My mother recently asked me if the name Grace Lee Whitney rang a bell. I told her it did not. She proceeded to tell me that Grace Lee Whitney was the actress who played Yeoman Janice Rand in the original Star Trek series. In case you're not familiar, on Star Trek, she was the blond babe best known for her micro-mini uniform and unrequited crush on Captain Kirk. In real life, Whitney had had a versatile film and television career in the 1950s and 1960s, working with the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Yeoman Rand meets Charlie

My mom then proceeded to tell me some interesting history on Whitney. After appearing in thirteen episodes of the 1966 season of Star Trek, her character was written out of the show. The sense of failure and rejection she felt sent her into a tailspin of alcoholism, drug abuse, and sexual immorality. She got to the point where she was drinking on skid row street corners right out of the bottle. Hospitalized, she was told by her doctors that the gin she had been drinking was eating a hole in her esophagus, and had nearly destroyed her liver. If she didn't stop drinking, they said, she would be dead within a couple weeks. Whitney was scared but she didn't know how to stop drinking.

A friend took her to a recovery group, where the group said the Lord's Prayer together. Although the prayer had always sounded like gibberish to her, at that moment it suddenly made perfect sense. It was the first time she ever really knew that God cared for her and she immediate stopped drinking and using drugs. In the weeks that followed, God led her on a journey to Israel. On a walking tour outside of Jerusalem, she came to a gate with a sign that read "Garden of Gethsemane." In her autobiography, The Longest Trek, Grace Lee Whitney recalls what happened next,

"I put my hands on the iron bars of the gate and looked through, into the Garden of Gethsemane. Suddenly, I felt weak, as if I was about to faint. I had to hold onto the bars to remain standing. Then I saw Jesus. He was beyond the iron bars, praying in the garden.

. . . I thought, But I'm Jewish! As if He could read my mind, He turned and looked at me and said, "So am I."

After that experience, Grace Lee Whitney gave her heart and life to the Lord Jesus Christ. She was set free from her addictions, her enslavement to immorality, and her sense of failure. Today, she goes to Star Trek conventions and women's prisons and television talk shows, telling everyone who will listen about the Lord and what He has done in her life.

Olive Tree

To quote Spock, I found her story "fascinating" and thought I'd share it here, as we observe Passover, Good Friday and Easter. (The above photograph is an ancient olive tree from the Garden of Gethsemane - striking, huh?)

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend, and may His Presence be very near.

What a lovely seasonal blog - thank you so much for sharing. It sounds like that recovery group might be AA. I don't know for sure, but I think they say the Lord's Prayer there. I'm sure glad her life was turned around because so many of these stories turn out bad.

Happy Easter and God Bless you and hubby. And yes, it is a striking picture.

What a miracle! And what a testimony! Thanks for sharing the story. Have a blessed Easter.

Thank you for sharing that story. Out of work actors are some of the most depressed people. I'm glad she found peace with God. Happy Easter!

According to legend, Nicolette "Uhura" Nichols almost ran into a similar situation. Near the end of the first season, she felt was being underutilized and thought about quitting "Star Trek." A chance encounter with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. not only convinced Nichols to stay on the show, but to do volunteer work for the poor and unfortunate.

I don't recall ever seeing any of the episodes she was in. That's a nice, happy, inspiring Easter story. Thank you!!

"Blonde babe"--well yes, that does describe the yeoman's character. I didn't realize she was written out of the series, although I've never actually watched the original series in order (It was over before I was born, so I've only ever seen reruns, and most of the time they don't stick to strict sequentiality, I don't think.). Cool story. Thanks for sharing it.

Interesting, I didn't know much about what happened to Whitney after her original stint on Trek, although Rand was one of my favorite characters. I wondered why her career seemed to come to a stop in the '70s. I'm glad she's found peace and continues her work. Happy Easter!

Karl, yep, I thought it sounded like AA, too. She was really rescued.

Thanks, IndianaMom. By the way, I shared your "By His Wounds" clip with two of my co-workers and my husband - very touching.

tvking, did you end up watching any of the Easter films this weekend? I was going to notify you that The Ten Commandments was on ABC Saturday evening. We watched that and part of King of Kings last night.

HeyStuart, I hadn't heard that about Nichelle Nichols...she is probably my favorite among the cast. And of course, she and Bill Shatner were part of the first interracial kiss ever broadcast on television during this series.

Sallenj, my mom figured I might know who Whitney was, only because I am one of the biggest Trek nerds around. However, when I came to this site I quickly realized I was only an amateur nerd compared to some on that forum

jokipper, it's funny if you read her film and television career credits from the 1970's onward...you start seeing Disney and other children's film credits, whereas prior to that she was co-starring with Marilyn Monroe and Groucho Marx.

Thanks for sharing this story - and those olive trees are neat!

I did watch most of The Ten Commandments, but, wouldn't you know it, I fell asleep just before the parting of the Red Sea, and woke up again after Moses received the Ten Commandments. No biggie, since I have the DVD set. It has great features, including a disc with the 1923 version, also directed by DeMille, and both versions include pretty good audio commentary by Katherine Orrison, author of a book about the making of the movie. I have the book, and I'm about halfway through it.

Easter morning I watched Quo Vadis? on DVD (as I said in my own blog, I can't believe Movietome doesn't have an entry for it, it was only the box office champ of 1951). It also has some excellent special features, including a very interesting documentary about the movie epics of Hollywood's Golden Era. I also watched a DVD about the life of St. Rita, who lived in the 15th century.

I actually got to know Grace after meeting her at a caberet performance at a local Star Trek convention. She was telling us that the reason for her getting let go on the show was because of her sexual antics. She was actually a sex addict before she was let go. She's a remarkable woman, and she was giving me advice about my Grandmother.. who was an alcoholic at the time. I got to hold her glass of water while she tied her sneaker up. Hehehe!

Um.. why does the time of my post read 12/31/1969. Peculiar!

You met her? how cool! Yeah, I had read earlier that there were rumors of her being into prostitution in her old life. I've yet to meet any of the Star Trek cast, although if I had the choice I'd have picked Jimmy Doohan.
