Ok clearly this is not the best movie title ever. In fact it sucks. But it sucks very well. But maybe this is a good thing. I was at work today, a little bored and overheard 2 customers talking about the movie title and it occured to me that without any real knowledge about this movie everyone is talking about it.
Radio shows are talkin about it, people are makin fun of it, and according to the old marketing addage there is no such thing as bad publicity (well unless its really bad like to do with nasty rape or something like that but its not so we can leave that alone). Clearly without Samuel in it it wouldn't have had a chance, then it would have just been a terrible movie title that no one would have ever heard about, but the big name actor puts it in the public sphere and the terrible name gets people talkin about it. What other current movie is getting this much publicity, in the absense of a cult classic such as LOTR, star wars etc, which if snakes on a plane had been released at a similar time as would have led to it flopping cause everyone would be talking about said cult classic, its created a stir, and stirs lead to bums on seats -> ticket sales etc.
Personally i havent decided whether to go see it yet, i mean you have to with a name that bad dont you, or to wait for it to come out on dvd and then be selling for ultra cheap at which stage i will buy it and watch it on my mates widescreen hd tv, which does seem to be the more sensible option. Although this leaves another question... can my dvd collection take having a movie called snakes on a plane in it, at least if i see it at the cinema there is no lasting proof of it...
I finally decided to post something in my blog and have decided to make it somewhat of a rant. It will probably end up being a runniong topic as i think more about it. So here it goes... rant in progress.
In Australia we have a song by Mc Lars entitled 'download this song'. Hopefully this particular song and 'artist' does not leave our shores and proceeds to disappear very quickly. Unfortunately i dont think thats gonna happen, i think he is a product of current music trends and we are gonna see more rather then less of this sort of thing.
The main premise of his song is that music should be freely availible and that music producers and money etc shouldn't be needed to launch music careers, that all you should need is your laptop and you should be able to perform sell out shows. While this sounds like a good idea the song itself is all the proof that is needed of why it is not. Basically its just a couple catchy bars mixed with some fast rhyming, which while it may be passable to listen to is really completely unoriginal and exceedingly ordinary, its just not good music.
Now i'm all for people gettin their music out there, i would prefer it if there were more bands playin there music at pubs and other venues. But there should be the oportunity for great music and great musicians to get rewarded for their work. There should also be an availibility for them to be heard in a seperate arena to every garage band out there. If artists lose lucrative record deals and are on the same download page as 100 other bands and their tracks, then the music isn't gonna get out there and it may just disappear. And we cant say that isn't happening now. When was the last time that a new artist came out that was making some really great music and got a lot of air play in the comercial arena. I may have missed some music but all the music i've head comercially lately has either been ordinary at best or by major artists that have already made there moneyand have proven ability.
I think i'll leave it there for now... rant to be continued.
