OK, so I bought Left 4 Dead this week and installed it. Due to time constraints, I merely installed it and gave the singleplayer a cursory glance. It seemed okay, which was to be expected since L4D is not in any shape or form a singleplayer experience. This much should be obvious to anyone with a marginally functioning brain (yet, from the looks of some internet forums, a small batch of people continue to contaminate the gene pool).

I figured I'd get to the actual experience later. And so, there the game sat, on my shelf until yesterday. After playing the multiplayer portion for the better part of two days, I can state the following with unequivocal, unwavering and unbiased resolution:

Left 4 Dead is not only THE GREATEST multiplayer game of the year, it is the MOST FUN game I have played in a good long while. Just to hammer home the previous statement, consider this; we have seen the likes of Fallout 3, Dead Space, Crysis Warhead, World at War, Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Fable 2 and many, many more equally earth-shattering games in the last few months alone. Now, I'm not saying that L4D has all these games beat or is superior to them. But when it comes to sheer unadulterated fun, Valve and Turtle Rock have got the market cornered.

Those of you who know me better will also be familiar with the fact that I tend to avoid multiplayer-only games, deriving much greater satisfaction from a gripping singleplayer experience. In light of this, my support for Left 4 Dead is given monolithic weight. The reason Left 4 Dead manages to be so much fun even for us loners is evident in the design and overall philosophy of the game itself. Even though it's been repeated to the point of becoming a cliche, one cannot escape the fact that L4D not only coerces, but downright beats you into a teamplay mentality the very moment you boot it up. This could pose major problems for us hermits (not in the platform sense) if it weren't for the smooth yet unrelenting way the game forces you to play nice with others. A single context sensitive button means you're never overwhelmed with what to do. The radio chatter is automated to the point that you don't even really need a microphone. And the gameplay doesn't rely on fancy tactics that take hours of pre-play planning to execute in order to succeed. All it takes is for four people to be thrown smack dab in the middle of a ravenous zombie horde and they'll find a way to survive... together. This is evident in the many impromptu sessions I particpated in. I was able to team up with three complete strangers and without so much as a word spoken or typed, we supported each other through the nail-biting experience.

Never before have I seen a videogame capable of that. And so we finally get to the point I'm trying to make. Even if you're an anti-social loner with no redeeming social skills whatsoever, you WILL be able to play L4D. And not only that, you WILL have fun.

So join the zombie apocalypse and have some fun.

My girlfriend wants this game really bad, and keeps nagging me to pick it up too so we can all play with some of our other friends. But...I'm not really in a position to buy another game right now. Oh sure, I'm sure the game is amazing, but I can't really afford another game at the moment; I'd need to dip into my account, and I rather that money stretch as long as possible.

raven, my dear friend. I don't think you understand what I'm saying here. Left 4 Dead has been genetically engineered from a strand of Jesus' hair. You need to get this game.

Though I can sympathize with your monetary situation. After all, we can't all have my stunning prescience, which enabled me to start saving for this glut of gaming well in advance.

I must say the game is incredibly fun. Plenty of run and gun with lots of exploding zombie heads makes for a good time in my books.

Also, Raven -- you're not aloud to have a girlfriend that wants to play something like L4D, that's not fair to the rest of us. I command you get yourself a normal woman so you're stuck like the rest of us.

Jesus, what is with people and not being able to find girls that game? Am I just some sort of freak of nature that somehow lucked out and met a lot of girls that play games? Seriously, I grew up ignorant of how gamer girls are supposedly rare because I know a lot of them...In fact, the two buddies my girlfriend wants to play Left 4 Dead with is two of our best friends: A guy and his girlfriend. Are gamer girls really THAT RARE in other places?!

I am so very glad to hear you are enjoying this game! I too usually stay away from Multi-Player games because of alot of reasons. I may have to check it out sometime very soon!

It's times like this when I just hate living in a place that can't provide decent Internet Service... Even if I wanted to play this gem (according to you at least), the lag would kill the experience, as it does with any other MP game I try.

Rulze:

...Again, this has never been an issue for me...

I'm a freak of nature, ain't I?!

@ xbr & raven:

This may be a tad off-kilter, but your back-and-forth yammering about finding chicks who game has brought to my mind a rather humorous, albeit disturbing notion. I'm sure you all know George Lucas' masterful epic, Howard the Duck. Remember when that chick Beverley is whining to Howard about how she can't seem to find the right man and Howard coolly replies that maybe it's not a man you should be looking for. To this, Beverly of course quips her classic line of "You think I might find love in the animal kingdom?"

My point? Well, if you can't seem to find that right, gaming girl, maybe you too should reassess your criteria.

@ sandpiper:

Please do. We need all the help we can get fighting back this undead menace.

@ danthegamer:

Or you could always go with the PC version... right?

@ sydoggxxx:

I guess me praising Left 4 Dead just makes it all the more unbearable, huh? Sorry.

Left 4 Dead is awesome though!

I wasn't sure about this game given I could never quite decipher whether it was multiplayer only or whether there were bots (guess I'm swimming in the shallow end of that pool, eh?). I heard there was local co-op which piqued my interest a lot more (though you can't confirm that for me since you obviously have the PC version). But from your glowing pre-review, I might even pony up for Live Gold. And maybe even a headset.

You know, when I get some money.

sorry man, my PC struggles playing Battlefield 1942, let alone L4D!!! I don't know how much it would cost to get my PC good enough to play cool new games

Dude it's awesome isn't it? Everything about the game is awesome. Awesome! It could well be the most awesome multiplayer game since the awesome Team Fortress 2, which was awesome. Although that was made by the same awesome devs so no surprise there right? If you need another wing-man add me on steam!

P.S. I have used the word AWESOME an awesome 9 times in this post (currently a world record for this blog!)

@ bacchus:

The people contaminating our gene pool are the ones that complain about L4D's "st00pid" singleplayer. So no, I'm pretty sure you're still a ways off from that beach.

To answer some of your questions, the game does indeed have bots. Even though they can be quite intelligent, they lack that human touch and camaraderie which makes L4D so fun to begin with. And yes, I'm pretty sure the 360 version has split-screen co-op, which can be played both online and off.

@ danthegamer:

The Source engine is a very forgiving piece of code in terms of system requirements, but maybe not enough in this case.

@ Stealthos:

Not only is it awesome, it's beyond awesome. Which is awesome in itself.

Not quite 9 times, I know but I'll break that record someday.

I'm moved. Typically I'm like you - I don't like to buy a game without a strong single-player experience, and I had my doubts as to whether the multi-player experience of L4D is going to be a long-lived attraction to the game. Could something like this really be worth a $60 pricetag? But you make me want to give this game a second look... I'm definitely willing to be proven wrong.

For me, it would absolutely be worth 60 bucks. I however, bought the PC version which was about 45 euros. That translates to about... 60 bucks.

Well, it was still worth every penny.
