It's your old pal Monco here with a quick little nugget of information worth it's weight in gold. Or, since an internet article doesn't weigh much, worth considerably more.
As avid gamers, we've all seen our fair share of ignorant hate and bigotry aimed towards our beloved pastime. It seems like not a day goes by when someone isn't advocating banning video games or comparing them to Satan's splooge. Most of us try to rise above it, hoping to show the world that no, we are not all cannibalistic serial killers. Yet still, there is no shortage of condemnation and ridicule towards us and our sick little fantasy worlds.
So the next time you get in an argument with someone advocating the ban of video games, direct them to this delightful article I stumbled upon over at Destructoid.
Though by no means scientific, I found it to be not only entertaining and amusing but a very solid defense against all these encroaching nasties armed with their almighty ban-hammers.
Fortunately, we can always find additional solace in the knowledge that gaming is receiving such negative attention only because it is the new kid on the block in this city of entertainment we call Terra Firma (you do call it that, right?). Just like rock music, movies, porn and countless other forms of (by now well established) entertainment before, video games too shall one day be accepted and celebrated. In fact, we are nearing that day slowly even at this very moment and by the time today's gamers enter tomorrow's positions of government and religion, all this shall be naught but an unpleasant footnote in the grand history of gaming.
Sorry to sound so pompous, but I just loves my vidjamagames.

Firstly, I think you would be very hard-pressed to say that video games caused the Columbine Massacre. Yes, they were obsessed with Doom, this is a well-known fact, but I doubt it was the primary contributing factor. I mean come on, they were both mentally disturbed, Hitler worshiping neo-fascists...They were probably going to do this with or without Doom. It just so happens that they liked the game Doom.
Secondly, I don't see the point in even mentioning the Virginia Tech Massacre, even if just to point out that it doesn't count because games really weren't involved. We all know that the entire "the shooter played video games" was a blatant lie conjured up by Jack Thompson before we even knew the name of the shooter.
Myself, I'm always much more disgusted by the never ending list of horrible things done in the name of God or religious beliefs more than anything.
Ban hispanics working in Texas!
Exactly. Why is it that you can watch classic cartoons on Boomerang or play Monopoly and still be considered adult (which I think is totally acceptable), when people who play video games are labeled as childish or disturbed?
@ gfile:
But I'm betting you've never actually taken your homicidal tendencies into reality? At least I'm hoping you haven't...
But seriously, all humans have homicidal thoughts every now and then, but only the mentally disturbed ones actually do something about it.
@ raven:
I'm in agreement about Columbine. In fact, I think there isn't a case in the history of gaming that credibly linked it with violence. If games wouldn't exist, I'm a hundred percent sure these people would have killed regardless.
Ditto on organized religion.
@ poetsoul:
I couldn't agree more. About the hispanics, that is...
@ beutlich99:
And by extension, you love me too.
I personally don't think Porn is a celebrated form of entertainment. Its not like your girlfriend will ever be awed by your amazing collection on the off visit to your apartment.
My theory on this is that the new media always gets the blame. Video Games, TV, movies, and music all had their turn. However if we go back far enough, I'd wager people though literacy and mass availability of books would lead to society's downfall. I would like to be able to see a fictional world where books actually came around after video games. I think the discussion would go somewhere along the lines of how books don't require much thought and cause children to lock themselves in their rooms for hours at a time. Books are the Devil, in case you didn't know.
Clearly, you haven't seen my collection... Perhaps celebrated is too strong a word, but there's no denying it isn't accepted, which is what I was after in this particular case.
I don't think banning religion would work either (since I strongly believe people should be free to do and believe what they want. Again though, there is no denying that more people have been killed in the name of religion than for anything else.

Pfft... speak for yourself. Plus, if that were the case, monco59 probably wouldn't have any readers.

Sad but true...
