I picked up two games this week, both on Steam. Torchlight and Borderlands. Would you believe that my Steam Account has 85 games on it? How about believing that my Steam folder is currently 192GB in size and has over 140,000 files? I've had to delete a few games to make some room.

I've played about 3 hours of Torchlight and about 2 hours of Borderlands so far so I can't really conclusively define either game. My initial impressions are quite different for both. I'm enjoying one and not really enjoying the other, I'm sure you can work out which based on my long impressions below! Keep in mind these are very early impressions, I'm curious about how either game changes after you put some serious hours into it.

Borderlands:

The Good:

Shooting works pretty well, lots of random guns but they managed to make the mechanics work well for rifles, machine guns, shotguns and pistols. If you manage to get connected online the netcode seems pretty good. The art st-yle graphics are good, it is very similar to Prince of Persia 2008 but with perhaps more paper cartoon look.

The Bad:

I'm not enjoying it; the vehicle controls aren't very good. There are spawn nodes where the same type of enemy will spawn 5 minutes after you just killed the same group from that exact same location. There is no atmosphere at all in the world, the game relies on being generic and somehow trying to exploit how silly it is (this may be a turn on for some people). With some over the top characters / enemy types. I tried about 40 severs to get a coop game going and connected to just two. Apparently you need to forward ports which is ridiculous, needs a patch asap.

Once connected I was with high level players and I gained 2 levels far away from the action just for being in the world for about 2 minutes. The second match I did lots of random quests at my level with higher level players who were nice enough to help out with good weapons. The quests were standard bore fest run here, get this, and kill this guy. I had to deal with many groups of dog like enemies over and over. The game relies on you to have fun by just killing generic baddies over and over doing so far nonsense quests in a bland world.

There is no "save" the game saves when it wants, which is usually at quest turn in I think. But say you made a trek across the level you can't save there, you must restart from a node in town, this is obviously done to make it coop friendly you just hop in or out of games. Lots of ammo and money scattered around from enemies or in storage containers but you have to press "E" to pick it all up, for ammo and money this is annoyingly unnecessary.

Torchlight

The Good:

Diablo st-yle music, it constantly saves so you can instantly leave the game and come back where you were exactly (preserving the entire world), dungeon crawling action, great loot system with constant upgrades and steady increase of items, pretty good art design great set of powers and skills, automatically pick up gold when you are near it, pet can sell your stuff while you bash monsters, good range of monsters. Treasure rooms, more action orientated with skill types. Some differences in weapons but allow you to play your own sty-le(dual weild, ranged, shield). Four spells to hold, might be things like summon skeleton or fireball.

The Bad:

Inventory is one item per slot no matter size, gems look tiny. Less character than Diablo games, npcs only have like "hello" then wall of text. Some samey looking levels even though they are meant to be random. Loot on ground has overlapping tags. Narrator can be annoying "you have triggered a trap" as flames come out of a barrel – thanks captain obvious.

-----------

So I'm really enjoying Torchlight on the whole, its simple fun and gets most of the action RPG basics right. I think there will be a patch soon to fix the loot on the ground where picking up rare stuff is sometimes very difficult.

Borderlands is not doing much for me so far (I'm level 10), I think it's design motto was "hey let's just shoot stuff together" which honestly doesn't do it for me. I do not think it's a great example of combining the FPS and RPG genres. The most interesting story aspect is the Angel Lady that talks to you from time to time.

While initially you might look at both games and say Torchlight is a casual, Borderlands is less so. I would disagree with that from what I've seen. Torchlight has far more depth in your equipment, skills, pet, attack combinations than Borderlands has had so far. Borderlands seems to be entirely casual, lets join coop and kill things with our guns+2. There are similarities between the two games, they both rely on a loot system to keep the player going I guess and both are doing a decent job with loot. Torchlight has a better story than Borderlands – and Torchlight hasn't got a great story believe me.

Of course these are initial impressions; I've only played a few hours of both. Things could change and please don't take offense if you are really enjoying Borderlands , it's just an opinion. I'm hoping things get better and they patch the co-op so people don't need to forward ports.

---------------

I finished Uncharted 2 again on hard, solidifying the game being among the best. The experience was actually better the 2nd time and difficulty wise it was fine because I knew what was coming. I don't think I will try on Crushing, no need to ruin my experience.

I've tried online but it hasn't been a great experience, matchmaking keeps putting me in with American players and there is some noticeable lag doing things like punching (eg I press punch, I see myself die, then I see I punched some guy to death) I'm not really sure if this is how matchmaking functions on consoles (i.e. very poorly) or is just a quirk with Uncharted 2.

-------------

Has anybody used Xfire game store, or heard any good or bad news about it? I'm tempted to give it a try and see how it compares with others. It's always better to have lots of competition out there, gives consumers more options, lowers prices.

I heard Borderlands is like an offline MMO. Tho I am still going to get it.

Man, so Borderlands sort of tanked? I had a bad feeling it might, and the lack of a proper save system, just makes me not want to get this game.

I was quite impressed with Torchlight, but the whole spiders business is stopping me for now. But I have a feeling I will pick it up soon.

I finally finished working on my Mirror's Edge review. Took me a month, and now I am going to post a blog and go to bed.

By the way, tell me about the save system in Torchlight. Is it just like the demo?

i'm not sure how the torchlight save system is in the demo. But basically there isn't a save item. You leave the game, come back and you are in the same position you left with all monsters dead, loot dropped etc. It's pretty much like Diablo 1, only you don't have that "Save and Quit" menu item.

I'm going to read the UC2 review soon! At least you're enjoying THAT game!!

"lease don't take offense if you are really enjoying Borderlands" OH BUT IT's TOO LATE NOW!1!!!!

Shame you're not enjoying Borderlands all that much. Hopefully I'll enjoy it more - I also have no intention of playing it online. I played the Torchlight demo on Steam and it was pretty fun. A good way to pass the time in an otherwise dull, rainy day.

Great, choices, mate!

Borderlands look pretty fun. I'll probably get it around Christmas time.

That kind of a save system works for me.

Borderlands gets a 6! This game must have frustrated you a lot...

How would Torchlight compare to Diablo 2 online (when it happens)?
Posted Nov 1, 2009 11:23 am PT
@biggest_loser: yep so far its the best game of 2009

@The_PC_Gamer: u better finish it, i told u already my borderlands hate

@Doom_HellKnight: I honestly thought the game was designed for online, but I can't say my experience confirms that. I will say though that if you play online you will need to play with people around your level.

@Crimsader: Thanks lol

@stevo_360: a lot of people are saying that. I guess it's fun if you like to shoot things and get better guns without much thought process behind it

@chandu83: Not sure frustrating is the right word, it's not hard and the save system isn't really a huge issue for me. The game is just not enjoyable to me.

@pvtdonut54: good question. I think it's similar to Diablo and if the transition to online was direct I think it would be reasonably enjoyable, just increase enemy counts and hp, set up a decent trading system.

I'm enjoying the Tourch Light demo and will dwl it soon. I dont understand why borderlands is appealing to ppl as it is essential shoot every thing moves type of game which seems boring.

One other thing to keep in mind is that Torchlight is an indie game. Now I'm not saying that indie games should get a free pass and not be judged on its merits, but I am saying that I'm willing to overlook things in an indie game (made by a few people on a shoe-string budget) that I would not overlook in a multi-million dollar game made by 70 people. Torchlight is also very good on prize i.e. it doesn't cost much and stuff like that matters I think.

Many gamers say they don't factor in stuff like length and prize when it comes to rating games but I do think that parameters like those matters. I personally hated CoD4 simply because it was a full-prized game that I completed in 3 hours and 50 minutes - that's about 13 euros per hour and going to the movies is actually cheaper than that.

I haven't heard that much good about Borderlands so I think I will wait for a serious prize-drop before I get it.

i'm planning to get borderland soon, that game looks good

@pill922: essentially that's what it is. I've tried some coop and single player and I think I prefer the latter because I can set my own pace. In co-op people just seem to run around like chickens with their heads cut off. Although when I think about it, that fits perfectly in with the world they are trying to conjure.

@jepsen1977: It's interesting to compare prices for games. Although I'm not sure torchlight is an indie game since it's made by some big vets of the industry. I guess though the studio is pretty independent and can do what they wish and compared to big studios they are. I see a lot of people argue that games shouldn't be about quantity, to some degree I agree. Bioshock was a great 10 hours. Max Payne 2 amazing 5 hours. But torchlight and borderlands, they are designed for replaying the same thing over and over. And in that case how can you not take into account the fact that one is $20 and the other is $50? I'm not sure how much this price is effecting my opinion of the games. Looking at it now I'd be much happier if the prices were just reversed.

Great post!

Good news about Torchlight. I got this game a few days ago but I'm still finishing the Fate series (from the same developers). The absence of a multiplayer mode is really a negative point, but the game is highly enjoyable, nonetheless. I'll not play it too much until I finish all the Fate games, though.

Now, I also got a bad impression about Borderlands. I actually played it a few hours and I also found the lack of immersion not appealing at all. There is something to be said about being funny, but not that much. I prefer games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which really makes you think that you're a survivalist in a wild, dangerous place.

im delaying my purchase of borderlands, when i come back home ill start uc 2 again sexy game

@ChristianKiss: Phew, I was beginning to think I was the only one who was having an unpleasant time with the game. I definitely know what you mean about atmosphere, comparing it directly to stalker it feels so arcadey, so pointless. I need some story or some meaning. Constantly respawning enemies in an FPS do nothing for me.

@neerajkumar_4: nice Yeah I gotta play some more coop in U2. It's great fun, I might even go back to the campaign in a few weeks.

i am having a gr8 time with Borderlands at the moment , the save system on 360 for the most part is just fine . its a gr8 co op experience , though a bit repetitive at times , storywise its nothing , just kill some dudes , loot some stuff & move on , it misses that exploration satisfaction like fallout 3 had , its a good exp only if its in co op . i ve beaten uncharted 2 once & had it not been for the new games , i would ve definately played it once more , which i will probably next month . torchland got some nice reviews & it looks good , might give it a shot

You can't save manually in Borderlands?
