...when you're wandering lost in wilderness who is there to help you (technical support)? A ranger
...when you go on a guided tour at a National Recreational Area who is there to show you the ropes (how to gamespot)? A ranger.

JodyR
GameSpot's Community Manager

I, along with other users will be becoming GameSpot Rangers, a new rank of GameSpot volunteers, that have the purpose of improving GameSpot's community by helping other users on how to use GameSpot and with technical problems. GameSpot Rangers are not Moderators by any means.

We have already received a GameSpot Rangers handbook, which outlines what the role is, and its purpose. We will also be getting our own exclusive GameSpot Rangers emblem, as a compliment with the role.

I am very much looking forward to this new role, and when this will all officially take place, I'm not sure of. Apparently, this idea has been in development for quite a while, but now, it is approaching to the point of being implemented into GameSpot.

Essentially, I will still remain a Greeter at How to GameSpot, the GameSpot Rangers role is really just a way of making it official. Also, I have been a Greeter at How to GameSpot for over a year now ( I became a Greeter on 31st July 2008 ), so this is a nice way to celebrate that.

Oh, I see what this is like. It's like the mentor program in FFXI. When you turned on your mentor status, you get bombarded with all sorts of questions from noobs about how to play the game. Well, have fun being bombarded by the noobs.

siberian, it's not a essentially a moderator. It's exactly what you were doing before, helping out in How to GameSpot.

Although the handbook describes what tools we can use and for what reasons to use them (that's maybe the part that caused you to misinterpret what the role is), we are definitely not Moderators. The role of GameSpot Rangers are pretty much what we've been doing for over a year now siberian.

Only difference is, we're getting a brand new makeover.

@siberian142 - Michael is right. It's really just a makeover, and more official than a UCB mod, but nothing else has changed. It's not essentially moderating, because you won't be moderating anybody, just like before. You will just continue to help out in How to GameSpot, by answering questions there, working on stickied threads, and locking threads there, just like before.

Caddy's right... nothing's changing really except that it's being recognized as a "new" GS volunteer position. There are rangers, and there are moderators.

@Caddy & Mailer - I know now. I misread the handbook and got confused by G's Mod Tags. I.
