Amazing cast--yet the film was a massive disappointment. Writing was amateur, pacing off, and jokes weak. This should have been at least at 'Hangover' level. What happened?

Among the finest westerns of the late 20th century, Pat Garrett takes on some big issues (the taming of the West, hero worship, the nature of friendship), yet does so with masterful pacing (unhurried and inquisitive), earthy beauty (rough, dirty, yet stunning to look at), and even what you might call elegance...if such a word ever applies to Peckinpah. Note that it's the 1988 director's cut you want to see above all others.
