Just as I was really getting into Arkham Asylum, my PlayStation 3 decided to die on me. Again. It's the same problem as last time--the machine won't read discs. No matter how many games or movies I stick in there, nothing registers. Let's take a look at the numbers, shall we?

PLAYSTATION 3

Length of Ownership: 1 year 9 months
Number of Catastrophic Failures: 2

XBOX 360

Length of Ownership: 3 years 3 months
Number of Catastrophic Failures: 0

Yes, my PS3 has died twice and my Xbox 360--the same hardware that's supposed to red ring if you so much as look at it funny--is still alive and kicking three years later. I really, really must be doing something wrong. Really.

Maybe Sony just hates you .. or maybe you unintentionally offended Kaz Hirai somehow .. and this is his wrath ! .. OR maybe it's McShea !!!!

anyways this really sucks .. hope you discover why this is happening so it doesn't happen again ..

My 360 rrod'ed on my in under 100 hours of game play but over 50, thanks to achievements. I had gotten the 50 hour one, but it died before I could get the 100 hour one. And I was only playing that one game since that's what I got it for.

My ps3 recently died as well but not a typicial ps3 failure. Though it took over two years for it to die. The internal power supply died so the machine wouldn't turn on anymore. Got it replaced and it works fine.

Got the 360 fixed under the warranty but I just don't play it as much. Mostly because I can't keep both systems hooked up at the same time due to space. I just have no place to keep the 360. Sucks. I would probably play it more then.

Haha - my 360 has only Red Ringed once in four years of ownership. Plus, it was a launch console.

Hmm, maybe you have a real defective PS3. Have you contacted Sony about this, Shaun?
Posted Sep 3, 2009 9:44 am PT
That, or you have the worst luck in the world when it comes to Sony platforms.

Either way, it's really strange that this has happened twice now, and with the same cause, too! It's like the infamous PlayStation 2 disc read error all over again...

I remember when I purchased my PS3 the sales person told me that some issues some previous owners had was that the blu-ray drive would die due to it overheating. (the underside) Is it in a well ventilated area and do you clean the vents? As for your luck with your 360, I can't explain that. You're one of the lucky ones!

There's a simple explantion-You're not of the 23% RROD Users and one of the 10% PS3 Failure Users. You haven't done anything wrong so don't fret, hope it gets fixed.

I'm out three 360, the Wii has been fine for about one year and three months and the PS3 I have had just over a year.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 10:36 am PT
You're backwards!
Posted Sep 3, 2009 10:44 am PT
That's crazy, Shaun, but hey, at least you can use the office one, right?
Posted Sep 3, 2009 11:08 am PT
That got to suck, but it still turn on right? Look on the bright side. At least you can back up your hard drive before you send it off.

You must be the unluckiest person I know. 2 bricked PS3s and no problems with the 360 in 3 years. That's a statistical anomaly my friend!
Posted Sep 3, 2009 11:10 am PT
Maybe you've been cursed, a curse which causes your PS3 to crap out on you when you play an extremely good game.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 11:18 am PT
This is what I call ironi
Posted Sep 3, 2009 11:34 am PT
Those are the kind of stats I like to hear! My one friend at work goes on frequently about how Sony would never let him down, and how Microsoft screwed him badly with his xbox, and that it's just a matter of time before i feel the same way.

Reverse-RROD???

Posted Sep 3, 2009 1:39 pm PT
Maybe you need to check the literacy rate of the country that's assembling your PS3s.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 2:08 pm PT
Wow, that's actually surprising that your Xbox has outlasted two of your PS3's. Hopefully you'll be able to get a new one.

I've also got a question, you said you were playing Batman: AA and you have all the consoles. Batman is on both the Xbox and PlayStation so how do you decide which console to play it on and why did you pick your PS3 for Batman? That's just kind of something I have always wondered.

that's funny, before I read this my Xbox elite just got a E74 error so it now has to be sent away. That's my 3 time I had to send a xbox away.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 2:20 pm PT
RROD is contagious! Maybe you could try getting a new one with the price drop. Donate yours to the Gamespot offices or something.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 3:02 pm PT
The good news is that this gives me an excuse to pick up a PS3 slim without feeling like a total jerk!
Posted Sep 3, 2009 3:53 pm PT
My brothers PS3 has also failed twice, to my 360's once. I guess it's the luck of the draw.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 4:25 pm PT
I know my PS3 crashed on me too before by 2 year Xbox360, which still hasn't had any problem. Doesn't mean I don't fear the RING.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 4:32 pm PT
I'd say you're doing something seriously right, actually. I mean, your 360 should have died, by now. Kudos to you.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:03 pm PT
OMG, that is totally strange, I just read recently that the PS3 failure rate is 10%, it is true it is much less than the xbox but I still find it pretty high, and seems you are one of those 10%. I hope you get to fix it for free this time. Good luck
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:21 pm PT
That sucks.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:27 pm PT
Yeah, that's a little odd. Does it have a warranty at least?
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:28 pm PT
That's pretty funny. Now i'm scared to get a PS3.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:31 pm PT
@shaunmc -- Well, at least something good came out of it. Hopefully that one won't suffer the same fate your current one.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:34 pm PT
You've got some rotten luck. At least as far as the PS3 is concerned.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 5:35 pm PT
You should give Microsoft a ring and demand they send you 5 Red Ringed Xbox 360 consoles to make up for this imbalance
Posted Sep 3, 2009 7:43 pm PT
I would say the same as Gabu mentioned.....I've had my PS3, 20GB model for 2 years and 4 months with no problems at all.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 8:40 pm PT
wow. you have your x360 for 3 years. it must have been one of the first SKU of x360 hardware and no rrod. good job.
Posted Sep 5, 2009 12:39 am PT
Can I have your 360?
Posted Sep 5, 2009 1:17 am PT
