This morning, I got my very first opportunity to use a Wii classic controller after Tom McShea brought one into the office after picking it up over the weekend. It's a compact little device that manages to capture the form factor of the SNES controller while still sporting the two analog sticks found on the GameCube pad. Of course, those sticks come at a price: they're basically shoehorned into the design and, as a result, situated remarkably close together.

For most people, that's not an issue. But for me, it's something that amplifies one of my strangest pet peeves in video games: it creeps me the hell out when my thumbs touch. That's why I tend to play first-person shooters on the Xbox 360 rather than the PlayStation 3 when they're available on both systems--the sticks are much farther apart on a 360 pad and the threat of my thumbs accidentally bumping into one another just isn't there. It's weird, I know, but it's just a strange little thing I have about games.

So that got me thinking. Do you guys have any weird little pet peeves or eccentricities that don't make any sense at all? Little things that bother you but wouldn't faze most people? Maybe you absolutely can't stand to have the 360 situated vertically, or always have to use one of two PS3 controllers you own even though they're completely identical? Let me hear it!

On the 360, there are little cracks on both sides of the controller, and dirt gets in there. I pick the dirt out of there all the time. Also, dust gets on the balls of the analog sticks, and it just looks bad. Dumb, I know.

Same here with the dirt in the sides of the 360 controller =)

I personally like the PS3 controller much better i mean i love the analog stick placement its just perfect for me and my thumbs hardly ever touch and even if they do i dont notice since im usually focused on the game the reason why i dont like the 360 controller cause i feel its quite uncomfortable after playing for awhile and i dont like the analog placement how one is higher then the other

When my hands get really sweaty when fighting a tough boss.
Or when theirs glare on the screen.

I hate the PS3 sticks, not because my thumbs touch, just because it is a poor design. @GearHead3000 It's the same thing with me. I had all that crap that gets in the cracks or the dust on the sticks. What's weird is that I could care less how much dust my TV screen has on it but I can't stand it on the controller.

Let's look at a few of my many problems:

I hate glare. To me glare is a four letter word and seeing it usually leads to those very same words.

I hate it when my hands get sweaty from holding the controller too long or too tightly. This happened only a few times but it stresses me out an unreasonable amount.

I go into a frothing rage if people are talking while I'm playing a story heavy game. It took me months to beat the first Condemned, a reasonbly short game, because people were talking while I was playing. And even though they weren't talking loud enough to disturb me it was still annoying the crap outta me.

Those are the three that spring to mind fastest.

I can understand the thumbs touching thing, that would just be plain weird to have it happen. For me, nothing really bothers me too much, but I always have to have my Wii games very organized. It bothers me if the boxes and stuff are all messed up.

WHAT.

?

Thats one of the strangest things I've ever heard. Is it just during gaming, or you dont like thumb touching in any venue?

I'm easily startled in games, so sudden deaths, especially with anticipation, like avoiding falling blocks or something like that, are something that I can't stand. No one else seems to have this issue . I prefer my TV's volume at an even number for games (), and while this one actually makes sense, I can't stand letting someone else try a DS game and watching jab at my poor little touch screen with the stylus (since I'd never let anyone use their fingers).

Geez, I'm weird.

I can not play games in my underwear. I don't know if its because I think the charactersin the game can see me, or if its because I need to make playing a game an event but nope gotta put on shorts and a shirt.

I have to wash my hands every time I pick up a controller. Can't have the oils interfering with my playing. Also, I don't think I've ever noticed my thumbs touching on a PS controller, and I play COD all the time..

Oh yeah, I also have my TV volume relatively low, and I ALWAYS place my game discs back into their cases when I take them out of my console. Take it out of console, put it in case and close securely, take another game and put it in console, etc. That HAS to be done lol.

I always use the same controller. I have one 360 controller that I always use, 1 Wii Remote that I always use and 1 Dual Shock 3 that I always use.

I actually had to replace my first 360 controller recently because it had gotten so much use that the rubber on the thumbsticks had worn off!

Oh dear Shaun, you shouldn't have mentioned the difference between a 360 and PS3 controller and expect not to have a system war in this blog.

I think exactly the same about my PS3 controllers if I have two, I always use one but they're identical so I end up using both anyway. Although one has a **** analogue. So I guess I am always using the same one.

Now onto opinions on the controllers. I am a PS3 Fanboy. The 360 controller has a much better and widespread design but it doesn't feel right. Mainly because I love shooters and using the very back triggers to fire is awful. The trigger dig into my fingers and make them bleed. The PS3 controller is light and snazzy but everything's to close together. I think if I continue playing my PS3 I'll develop alfrightis.

I need all of my game controllers (and, before this generation of video game hardware) memory cards for a single system to be different colors. I used to justify this by claiming that it was easier to tell multiple, otherwise identical items apart by doing this, but that was only partially true. I just like colors, especially when they're colors no one else has.

Everyone has their preference

When a PS3 is put vertical it bothers me way more than necessary, i am really paranoid about it falling over mid game. I also only use one of my two identical controllers, the one with the crack (dropped it down the stairs while moving) in it is good luck. as well as all my games must be organized by console and alphabetically.
Posted Aug 12, 2009 3:25 pm PT
Yeah same with GlokWork. Gotta alphabetize my games and divide them up by console. Also, I have to fill up an entire rack with games of one console or multiple but as long as there are no DVDs. Another problem is that I still have PS1 games (Final Fantasies) and some of their original jewel cases were broken and I HATE having discs laying around, so I ordered 10 4-disc DVD cases from Amazon and Photoshopped FF VIII & IX's boxart to fit it. Guess you can say I'm weird.

I cant stand having a stick controller. Like if I eat and go straight to gaming it will make my controller sticky and drive me mad.
Posted Aug 13, 2009 6:11 am PT
@Beastcake @Glokwerk

I totally forgot about my alphabetizing habit. I also have to organize my game rack by system first and alphabetically second. The only exception is the Mass Effect platinum hits game, which sits below the rest of the Xbox 360 games because I didn't want the black case sticking out from the green ones.

When ever I play games I keep a rag next to me so I can wipe of the imaginary sweat from my hands off the controller. My friend tells me there is no sweat, but I always say my hands don't feel right. I also don't like how my PS3 controller has huge horizontal lines on the stick part of the joysticks cause I guess they rub with the housing too hard. I also sometimes notice that I hold the controller so hard that my fingers get cold probably from low circulation and I can hear the plastic cracking. I should get a new controller! I remember seeing a PS2 controller with built in fans but I haven't been able to find the PS3 version : (

I don't like the triggers on the PS3 controller... or the analog sticks, for that matter.
Posted Aug 14, 2009 10:01 am PT
I alphabatize my games, wont let ne1 use their fingers on my DS screen, and demend Wii wrist straps be used.

I can't tolerate bad gamer names. Any regular or creative name is alright by me, but names with bad slang, names that try to sound too cool or illegible names just drive me nuts. Can't do it.
