Howdy All
Sorry I haven't been speaking so much and there has been so long between blog entries. For the past for weeks I've been a bit of a forum lurker. Part of the reason for this has been the fact most of my favourite tv shows are ended in America but still haven't played in Australia. I of course refuse to wait til Australia has seen it, if I did that I wouldn't have even seen the final to Heroes! But because of this I always get to topics a little late and as such most the observations I consider insightful have been already said, probably because of the genre has a habit of obsessing fans but still. Anyway the other reason is I've been extremely strapped for time atm. I even had to cancel my World of Warcraft Subscription
Anyway on a happier note my birthday is coming up and I'm getting the Firefly Season, and the Ekka is here. For those who don't know the Ekka is a massive show in Brisbane where we pretty much feed the economy by wasting money on train fare, tickets, food, showbags and rides. But hey, its tradition and its fun. Anyway this is TV com so Ill start with my recent TV/Movie experiences.
Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog:
I heard about and sadly thought I had missed out since its August and in Australia we can't get it on Itunes. Luckily there is a website on which I was able to watch it about 50 times.
http://drhorrible.com/mushortio.html
Anyway I loved it, though the ending was quite a surprise to me. Its a musical about a sweet villain who trying to get into the big leagues and be able to finally talk to the girl of his dreams. It was written by Joss Whedon during the writers strike, if only every other writer did something like this during the writers strike we wouldn't of had so much painful time searching youtube for something resembling an episode of our favourite tv show. Any way thats it for the non spoiler part...
Spoilers
Remember when i said it was written by Joss Whedon. Famous for having comedy right beside tragedy in all his pieces. Famous for killing of much loved characters, and having bittersweet endings. So I went into this thinking its a comedy, of course it will have a happy ending.
naive as poor Penny. The ending to me felt a bit out of place on first viewing since I was looking at it as a comedy. But later on I realised its not so much a comedy as a villain origin story. And villains girls have high mortality rates. Without even realising Dr Horrible chose to be the villian in the first act and from there it just got worse and worse. The romance between his worst enemy and the girl of his dreams, the failure to pull of the heist, having a car thrown at his head
, and then finally that last push over the edge by Captain Hammer all led to the final consequence in which he became the villain he always wanted to be, but at the cost of his one true love. So sure it was a comedy but I think in the end it became more of a tragedy. He went from a villain who didn't want to fight in a park where children were to a man pretends he no longer feels a thing. And the saddest part is that his love, who was killed through Captain Hammer's recklessness died with his name on her lips, pretty much a slap in the face of poor Billy. My favourite song in this is a Brand New Day, which is really the turning point I think to the darker tone of the third act.
End Spoiler
Anyway sorry I rambled on a bit there, the point was that its really good and you should definately see it, those of you who haven't.
Doctor Who
I haven't said much about Doctor Who lately so I just have to say that Donna was my favourite companion of the new series. No more crushes, no more love stories, just two friends cruising around in the TARDIS. Oh wait did I say no love stories, scrap that, Rose came back
I won't say anymore of Doctor Who until its finished airing in Australia except that I am an anti-shipper when it comes to Doctor Who and as such really really hope that they never put us through a Rose or Martha relationship with the doctor again. Sorry to all those who like them, but its Doctor Who not Neighbours.
Ok that was harsh nothing is as bad as the Rachel/Angus relationship atm. Sorry for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about
Other TV News
Yeah couldn't be bothered doing all these different heading seeing as I have hardly anymore to report.
Supernatural will be starting soon in America and I really hope it delivers more than it did last season. It was mainly the writers strike that caused them to hurry the season though so I do have high hopes that it will be a brilliant season.
Second: the Olympics
I don't hate the Olympics, I love the idea that they are bringing the worlds nations together. I don't dislike Sport, nor am I unpatriotic. But come on, Its taking over channel seven, abotu 7hrs a night olympics is on NON-STOP. Now this wouldn't bother me so much if I wasn't a massive fan of Bones. But do we get any warning, do they give respectable shows like Bones a chance to be seen by its Aussie viewers, OF COURSE NOT. Do I care to see the heats and see the olympics everywhere, NO. Even as I write this there is an add below with Beijing 2008 in it. Enough is enough, make an olympic channel, do something to get it of our good networks. Sorry I know I'm being unreasonable but I really don't like being forced to sit through trial after trial, heat after heat in the olympics just to be told, America won Gold. ITS CALLED HIGHLIGHTS, TRY USING THEM AND CUTTING DOWN THE OTHER NONSENSE. Ok rant over...sort of until next Thursday when I miss Bones again.
What I'm reading:
Anyway just lately I discovered Manga. They are Japanese comics, but before you turn of, do realise there not all for kids. For example I just finished the series DeathNote the other day. Now Deathnote is about a guy named Light who finds a Death God;s (shinigami) notebook. Whoever you write the name of into the book dies, So its not exactly kid reading material. At first Light tries to use it for justice, writing down the names of killers, that he believes deserves to be punished. Of course the power drives him mad and soon he is willing to write the name of whoever stands in his way. The book is also about the power struggle between Light and the detective sent to catch him, L. It's a good series, though if you read it at most sites remember to read right to left. Otherwise the story will get a tad confusing.
Also just recently I read Twilight, which seems to be the New Harry Potter Plague for girls. At the moment it is everywhere. I counted three girls on the train reading it in the afternoon and a few more on the platform. Anyway its about this girl who falls in love with a vampire. I know it doesn't sound like much but give it a go as it is a piece of brilliant writing and it seems to suit most people, despite what genre of book they are usually into.
Anyway I think I'm finished for now, again sorry about the Lurking, I will try to be more sociable in the future. ![]()
