A long, long time ago, games had no speech. Most had little to no plot at all. It wasn't until the 8-bit era that games starting getting some plot and dialogue. Games like Final Fantasy were the start of story-telling in games.
The ESRB was around back then, but there was something you probably weren't going to see on the back of the box. Language. Mild or Strong. It just wasn't around, or at least uncommon. I suppose in the more mature games you might see an h*** or a d*** occasionally, but these occasions were rare, and "language" wasn't something little Johnny's parents ever worried about in games.I'm not really sure exactly when the practice started to take off. It probably was a bit more prevelant during the 16-bit era, and in full sight in the 64-bit. Exactly when it took off doesn't matter. What does, it that did, and that it's sickeningly rampant today. I'm a Christian (as most of you have probably already guessed) and I believe that profanity of any kind is wrong. I'm not going to preach (although I could), but I am going to take this from a secular standpoint, seeing as I might be able to get through that way.The main point is that language in games is unnecessary. It just is. Take a game like FFVII for instance. I might as well say that I'm still in school, and still under my parents rules. I'll never be able to touch FFVII until I'm out of the house for one reason. FFVII is trashed. Full of language. Which begs the question, "Would I even want to play it even IF I was allowed?" Why, I ask? Why is FFVII full of profanity? None of you can give me an answer. Does some yelling d*** have more emotion than someone yelling darn or dang? When a character yells s***, is is SO much cooler than someone yelling "shoot"? No.
There's really nothing else to say besides that. Look at all the recently great games that've been destroyed. CoD4, MW2, Uncharted, Borderlands etc. Games such as Borderlands would not only chalk your experience full of verbal junk, but add in some "inuendo" as well. Because everyone knows games are so much better when everyone cusses 2 times a second and makes disgusting jokes about the ladies. It's psychotic! The experience is worsened! It's certainly not any better, no matter which way you look at it!
Another way you'd think the devs would look at it, is in the way of buisness. There ARE people who aren't going to play MW2 because of language. But answer me this. Would you NOT buy MW2 because there's no language. Yeah I thought so. That's just the point. There are people who are turned off by games with language, but NO ONE doesn't buy a game because there's none in it. So technically, devs are just losing sales. They might not be huge losses, but they do exist. If you've read this far, I appreciate it. I hope that I've at least shown you a little bit, that profanity is games in undue in every way. Peace.-NintendoNaut

Because Profanity makes everything more realistic in pressured situations

My brother plays Grand Theft Auto. That game says just about ever swear in the book. Sure, my parents say it's too mature for him, but it's not that bad as long as he doesn't repeat anything.

I agree with Thru. and Uncharted was not ruined by language, the dialogue was clever, witty and humorous.

I agree with tbc and Sly as well, games need to have language now with all the hits being released but of course there are many differents kinds of language a game can feature.
GTA has many bad language but still people buy it because it's fun and has it's advantages and it needs language so you know what some important characters say when they assign you a mission or something but as well as Sly says it's okay to play it with that kind of language because it was the creator's choice to make it and the people's choice to buy it but not for little kids (they can play it but not repeat the bad words they hear in it and the violence)
But many games need language for you to understand them whether it's good or bad things they talk about and an example that everyone here loves is Kingdom Hearts:Maleficent says imbeciles, stupid and other characters say other offending words but as long as we not repeat them it's okay and if it hadn't language then how would we hear everyone talk about where the Keyholes are located or something even if they say a tiny-bity of bad words, it's just the gamer's choice.

Heh heh, funny how you never comment on my blogs, and for this one you're the number one comment. Lemme shut ya down. As for "rainbows and unicorns" you're insane. Talk about taking it to an extreme. Same with "golly gee willikers." There are expletives that can be used that don't sound like they're from "Care Bears." And in relation to the fact that I'm "not the intended audience," number one, you don't know how old I am, and number two, as a Christian, being mature is being able to resist things that constantly spew evil. Oh, and I love your line, "If you're not going to play a game because of something so trivial like 'language' then it's your lose." Your lose? Nice grammar there.
@EpiphoneMan2008
Why? What's "realistic" about it?
@Slyfur
Believe me, he'll repeat it.
@Nintenkid49
Well, then the comment I wrote to Thru applies to you too. And the dialogue could have been just as good without the crap.

I think you misunderstand. I like SPEECH in games. Like Kingdom Hearts. When I say "language" I mean profanity.

Think about it in real life: you get shot at by some random guy off the street and you are feeling "Well, gosh darn!"? You think something much, much more mature to say to him. The same thing in gaming.
Posted Nov 7, 2009 6:38 pm PT
@razorblade13 - EXACTLY No one is going to say " oh i guess stabbing is fine with me man just pay my hospital bills
THANK YOU " I MEAN WHAT!??! Swearing is natural for me

I agree that a game doesn't have to say the F word as many times as it's said in games these days. I do think, however, that adding curse words in critical moments adds realism and movie-like cutscenes to games. I mean, I'm a Christian too, and if I got stabbed or shot I'd probably yell out a curse word or two. Itdoesn't have to be the F word, but having a curse or two escape the filter every now and then when your life is at stake makes sense. I just hate when games try to make it look "cool" when they have a gang or something walking down the street with their boxers showing saying the F word and talking about girls in a sexually rude manner... What I think is worse than cursing in a game is pointless violence like Postal or sex...

@ImmaMedic
The way I see it, people DO swear in real life. It just doesn't have to be emulated through games.

I also will agree that cursing is a real thing, but cursing doesn't have to be in games. It's so unnecessary. And if it is put in games, you should at least get a content filter.

If you must know, I wrote my comment fast and then after I submitted it, I noticed a few errors and then changed them. I can't say that I care too much about grammar, especially since it's so hard to format the comments anyway.
"Talk about taking it to an extreme." Yeah, I took it to an extreme because that's exactly what you're doing. Basically your entire blog is about how something shouldn't exist just because you and the Christian coalition have a problem with it.
"And in relation to the fact that I'm 'not the intended audience,' number one, you don't know how old I am, and number two, as a Christian, being mature is being able to resist things that constantly spew evil."
The audience for a game isn't always about age. But if I had to guess, you're younger than 17. Being mature has nothing to do with resisting things that spew evil Being mature is being able to handle something you may possibly find unpleasant, and ignore it. Not everything corrupts your soul, like the church wants you to believe. Anyway, evil is completely subjective in the first place. I now you live your lif sheltered from every little thing that could possibly be unpleasant, but wake up. The fact of the matter is, you can't handle reality. Profanity, sex, and violence are marketing strategies. They're helped when people react the way you do. Controversy is the reason games like Grand Theft Auto keep selling so much. Things like this don't go away just because you find them unpleasant.

Hmm, bad language in video games doesn't exactly bother me. I hear it all the time to begin with in everyday life
But I could most certainly live without it!

Listen, sorry about the grammar thing. It was a cheap shot. There's nothing wrong with wishing something didn't exist. The truth of the matter is, language does nothing to add to the gaming experience. That being said, is it really that big a deal to take it out? As for "Not everything corrupts your soul, like the church wants you to believe," we need to get straight that I'm no Mr. Bob Jones University, and I'm not "afraid of reality." That's the whole justification for you people. "Crap in games is okay because it's in the real world, so I might as well subject myself to it." It's true that the world is full of sick stuff, but I believe I should look upon as little as possible. When I do have to look upon it, that's just the way it is, but I'm not going to willingly play a game with loads in it.
@Courtney817
I see what you're saying Courtney, but all I'm saying is I don't think it needs to be in games, which; if I follow, you agree with me on.

Basically what you want is a world where everything is rainbows and unicorns. The developers have the freedom to put profanity in their games just like you have the freedom not to buy it. The hard truth, whether you accept it or not is that people swear. Games are trying to have realistic dialogue. For example, someone gets shot at. They aren't going to say, "Golly gee willikers!" If you're not going to play a game because of something so trivial like "language" then it's your loss. You're not in the intended audience for the game anyway. Part of being mature is being able to handle something you may find unpleasant, and ignore it.
