The path is now known.

I was offered a promotion Monday and accepted it yesterday. It is another step up the management ladder and will see me enter a secure position which is safe from the possible retrenchment I faced in the other role. HOWEVER, the positives and negatives are not quite as I expected. Here are the revisions:

Positives - Secure position, challenging work, an assistant and SOME flexibility for study.

Negatives - Cut back in studies.

I've had to reduce my uni hours from two to one subject per semester for now. This one subject only takes 2 hours every week. While I'll be 104 by the time I finish the course, it is a hobby after all and I'm just happy I've got the opportunity to keep doing it.

Most of the focus will now be on the new job and it will be pretty full on. My new title is also a mouth full. I don't know how I'll fit it on a business card.

With all the talk on banks and what not, I expect you've all fallen asleep at this point. I just wanted to thank everyone for their helpful comments in my previous blog. It certainly played some part in helping me reach a decision.

Edit: I decided to change the avatar. Go Calvin!

I guess I should say congratulations on the promotion, and what did you mean by giving up your avatar in the previous blog? Do you mean leave GameSpot?

Your fingernails are almost as long as your title!

glad to hear you can keep doing Uni!

Cactus_Matt - *shakes cane* you young'ns shouldn't allowed to play PG games!

Bioshockraptor - My avatar and uni are both science in nature. Give up one, give up the other.

Foolz3h - A good manicure is essential!

congrats on the promotion, who knows maybe in 3 years time you can add the physicist to your title and sound even cooler

monkeyd_93 - That's the dream!

Sounds like that might be an interesting job for someone who likes numbers. Must be a tough balancing act, determining products that are competitive yet still profitable, especially when I assume we are talking about many millions of dollars worth of business/consumer lending.

Congrats on the promotion. Sucks that you have to cut back on your studies, but having job security NOW is a little more important in this day and age. At least you still CAN study. Enjoy passing out your block of text business cards!

That's cool. My card says 'Assurance', and we basically do EVERYTHING.

I am glad everything turned out well for you Mike.

Oh yeah, and stop creating complex products that are what caused this mess we are all facing right now.

Debtor Financing? Hey, you could get me a loan! And also, you'll need to eat some healthy food if you want to live till 104.
Posted Aug 21, 2009 6:16 am PT
You could always just say now that your avatar will be what you look like when you finish your studies

But anyway though, at least you still get to experience some of both worlds (even with a bit of a compromise), so if you ever get the urge later on to change careers later on (hey, there's always a mid-life crisis! ), the avenue is still open.

Congrats on the promotion, mj.

Good on you MJ . Nice to see a good outcome out of it all. I bet the assistant was what sold it for you wasn't it? .

Good to hear you got the promotion. That is a longggg title , I had one like that one time, that I was to embarassed to even put on my business cards it was so insane! Good luck.

Congratulations on the promotion! Nice to hear the path of MJ is leading to a secure job and some flexibility for study. All the best on both fronts.

bacchus2 - Will be a challenge indeed. Billions of dollars!

@JustPlainLucas - 99% of the business cards I hand out go into those competition bowels at restaurants
Posted Aug 21, 2009 4:45 pm PT
@Lightfellower - You assurance guys should have picked up on the mess we were brewing
Posted Aug 21, 2009 4:49 pm PT
@paul939 - I'll be 104 before I give you a loan! Debtor financing is like a line of credit extended to businesses. When they charge someone for their services and give them (say) 30 days to pay, the supplier can get that money immediately from a bank with debtor financing and pay it back gradually.

G013M - I'll save the mid-life crisis for a little later, thank you very much!

ArmoredCore55 - Thanks AC

COD4_Shinedown - It's good to have someone under me again. I lost all my staff during the big exodus earlier in the year. .

btaylor2404 - Plans for next week? Think of a shorter title for the business card and email signature

PAJ89 - Thanks mate

Congratulations on the promotion, and it's nice that they're letting you do some study, even if it's not as much as you want.

Awesome job title by the way.

Good to hear that you got promoted.

Nice work with upgrading your job title and all, mj. Hopefully you do get a chance to finish that Physics degree thing-o in time to put it into effect.

Looks like it worked in your favor. Job security and able to continue your studies.

Best of luck with your new job. It may not be the most exciting thing in the world but it does provide you with enough money to have a comfortable lifestyle(with kids perhaps?). Being able to continue your studies is awesome to.
