toad, Megaman, Bomberman, and Rayman are lacking in moves either. And, besides, we already have a retro laser guy and his name is R.O.B!

2.RIDLEY!!!

The image

(series: Metroid)

(premiere: Metroid, NES, 1986)

(Nintendo)

Why he's overrated:

Okay, so Ridley's a villain, okay? And Ridley is a reptile, okay? And Ridley can fly, okay? That makes him a great character, right? WRONG!

Last time I checked, we Smash Bros. already had 2 reptilian characters: Charizard who can fly and Bowser who's a villain. Also, wheever you think of a potential moveset for Ridley, what do you think of? BREATHING FIRE! Bowser and Charizard have that in common, too and, more likely than not, it'll be the neutral B move again. So, what's Kirby gonna think about having THREE Fire breathing related copy powers?!? If I were him I'd want Sakurai to get his butt in gear and give me some variety!

Now, I know that the Metroid series is in need of a 2nd character but what fans fail to realize is that Metroid HAS a second character, Zero Suit Samus! I mean, sure she's a transformation and all, but all of her moves are totally original.

Now, some may argue that Zero Suit Samus is just a Samus without her suit so, she doesn't count as a seperate rep. Well, if you think that Metroid's worthy of a 2nd character, it's not like Ridley is your only option. Dark Samus and the Metroid Prime Hunters are both fairly major characters and, in my eyes, would be WAAAAAAAAY cooler than Ridley, if one of them got in.

The final thing that I'd like to address is that, though I don't support Ridley AT ALL, it's not because he's 'too big'. People that hate Ridley because he's big fail to see Sakurai's amazing ability to make characters just the right size to fight. Olimar, Kirby, Meta Knight, and Bowser have all been re-sized, so... yeah!

3. Chrono

http://www008.upp.so-net.ne.jp/ryugoo/hongallery/chrono.gif

(series: Chrono Trigger)

(premiere: Chrono Trigger, SNES, 1995)

(Square Soft)

Why he's overrated:

Chrono is overrated for much the same reason that Geno is, he's 3rd party and hasn't been heard from in the last decade. The other reason why he's overrated is because of his sword. I think that Ike, Marth, Link, Meta Knight, and Toon Link have the 'sword fighter' categorie pretty well covered. I hear that he has magic, too but Zelda has magic and, if we wanted another magic character, Ashley or Kamek would make more much sense because they'd be so easy to get the licensing to. Though, Chrono Trigger might have been a good game, unless Chrono Trigger get revived or Nintendo buys the rights to the game, Chrono's chances in Smash bros. are like a snowball's chance in hell.

4. ISAAC!!!!

http://gameworldbr.com/images/06g.jpeg

(series: Golden Sun)

(premiere: Golden Sun, GBA, 2001)

(Nintendo)

Why he's overrated:

Well, there's not much to say about Isaac that hasn't already been said for Chrono but I can say that, though there are many games in the Golden Sun series, there are much more deserving 'new' Nintendo series reps. out there. Like I said for Chrono, SSB4 doesn't need many more 'sword fighters' and the Golden Sun series is full of them. Animal Crossing, Drill Doser, Stafy, and Tomato Adventures don't have ANY sword fighters, making their possible reps. far more worthy than ANYTHING that the Golden Sun series could ever add to the Smash bros. universe... EVER!

5. BOWSER JR!!!

http://www.n-philes.com/m/features/endboss/smsbowserjr.jpg

(Series: Mario)

(Premiere: Super Mario Sunshine, GCN, 2002)

(Nintendo)

Why he's overrated:

Oh, good old Bowser Jr! I've been looking forward to ranting about him. Sure, he's a lightweight villain with the ability to transform but... think about what he transforms into! He's half mini-Bowser, half Mario clone and, quite frankly, he's NOT the most worthy new representative for the Mario series. Sure, he's appeared in A LOT of Mario spin-offs but so has Toad and he's been part of Mario's universe for WAAAAAAAAAAAAY longer than 'BJ'!

I agree with you on some of those but disagree on others. I had no idea who the heck Geno was until I read this blog, WHY does anyone want him in SSB? I'm not familiar with Chrono but if we're adding another sword man, Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia had better be firs tin line. And Isaac is already an assist trophy, there are better characters than him. But Ridley would be fun, they could have a really cool moveset if they took a stab at it and he'd be fun to play as if they were to do it right. And Bowser Jr. would actually be really good and also different from Bowser and Mario, Nintendo could definitely think of some good stuff for the little guy. Look at the thing in his hand? That could be put to good, intuitive use. Just my thoughts, nice post there.

I disagree on BJ and Isaac.

Isaac? I never even heard og the guy before Brawl
Posted Jun 27, 2008 6:39 am PT
The irony here is that Ridley is one of the most deserving characters in Brawl.More so than any other character.
Posted Jun 27, 2008 7:25 am PT
WTF, VG? Ridley more deserving than Megaman, Bomberman, Tom Nook, Toad, Paper Mario, Krystal, and King K. Rool? I don't think so!

^ Yeah, he's more deserving than all of them. #1, no doubt. But we've argued extensively at the Kirby something-or-other union, so I won't go on about it.

Geno... I half agree. I do love him, and he would be great, but only if he's not 3rd Party. Square has MUCH cooler characters they could add, including, dare I say it, Cloud Strife.

Crono, yeah, overrated, much cooler Square characters, same as Geno.

Isaac... if he gets a third game between now and SSB4, yes, include him, definitely. If not, he'll end up as a forgotten relic of a bygone era, namely, the GBA.

Bowser Jr. does not have to be a Bowser clone. Maybe he'll use the paintbrush as a sword and be fast, with the occational spin move or fire blast. Admittantly, he's not my first choice for a Mario rep, but he's up there.

I only agree with Bowser Jr. He is overrated!

I agree with everybody except Ridley and Isaac. Ridley is 100% deserving of a slot, and yes, more than Bomberman, Tom Nook, Toad, Paper Mario and Krystal IMO. I personally think that hunters was a bad game, and dark samus would be dumb because SOO many games have "dark" versions of the main characters, it's such a cliche! I also must stress that when I think of Ridley, I DON'T think particularly of breathing fire. Sure, he DOES do that, but it's not exactly his only attack. Also, yes, we have 2 other lizards and they both breathe fire. Well, we have more than 2 humans in the game, right? Are all 3 lizards WORTHY? Yes. So why bar him just because he's a reptile? Also, he seems to me to breathe fire in a style that would not be expressed in a simple B hold.
Also, Isaac is somewhat deserving of a slot but there are many in line before him, I think.
Fear my super long comment.

i don't care about the others i just want geno in SSB4
Posted Aug 4, 2008 12:27 pm PT
the g on the pic to me stands for geno
Posted Aug 4, 2008 12:32 pm PT
Lol. Well, if Nintnedo/Square Enix decide to make a new game with him in it, I MIGHT reconsider.

First off, Nintendo has used the Smash series to advertise - Ness in SSB. So if they plan to start making new games, then I can understand an exception however we have to assume that's not the case. Geno is like Midna. Both awesome characters, but they have only been in one game and it would take a lot more popularizing over several games - no matter how awesome their move set could be -. Ridley is the most eligible of these. Your reasoning on him is based solely on the idea he's reptilian, he flies, and that he might have a b flame attack. Well, if you've played a Metroid game, you'd know Ridley shoots fire balls not a flame stream. He also has a wide move pool and comes way before other hunters.

Chrono - who?
Issac- needs more games BJ(get over his acronym) - He's very much eligible for the amount of games he's been in and I can't imagine him being anything similar to Mario and/or Bowser. The way Paint Mario moves, is extremely different from Mario's and Bowser Jr. is notably lighter and couldn't pull off 3/4 of Bowser's moves. And what could the Toads do? I'd have some trouble imagining a move set for them.

Ehh not to sound retarded but i think geno was in mario and luigi super star saga. But it could be cool to have him in as a maybe but i would much much much prefer megaman , he kicks butt!

Your arguments would be better if you weren't such a toad fanboy. I mean it's kind of hypocritical to say that someone like Geno or Chrono is overrated when you're hyping the biggest loser in the video game universe. Seriously, what would his moveset be? Smash right and Toad get's captured by Bowser. Smash up and Toad lets Bowser capture the princess. And his final smash is standing around letting Mario solve all his problems. At least most of the characters you're bashing fit a fighting game scenario.

Although, I could see Toad taking the place of the sandbag in the next game...that would work.
Posted Jul 13, 2009 4:34 am PT
People want Geno in brawl because of all the characters listed above (whether supposedly overrated or not) Geno is the most kick ass. I can understand that some people would say Chrono or Isaac over him, so nothing against that. But seriously, anyone who would rather see Toad in Smash Bros (aside from his roll as Peach's meat shield, let alone as a playable character before anyone listed above) simply doesn't have a soul in my opinion.

And how you compared Geno to ROB, well as far as Megaman goes, we already have a bionic space person with a gun arm. Paper Mario-Mr. Game and Watch. What the hell would Tom Nook do, sell real estate? There's already three identical Starfox characters, so why add Krystal. How different would they make her? K-Rool would be cool, though. It'd be nice to see more DK characters. Point is, the only thing that is overrated is talking about things that are overrated. Later.
