"This calls for the Jumbo Probe!"
Spiro, from "Destroy all Humans"
The English language is insufficient to address how awful dealing with Microsoft's customer support is. My anger and irritation cannot be described in mortal terms. Some sort of divine language would be needed to describe (without violating the Gamespot filter for swearing) how atrocious my experience with Microsoft's "support" structure has been.
I'm going to do my best to be succinct and passionless in attributing the ghoulish and demonic qualities that Microsoft has expressed to me into plain, unemotional words on a screen for my readers.
1. After dealing with no less than nine (9!) different "supervisors" from the 1-800-4MY-Xbox phone number, I've decided that they are all complete tools and decided to abandon that method of getting any sort of satisfactory resolution and found their corporate number. Should anyone wish to call in just to give them hell, or to support my case, that number is 425-882-8080. Feel free to make them regret that they were ever born. Also, feel free to ask for "Sabrina".
2. Microsoft, both through their off-shore support and their corporate support. does not care about you. Period.
3. The promise made to me has been acknowledged by this company. Apparently, "Eric" mentioned in previous blog, no longer works for the company. (Odd, since less than three weeks ago when I first started pursuing this one of the employees guaranteed that he did.)
4. Since the promise was inconsistent with business policy, it won't be followed. How that promise is MY fault and *I* should suffer for it is not exactly clear.
5. I have an email given to me for complaints beyond Microsoft corporate. I have pursued this. Given that I'd like they not be flooded with complaints while dealing with MY complaint (I'm selfish like that) I won't release it here yet. Yet.
6. As an example of just how much of a pack of liars and slimy rejects these people are, last Wednesday I spoke with a "supervisor" named Carmi about my case. (This is via the 1-800-4MY-Xbox number) and asked my case to be re-escalted.
As I'm not an idiot, I took notes. I was promised that I would be re-escalated. Turnaround was 3-5 business days. I called in today and "George' (Yet another supervisor) said that my case had NOT been re-escalated because it had been rejected before. "How can that be?" I asked. "You guys said you would re-escalate. Now did you, or did you not?" (There may have been a swear word or three mixed in.)
"No, we didn't sir. As I've said sir, you've been rejected already. There would be no point in escalating."
"Then why did you tell me that you did?"
"As I said sir, you've been rejected already. There would be no point in escalating."
(Creative license is taken from this point forward.)
"Does your mother have sex with farm animals?"
"As I said sir, you've been rejected already. There would be no point in escalating."
"At what point did you stop beating your wife?"
"As I said sir, you've been rejected already. There would be no point in escalating."
"Are you Hitler?"
"As I said sir, you've been rejected already. There would be no point in escalating."
(Creative license ending.)
Jim: "This is so much bull (censored)!"
I've written into the latest "escalation path" (translation: "Black hole") to try and get Microsoft to understand that it doesn't matter whether or not a promise made to me was against their policy or not. They've made it. They are bound by it.
I have little to zero hope of any sort of resolution.
Consider me no longer a customer of this company for life. Like the phone company Qwest, they are now dead to me.

Other movie references that come to mind are, for instance, Samuel L. Jackson's immortal utterance from "A Time To Kill".
"Yes they deserved to die and I hope they burn in hell!"
(Note: As always, my jokes are tongue in cheek.)

Because as I sit here, I continue to stew and feel the red-hot anger of the injustice, I'm going to continue to reply (apparently to myself).
This company is dead to me. Further products or services that result in this company earning even a single penny do not exist as far as I am concerned. Even if it is a game like Mass Effect, I'll either acquire it used or not at all. My dollars will not go to support this corrupt institution.

hmmm sounds like it's time for the executive email carpet bomb.
Bill Gates, Chairman of the Board -billg@microsoft.com
Steve Ballmer, CEO - steve@microsoft.com / (425) 706-8448
J. Allard, CTO - jallard@microsoft.com
Robert Bach, President, Entertainment and Devices Division - rbach@microsoft.com
Joe Belfiore, Corporate VP, Entertainment and Devices eHome Division - joeb@microsoft.com
Kathleen Hogan, Corporate VP, Worldwide Customer Service - khogan@microsoft.com
by the way, send each email separately- if you just write one email and CC them all, it gets kicked back as spam
(I got all this from the consumerist website)

If nothing else, it will force people who actually care about the fortunes of the company to see first hand the results of some of their decisions. I have no problem writing long, personalized emails to every single one of those people.
Hell, I've been willing to do that for the anonymous front line grunts. Thanks again.

I've now visited my local video game store and spread the bad word.
Some might say that this is a sign of an unhealthy psychosis. They're probably right.
I like to think of it as a real world example of Karma at work.
At times like these, it is too easy to fall back on the "I'm sure so and so is exaggerating. I've never had any problems with (POS Company X) before."
You'll just have to trust that I give it to you straight.

And to think ... for the less-than-complimentary remarks about Micro$oft that I made in your last blog post, you replied with a "Be nice!"
Please feel free to rescind.
And I agree - ThaSod should be counted a giant amongst men for revealing that list.
Let the fusillade commence ...

This is an educational experience for me. I understand a little bit better why the customers I talk to every day approach me with such distrust, disrespect, and immediate anger. This experience is what they're expecting. ... Wow. I feel a lot less impressed by my awesome people skills now. Expectations this low are pretty easy to beat...

Consider them rescinded. I presumed (incorrectly I guess) good faith on this company's behalf. Now...I'm completely prepared to join the line of folks with torches and pitchforks.
@ChiliDragon
Well, I think at least some of your successes can be chalked up to hawtness.

I am conflicted on that... on one hand he is awesome for helping with the 360. On the other hand, I work in a customer support job! So for that reason I now find him scary

if Microsoft is dead to you , does that mean no more new PCs? (obviously macs are still fair game)

@ChiliDragon
People who do the right thing by the customer have nothing to worry about.
@Allicrombie
****! Tough spot to be in. I guess so. I've made two promises of this type so far. And both have hurt like all hoolies. First, I've promised I won't buy Final Fantasy XIII NEW after Square's decision to release the next Dragon Quest game only on the DS instead of a current gen platform like the successor to Dragon Quest VIII deserves. And then this one, a more broad "I won't left Microsoft profit off of me" promise. The latter one will be difficult, but I'm a man of integrity. I will fulfill this promise. (Unless MS REALLY makes things right.)

My questions falls in the same category as Allicrombie's question. No more Xboxes, Windows bases PCs, etc.?
I totally feel for you. I'll admit that I'm not as resilient as you in this type of situations. Also, to be honest, Microsoft's promise was never likely to be fulfilled. Nevertheless I salute you for your battle against Microsoft.
For the record, this is precisely the reason why I'm holding off on buying a 360 (I want one for the GTA IV expansions as well as the Tomb Raider episodes).

I'm usually a very mild mannered, even-tempered guy. I'm the sort of person who has a couple of very specific "pet peeves" that can set me off, but otherwise am very difficult to annoy. Things like this are one of the things that really aggravate me. But yeah, I guess it does mean no giving Microsoft profit for even things like new PCs. (Unless I acquire the operating system used through legal means or something) The strange thing is, I have two different friends who work directly for Microsoft. They used to be in my poker group but had to move away for new jobs at Microsoft.

Man, that is brutal. I'm calling shenanigans on the no ME2 though
I may believe you'll wait for it second hand, but I think by the time the game comes out, you'll be semi over this and will buy it first day haha. In a semi unrelated note, have you beat Persona 4 yet? If so, how was your experience with it?

Never! Even Mass Effect 2, I will wait until I can get it used or pass entirely. I'm putting it in writing right now. Unless Microsoft steps up and does the right thing, I will refuse to buy NEW my most wanted and most anticipated game currently on my tracked game list. And yes, I've played and beaten Persona 4 twice over. I really enjoyed it, more than Persona 3 in fact.
@payne6705
The lack of vision astonishes me. They're guaranteed to make more money on me over my lifetime as a customer than they would have to extend to make this right now. Simple math really.
@Bioshockraptor
Rum is my alcohol of choice, but otherwise not far off the mark.

Really Jim? Mass Effect 2? Wow. I salute you for your will power and determination. Macs aren't bad products, and iWork is just as good as MS Office...so there you go, no more Microsoft. I'm sure GameStop was happy to hear that you'd be purchasing used games exlusively. I'll let you know how ME2 is

How does Steve Ballmer get a first name email address while Gates has to use the first name/first letter of last name convention? What, when Gates started there was already another Bill Gates?

I would never reccomend this... but it's SO easy to find home numbers and adresses. Nothing says "I demand service" like an anonymous letter with chicken blood on it in the shape of an MS 360 Logo
Ok;... I'm kidding... sort of. Just make a few housecalls until a supervisor realizes that it's easier to service you, than have you pissed. Heck, I was tempted to DDOS the crap out of this site a few times... thank god for maturity and a moral compass, or I would have. That said, there are non-criminal ways to get people's attention. Call people in the MS corporate structure and complain. Lie, etc, to get their numbers. Do... whatever... it... takes. After all, if they can no longer look forward to your custom, at least they can remember you
Posted Jul 1, 2009 8:46 am PT
I'm right there with you. Kinda sucks that I'll miss out on ME2 when it first comes out, but perhaps I can convince a buddy to "trade" systems with me for a week.
Posted Jul 1, 2009 9:06 am PT
@yeah_write
It won't be that big of a sacrifice. There will probably be copies popping up on Craig's List or Ebay within a week of release day or something.
@Bozanimal
If it is anything like the company I work for, once you have a first and last name and a general email format, it is usually pretty easy to figure out that person's email. firstname.lastname@company.com Bill probably had his changed because he was sick of being contacted directly.
@nappan
Yep. All sorts of ways to keep the heat on without being criminal/morally wrong about doing so, and I plan on trying each and every one of them.
@Blackjaw
We're waiting years between games anyway. What's another week or two?

@nocoolnamejim: I knew there was a reason I like you.
Give 'em hell... I got my 360 back and it works... for now. I have no doubt that it will die again, and I'm close to where you are in terms of blind rage. Your ability to be persistant and thorough (in co-op with your honey) is a very admirable thing. Sharing that experience helped me deal with customer "support", so there's one material benefit you can count.

Sorry to sound like a MS rep, but... what was the problem again?
Posted Jul 1, 2009 10:09 am PT
So.... you're going to buy a used copy of ME2? What device are you going to use to play it?
About 10 years ago, for reasons I'm sure you will find boring, I decided that I would never buy a new Marvel comic again. I grew up reading Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, etc. Going to a comic shop every week was part of my routine. It was tough at first, but after awhile it was easy to get used to doing other things instead. Living without a 360 or a PC however, sounds a bit tougher.

Sabrina has been added to my address book with the corporate number. She shall hear from me the next time I encounter any problems.
Really, unless you're in a business environment where MS in ingrained in everything then I find avoiding them to be relatively easy. Then again, I've been an Apple user since the 80's so maybe it's a bit easier for me. Xbox being the exception. If Apple made me so angry that I vowed to never buy/use another Apple product, I'd be hurting.

...Ugh...
See, this is why I always bash rabid, mindless fanboys that devote their body and soul to a certain company. The reality is that we are nothing but numbers to these mega corporations. Statistics that show how much money they are raking in. They don't care about us. My times with Microsoft's exchange program have mostly been positive, outside of the fact that I have to call about every year for a replacement 360 and have to talk to people with only a vague grasp of the English language, but if this ever happened to me you would bet that I would cease to be a customer of Microsoft.
Actually Jim, Microsoft wouldn't be getting TOO much profit from you with Mass Effect 2 or Dragon Age. Most of the profit would be going to EA and BioWare because Microsoft no longer owns the rights to Mass Effect as a franchise. They have just enough pull to prevent a port of ME1 to other consoles.

Last time I called 4MY-XBOX the lady I spoke to barely understood English. I feel your pain man, though MS repaired my console for free even though the website said my warranty had expired.
So while they're process is a pain, it has always worked out for me, I'm saddened to hear that that is not the case for you.

Wow Jim. That sucks. I can't say I'm surprised.. I've been in the computer industry for years, and I'm used to Microsoft's crap, but this is pretty extreme. Love your creative license though, I wish I was there to listen to that conversation in person!
So what started this off in the first place? I've been away for awhile and haven't been keeping up with everyone's blogs unfortunately.

I'm with raven. I was a Sony/Square fanboy for a while, but I've since grown out of that (admittedly, I am a bit of an Atlus fanboy tho, they always include such awesome extras for no extra price!). I'm surprised #2 (MS does not care about you) would even have to be stated. No company really "cares" for you: even if they appear to, it's only because they want to keep you in their clutches as to keep pumping the money outta ya.
I do feel for ya tho jim. Surprisingly, I haven't had any issues with my 1st and only 360 up to now (I bought it x-mas the year before PS3 and Wii was released... so like '06?) barring one incident where the system locked up. A simple power off, power on fixed that... though I'm still always a bit concerned when the fan starts revving hard or I start getting framerate hitches when running around in a game like say Lost Odyssey.
Never been a huge purveyor of MS', but I have always owned a PC, never a Mac or anything else. But if such hardware issues persist into the next console generation, I will not be buying a system past the 360, even if it does have great games.
So... I assume you will not be getting another 360 if MS doesn't send you a free elite? Or will you be picking up a used/refurbished one so your current 360 library won't become an awesomely green bunch of paperweights?

I love Xbox, I love Windows, but damn, Microcash has absolutely awful service. I had to get my Xbox repaired once (Due to my little sister knocking it off the shelf) and I sat for god knows how long on hold listening to the halo theme song play repeatedly as they juggled me around from tech to services to tech again, then to repairs, then to pointlessness and so on....
I agree with you 100%, Jim
