What the heck happened to our show guides? I can't find anything. The front page is a mess. Navigation is counter intuitive. Where are the notes? Where are the allusions? Why is an episode page not complete with all of our pieces? Where is our list view of episodes? Too much clicking is required to navigate, which is bad for my carpal tunnel. If the company is trying to increase advertising, it won't work, because no one will find this mess appealing or useful enough to put up with this navigation nightmare. It looks horrible and is confusing. I predict a major exodus to competing websites.

I think I know what you are talking about. When you go to any show and the stuff is listed on top right?

What I can't figure out is why they went ahead and used this new guide page when everyone told them during the beta testing that it stunk. Why are the user reviews on the episode front pages while the cast has to be hunted for?

It's horrible. The site has gone from a database to a datamine. I've never had to dig so much to find the information I'm looking for. And keep in mind that I KNOW what is supposed to be available on the episode pages (trivia, quotes, etc.). What do you think a casual passerby is going to do? Pass right on by.

Exactly what I commented to Jaxie. Hardly anyone is here to use all these newly-needed clicks.

welcome to new tv.com..................

Be sure to tell staff about this. It doesn't seem like they listen to us loudmouths who've predicted this fiasco from the beginning.

Tell me about it, I also like the old way as well. Now, I brace myself to a heck of ride on my show guide, since the 5th season of Deadliest Catch is premiering tomorrow.

DB--Check out the episode view. There's nothing on the page except a summary.

HawaiiChick-You make a really good point. I don't get it. What was the purpose of the Beta test?

Hoeech: If they want us to mine the site, then they ought to give us some pickaxes.

Jekyll: I think they've stabbed themselves in the foot with all these clicks, less users, less money for the site.

Josh: I don't feel too welcome .

Angus--I haven't gotten around to telling staff. I've been really busy this week.Who do you suggest?

Minarvia: It's so frustrating, I feel like retiring, but I'll see if I can wait it out. Maybe the developers will get some common sense and we'll go back to one of the previous designs.

you could try Jaxie, I guess.

Unfortunately, I think they are phasing out the database. I posted about this on the Redesign Feedback forum back in the fall when they first started hiding information behind menus and submenus. This is being done intentionally, in my view. They want people to get used to seeing the episode guides with no information, which they apparently think looks too messy or something. Then once people get used to overlooking the info because it's so difficult to access, they will eventually dump the entire trivia/note/quote/allusion database.

It's clear that the new goal for TV.com that Jaxie was talking about is an online video/Twitter-clone site with no "messy" trivia or cast lists getting in the way. It's clear that the new CBS Interactive management is driving these design decisions and the long-term, holdover TV.com staff has very little say in the matter. It's frustrating and dispiriting, but at least it's better to prepare ourselves for the inevitable. I do hope I'm wrong but it's now been over 7 months since we started seeing this big mess and it just keeps getting worse. The staff informed us via blog posts that the rate of change will only increase in the very near future.

They want more hits on the site. How to do this? Bury information. Very sad. Submitting takes way longer now.
Posted Apr 14, 2009 11:04 am PT
123home123, that's what I am worry about, because I take pride in my quotes, because sometimes they take repeating views of the episodes.
Posted Apr 14, 2009 12:20 pm PT
I wish they would just say that. If they don't want the detailed information added anymore, we can take over free services to a site that cares about that. But they can't even adapt the infectious style of Twitter and sticky a "what are you watching?" running blog for everyone.

123--I hope you are wrong about that! The video features are inferior to sites like Hulu. I watch videos on Hulu instead of here because the videos are larger, there are more features and the videos are organized with dates and episode lists. What this site has that is unique is the database.

ShadowRanger--I agree. I think that's what they are doing, but no one, including me, will bother. It makes more sense to have the old system. Busy shows always have more than one page of notes, trivia, etc. I was always clicking to see more quotes and notes, which accomplishes more traffic. The front page is the pull--without the pull, no one will click on the episodes, or the details. It's too much work. Web design 101--don't frustrate potential visitors.

The site is very sad looking nowadays...I miss the old way. How are you anyways -- keeping busy? I'm liking LA, but finding a new place to live is hard -- everything is so expensive!

The site is very sad looking! What part of LA is near your job? I'm sure all the cheap places I used to live are expensive now. Best of luck.

I live in Sherman Oaks...but my job is in Century City -- so super-expensive area lol. Not so good for me.
Posted Apr 15, 2009 9:41 pm PT
Eddie: Century City is not too far from Santa Monica. That used to be somewhat cheap, when I lived in LA, but may not be cheap any more. Also West Hollywood was another neighborhood that was cheap, way back when. If I moved to LA, though, I'd be tempted to live in Santa Monica, which is closer to the beach.
