There is an old gentleman who lives in my area and owns three little dogs. He can't walk well, but has a little scooter that he drives around on, with his three little dogs running along behind him. Normally I think it's quite cute, but not after today.Today, as I was driving to the supermarket, one of those little dogs decided that the road was the best place to be and ran out into the middle of my side of the road. I had to slam on my brakes and swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid running it over, as it stood staring at it's owner. The poor man was yelling and frantically trying to get off the scooter to get to the little brat.It took quite some time afterward for my heart to slow down again and my hands to stop shaking. This is why my dog is never allowed off her lead.

Glad it all worked out! That was dangerous for you and the dog!

Sesho - You don't have to tell me twice!
If there had been another car coming I would have probably hit the dog because I couldn't have swerved the other way.

I have run over a dog, but it was at night and the dog was black, so not really my fault.

Jekyll - No it wasn't. It was the owners for not keeping a better eye on their dog.

Oh dear

LMH68 - The poor loff. Both the man and the dog. We lost one dog to a car accident. I won't let it happen again. I would love to let Leah off the lead to run around, but I just can't face the risk of losing her to a car.

Ah Sassy hope you're alright, I would be pretty shook up as well.

We had a dog run out of nowhere and chase our car. He bumped into the tire (we were driving slowly) and ran back to his hiding place. He wasn't hurt and we had a big laugh.

Glad you were able to avoid it. There have been a few times my dog got out the front door, and he goes straight for the street. Thankfully no cars were around at the time. Now that he's older he doesn't take off like that.

I've never come close to hitting someone's pet but the other week a herd (not sure what the term is for more than one) of geese/ducks just walked out into the middle of the road in front of me. Luckily I was able to stop in time and let them go back off the road but it did scare me. This was on a pretty major road as well!!

dambambridge - That would be a flock it would. I remember my former boss being in tears once when she found one of her ducks on the road. It was run over by a truck. Completely and utterly squished it was.
I'm glad that you were not hurt when you stopped.

No, you didn't make up gaggle - that's right
I feel for you, Sassy - I have had a dog hit me, actually. I wasn't going very fast, as it was a residential street, and the puppy came flying out the door as her owner opened it. She ran right into my back bumper, just behind the rear tire, and broke her nose. I screeched to a stop just down the road, and went back to see if she was okay. I ended up driving the owner and puppy to the vet to see that she was taken care of. She was fine after her visit, thank goodness. I was just happy she hit behind the tire, not in front of, or she may have gone under it.

Totally true dogs need to be on leads - Becky always is. Glad you're ok too. I nearly hit a cat once, I braked suddenly going round a roundabout to miss it luckily the guy behind had seen the cat so didn't go in the back of me.

I'm glad that you missed it, though you're right, dogs shouldn't be allowed to run free in the road. Imagine if you had crashed into a car on the opposite side? At least everything turned out well.

Man that terrible and I know you love animals but I gotta say if it's you or the dog. Next time the dog should be the one in peril.

I become beyond vexed when I see dogs being "walked" on leashes with someone on a bicycle at the other end. Your dreadful situation fits in the same category. First of all, it is so very dangerous for the animal, second of all-- well, you're the second of all: this motorized guy with his ya-cahn't-take-ahwee-me-freedom dogs were just an accident waiting to happen. Thank God no one was hurt. This time. Unfortunately, guys like these think they are "entitled" and exempt from the unwritten rules that protect all living creatures, great and small. So, there'll probably be a next time. Be safe, my friend-- Rear-end the guy's mobile contraption, defuncting it, not him, for a security measure! LOL!

It doesn't matter that the old man has a handicap, what he is doing puts his pets in a dangerous situation and that's just wrong.
