GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

A year(ish) ago I made my first ever public New Year's resolution, to play more games (specifically anything scoring 8.5 or higher on GameSpot). Twelve of the best months in gaming for a long time later, and I'm not surprised to report I have fallen woefully short. I started off strong, but it all started to go downhill when Pokemon Diamond got a high enough score to mean I had to play it. I just really couldn't bring myself to play a Pokemon game. Partially because it's Pokemon and, you know, Pokemon, but mostly because I don't ever want to be able to talk with any level of expertise about Pokemon, a man's got to have some standards after all. Pokemon Diamond, of course, was not one of the games of the year so I might be able to let it slide. Not really, let's have a quick run through the GOTY nominees to see how many good games I missed out on this year.

Bioshock - I played the demo when it came out on Xbox Live, but that's it. My excuse? Absolutely none whatsoever. I wanted to play it, had the opportunity and time to play it, but just never played it. Chalk up another game for me to play when it gets a price drop.

Call of Duty 4 - Played through the single player on PC, yet to get into the multiplayer. Very good game, but I felt that the relentless forward motion normally required in Call of Duty games didn't sit so well in a modern setting. Nevertheless the Chernobyl and AC-130 missions are two of the best individual levels I have played for a long time.

Crysis - I have purchased, installed and started playing Crysis. I also spent nigh on $3000 buying a new PC to play it on, including SLI 8800GTs. Just to let you know, that's not enough, you still have to mess around with the settings an awful lot to get the framerate at an acceptable number. Besides that, I haven't played enough of it to form a serious opinion of the game, except to say that the first hour or so is pretty underwhelming.

Forza 2 - Haven't been near it, not interested. I really don't do racing games.

God of War 2 - I've given my thoughts on God of War 2 previously, but here's a summary: Bigger and more impressive than the first, with some truly epic boss fights. The story and atmosphere of the sequel, however, is a long way short of the original. Probably one of the best games to come out on the PS2.

Halo 3 - I've played through the single player campaign in co-op about one and a half times. To be honest, I lost track of the Halo story about halfway through Halo 2, so I have nothing to say about it as a concluding chapter. I also think that changing the primary enemy from elites to brutes changed the dynamic of the game for the worse. Because the brutes do not have recharging shields the player is no longer required to play in a run-and-gun style, which turns Halo 3 into a much more standard shooter in which you sit behind cover taking pot shots at enemies until they die. Multiplayer-wise, Bungie continue to set the mark for online community features with the replay features, improved stat-tracking and so forth. Regardless of whether or not you like Halo's multiplayer, the quality of the features surrounding it is unmatched.

Rock Band - Wouldn't know, it's not out in Australia yet, and in fact it still doesn't even have a solid release date here.

Super Mario Galaxy - I've played a fair amount of Galaxy and I have to say that it hasn't impressed me a whole lot. Rather than repeat someone else's words, check out the Zero Punctuation review of the game. It's worth noting that this was definitely the best Wii game to come out in 2007, but that's really a feat on the order of winning a fist fight against Stephen Hawking.

The Orange Box - From a GOTY perspective, we have to ignore Half-Life 2 and Episode 1, which just leaves Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal. For my money, Portal is close to being a GOTY contender by itself. Add in Team Fortress 2, which I haven't played but has caused sleepless nights among quite a few people at my work, and you need a very good reason to not make The Orange Box Game of The Year.

World In Conflict - I have bought this game, but not yet played it, so that's probably all I can say about that.

So of the nine nominees, I've played 3 enough that I feel fully qualified to talk about them, and another 3 a bit. Maybe I'll do better next year. It's probably best not to bother with a resolution though, try and keep the amount of self-inflicted failures for the year to a minium.

On an entirely unrelated note, I spent a few days over the Christmas break coding and putting up a blog at http://stripeshop.metagnome.net mostly as a coding project because that's the kind of totally not-nerdy-at-all thing I do when I'm on holiday. Anyway, it's going to be serving as a place for my musings on more esoteric and technical game design stuff, including board games, card games, any games I can get my hands on really and whatever I get up to with the XNA toolkit. GameSpot is staying as my usual outlet for rants and comments on computer gamery and other random stuff, but if you don't get enough metagnome with my sporadic GameSpot updates, feel free to check out the Stripe Shop.

Pokemon was the system seller for the ds. It's the initial reason for me buying the ds. If you don't like pokemon diamond and from your list i'm assuming you haven't played a good ds game, why did you buy a ds? And playing only 8.5+ by gamespot standards only? That's rather limiting since even though their opinions are informed, their reviews are not absolute.

An amazing year for games, a testiment to it being that most of us will be recovering from the 2007 hangover by playing many of those games we missed first time around. Im relishing playing a lot of the games on your list that my wallet didnt allow me to last year.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 2:43 am PT
There are different kinds of game genres. There are adventures, RPGs, racing games... If you want to play all the games that reach 8.5 or more, you mean all the games in the genre that u want. So you dont have to explain yourself about Pokemon, because many like you wouldnt dare lay a hand on such a crappy game. I mean it's probably okay, but it wont be as good as the first ones that came out, now its just repeating itself over and over again.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 2:47 am PT
That's a nice list, mate. I usually get pulled by some lame nostalgia warcraft 3, genesis emulator or free2play poop crap before I even reach 1/3 of my lists. :p But you seem to have done all right, don't worry about it. You played Call of Duty, Halo and Orange Box, so yeah, you've done good, now rest.

It really was an amazing year for gamers, maybe the best we have seen so far! Looks like you might have a very busy 2008 trying to make up for what you missed. And to yourself a favor and give Forza 2 a try, even for non-race fans it is worth it.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 3:15 am PT
umbracascade: I played a bunch of games not rated highly by GameSpot, those were just the games I had initially intended to play no matter what. Also, Mario Kart, Meteos and Phoenix Wright have been good to me on the DS.

next year will be infinitely better... trust and believe
Posted Jan 4, 2008 4:29 am PT
great year for games 2007, we've got so much to look forward to, so long as your upgrade your compy to the latest n greatest.
GOW on the PS2 is a amazing game, maybe a GOW 3 is lurking around?
Posted Jan 4, 2008 4:57 am PT
Forza Motorsport 2 is great. Certainly a lot of cars to choose from and probably the best racing game on the Xbox 360 at the moment.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 5:51 am PT
With all due respect for some reason this wasn't an editorial I enjoyed reading, something rather rare. Still, great year for games.

If you're running Vista on that 8800 GT SLI setup then dump it and put XP back on, your Crysis framerate will double just from that alone. And you CAN have Very High settings in XP, I wrote a blog about how to do it.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 7:14 am PT
Thank god someone that does not worship Crysis. I think some people can't stop screaming about its awesomeness (awesomeness is a word according to the gamespot spellchecker!!) just because they bought exspensive pieces of hardware to play it. It is so mediocre, just any other shooter with an unoptimized engine. Yeah it looks nice, and all that rot, but its a bear to get to run well, and once you do its just another shooter. I am a supersoldier in super armor suit fighting (some Koreans) nasty aliens! How new and exciting. Yeah, it has some nice neat little features, but I went back to playing CoD4 pretty fast, sprinkled with some Unreal.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 7:15 am PT
Dude, you missed out on Drakes Fortune and Ratchet (thats assuming you may own a ps3, if you don't, ignore the comment)
Posted Jan 4, 2008 8:34 am PT
The thing that I think makes Crysis so freaking great is that you can play it any way you like. The environments are big enough that you can really plan out an attack and execute it a whole bunch of different ways. Add to that the nanosuit mechanic, and you have a game that tailors itself to the way I want to play even more. You can be stealthy, you can run and gun, you can go all brute force on everybody, and you can do any of these things at any time! I just think that Crytek made brilliant decision after brilliant decision on this one. This is probably my GOTY.

COD 4... Honestly, that first level in the ship is FUGLY. I thought it looked like a PS2 game. For a game that everybody raved so much about the graphics, I am seriously underwhelmed. Assassin's Creed looks about a million times better than this, as do Crysis, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3 and Team Fortress. I don't know... I thought I was sick of WWII and that's why I didn't like COD 2 or 3, but now I'm starting to think that it's just the way these games are structured. It's too rigid for my taste. It's almost like a shooting gallery. The AI is about as complex as a shooting gallery. And I think it's too fast; you never get a sense of your location before guys are jumping out at you. I know this is supposed to keep the tension constantly high. But I don't think that works.

Great year for games...too bad you missed Rogue Galaxy and SMT: Persona 3.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 8:53 am PT
Man you failed big time i am not even attempting to play all the best games of the year but i managed enough of them to thrash your poor list. Hey better look next time mate oh and your comment about COD4 was spot on
Posted Jan 4, 2008 9:39 am PT
Out of the Orange Box, my personal favorite was TF2, it was easily the most fun I've had with a game last year, and my personal GOTY. I liked Portal, but I just don't see why so many people consider it the greatest part of the Orange Box.

And yeah, Crysis gets really great about 2 hours in, and then gets not so great once you enter the alien ship.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 9:50 am PT
Pungaboy,

If being able to play it anyway you want is such a big deal, FarCry. And FarCry did it better. It allowed for tactics and tackiling things from diffrent angles and situations. Crysis made me laugh the first time I realized after all the talk of "Open Gameplay" that most of the areas in the game were the old school corridor crawls. They were prettied up with trees and cliffs and what not, but walls they still were. And the play as you like idea kinda bottoms out to "Do I want to sneak up and stealth kill 2 of 8 koreans before its just a firefight, just run in killing 8 koreans, or maybe just turning on the speed and running by these 8 koreans.

And CoD4 looks nice AND runs at a smooth 83 fps on my machine with all the bells and whistles turned on. Crysis runs at a slideshow pace of 31 fps. Unreal? A lovely 76 fps. I have the rig for this damn game. I meet or pass the "requirements". This is an angry bear of an engine that doesn't want you to play it.

I haven't bought crysis (anything that requires a super conductor to run doesn't deserve 35 quid to pay)
Orange box is nice but i'm annoyed that as a pc owner i already own 2 copies of HL2 and a copy of episode 1... i sold my soul to valve. Portal is a fun game though.
World in conflict i have, a bit of the berlin wall was definately one way to get pc people interested.. as for the game. Its ok... i wouldn't rate it better than company of heroes (with addon) or age of empires 3 (with all the addons especially asian empires). Rockband also has no british release date.
Mario... haven't found a reason to buy a Wii yet as i own all the last gen consoles + DS and PSP
Shame apart from Witcher, rpgs on the PC sucked balls last year. NWN2 is appalling. (Bloody camera views)
Halo 3, i played on a mates pc, found it dull. So its got multiplayer, so has doom 1
Call of duty 4 i have been tempted but with no co op and really short single player means I have yet to purchase it (I took the gamespot view to heart).
Overall not bad year but i'm a pc owner first, so have a weird way to look at things.

I recommend Pokemon Pearl because I thought it was a great game and in the top 5 2007 games for sure.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 11:46 am PT
like other people said, if you don't play games lik diamond/pearl and phantom hourglass, no point in keeping a DS, personally my GOTY was somewhere between halo 3 and super mario galaxy, even though I played all the games on your list except crysis
Posted Jan 4, 2008 12:24 pm PT
What about Assassin's Creed? That was a GOTY candidate, right?
Posted Jan 4, 2008 1:02 pm PT
Just taking issue with the NWN 2 comment. Its the best PC RPG I've played since BG2. The Camera view has been fixed in an update, not that I found it prohibitive in the first place.

Still, a great year for games, and like most people I'll be playing catch up well into next year...

Orange Box was such an amazing set of games. If anything it deserves kudos for Innovation. They even have a special Orange Box version of Peggle included in the Orange Box you download off of Steam. I've played Halo 3 it was fun but I think what made it fun was the fact that the levels were new (I was never one to play the multiplayer). I find it funny that you played pokemon. It is true I used to play that game. I never focused on collecting them all so much as I wanted to make the ultimate party. But that always comes down to how much time you waste leveling up and painstakingly adjusting stats of your pokemon. I will state that pokemon is not a game it is an addiction. Once you get addicted people around you realize that (and tell you). I played over 100 hours on Diamond (unlocked all the legendaries I could, traded online. etc). There was a part of that game I loved that few games have (leveling up, customizability of stats, and rock paper scissors style advantages/disadvantages). But the cutesey pokemon, weak non battler pokemon that I had to organize through, time involved to get done what you wanted done was too draining. Pokemon is initially fun if you like the party building element. Call of Duty 4 and Mass Effect: I've heard great things about both but I've never played them. I beat Super Mario Galaxy. That game was pretty fun initially but it got old as all games do. When I was done what I unlocked felt more like an obligation to replay the game than a prize.

World In Conflict: I heard it was a step backwards in strategy games (as they remove all the structures, and equalize monetary gains). But I suppose it is innovation when you mix up the traditional formula.

I plan on getting God of War 2 (that game looks awesome).
Posted Jan 4, 2008 4:28 pm PT
SMG - It's worth noting that this was definitely the best Wii game to come out in 2007, but that's really a feat on the order of winning a fist fight against Stephen Hawking.

wowsa... the best funny I've had thus far in 2008 good luck in yer gaming endeavors this year
Posted Jan 4, 2008 4:41 pm PT
Christmas has left me in an odd predicament. I just got so many darn games, that I can't find the time to play them all. Mario, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, COD4, UT3, BioShock, Mario Party 8; basically every amazing game that came out this year (well, excluding Mario Party - not that special). Not to mention I'm hooked on Team Fortress 2. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. It's just... wow.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 4:49 pm PT
I'm in a similar predicament; I've been trying to play through games, but every time I finish one, there seems to be 2 or 3 more worthy of my attention. I could easily list 15 available games for the 360 and Wii I have to desire to play, and a few more if I owned a PS3.

Also, Rock Band just turned up on my suppliers radar. I think the date was 15th March for Australia. Here's hoping it comes forward, can't wait to get my hands on it!
Posted Jan 4, 2008 5:31 pm PT
There's nothing I distrust more then someone too 'good' to play Pokemon. And your ho-hum summation of Galaxy almost made me cry. Well, you know, if I were the sort to start blubbering every time someone disagrees with me.

On a more serious note though, I do sympathize with your plight. I was only able to play a fraction of the games I wanted to this year.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 6:17 pm PT
I think the only game that I wanted to play last year but couldn't/didn't get around to would be Mario Galaxy. I'm pretty pissed that it's STILL hard to find a Wii.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 7:28 pm PT
Well, to be honest I kinda enjoyed reading this but it was quite lame...It would be nice if you had a bit more explanation about each game and what you thought about it. Good anyway
Posted Jan 4, 2008 8:04 pm PT
i think i played every game rated 8 or higher for the xbox 360 this year. i still need to play mario galaxy and zelda phantom hourglass i just haven't got around to it. i also dont care much for call of duty's combat system. it's not as smooth as it should be. your right about portal for sure. most memorable game and innovative game i've played in a long time.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 8:48 pm PT
"World In Conflict - I have bought this game, but not yet played it, so that's probably all I can say about that."

Why?

I think Super Mario Galaxy was excellent. A great addition to the Mario franchise. One of the best in my opinion. What impressed me about the game was that collecting stars stayed fresh due to the many different challenges and variations throughout each scenario. The ending was also superb IMO.

Your goal was a hard one to accomplish, hence you failing. Gaming is growing more popular by the second. Hopefully you'll have the same troubles in '08. You can never have too many games to play... or can you?
Posted Jan 4, 2008 10:30 pm PT
Limit yourself to a system perhaps? No one can be even remotely hard on you for not playing all the 8.5+ games O.o That's a lot of time! Also, you may want to start your tracking year at the beginning of November, that way you actually have time to play all the holiday releases in the lull Spring.
Posted Jan 4, 2008 11:28 pm PT
NWN 2 comments regarding the Camera is fair game but give it a bit of tweaking and its fine honestly.
Posted Jan 5, 2008 2:28 am PT
You seriously need to spend more time with those games before you pass judgement on them. SMG, for instance... you are really missing out. It takes a few hours of play to readjust to 3-D Platforming, and the control design, but once you do, you'll likely find it to be one of the best games you've played in awhile. Secondly, Bioshock is absolutely amazing. But people who are weened on PC games don't seem to be as impressed with it as console gamers do, having played similar masterpieces like System Shock 2 for years. But I still definitely recommend it. And CoD4's online is the best I've ever seen - on a console, bar-none. Play more before you judge.
Posted Jan 5, 2008 3:05 am PT
Yeah, I'm with you, dude. Though I didn't get a 360 until mid-November, and for most of the year, the Wii didn't really have much to offer. I've been trying to catch up ever since, and I think of all the games I've played so far this year, Call of Duty 4 has left me most impressed. Halo 3 would probably rank 2nd, followed by BioShock. Metroid Prime 3 is up there as well, and I haven't played enough of Mario Galaxy yet to make a decision on it. Super Paper Mario was pretty great, but I think it was probably the worst game in the series, though don't let that give you the idea it was bad. I preferred the more action-oriented gameplay, though. WarioWare: Smooth Moves was good, but frustrating when the controls didn't read like you wanted them to, which is a problem with the majority of Wii games that use motion-sensing controls, but it's even more frustrating when you know what to do and can't get your actions to register properly during a 5 second mini-game. As for Orange Box, I've only played Portal so far, and I'm left a little disappointed. I really feel it was way too short, and ended before it really started to challenge you. Sure, there's some hard parts, don't get me wrong, but I feel that it lacked a real final test of all you've learned. Also, I can't believe the girl in Portal got best new character and caused Orange Box to win funniest game of 2007 at Gamespot. I really didn't think she was all that amusing. Perhaps mostly because she had such a dry humor and was also difficult to understand. I was more amused by cramming as much stuff as I could into the toilet. Oh well.
Posted Jan 5, 2008 11:40 am PT
So your resolution was to play all the games that score well on Gamespot, but only if you were already interested in them to begin with? That's not much of a resolution. That's what you were probably already doing anyway. Oh, and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl was my personal favorite game of the year. It's too bad that you're too cool for a Pokemon game, though.
Posted Jan 5, 2008 11:10 pm PT
.....The BEST thing I can tell you and to cut to the quick...drop games...get a hobby...build airplanes or something this entertainment is just not for you.
Posted Jan 5, 2008 11:11 pm PT
...was it really that hard?

I managed to finish Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, all of the Orange Box (except I guess TF2, it can't really be finished), Bioshock, Halo 3, Skate, and Guitar Hero 3. I also played most of World in Conflict and Call of Duty 4, played some of Phantom Hourglass, Crysis, and Forza 2.

I also managed to do well at college and hold down a job over winter break. But I don't mean to diminish your goals/accomplishments, it's good that you're broadening your horizons and trying to experience more. That's what gaming is all about really, the experience, and it can be hard to take it all in, especially at the pace this year demanded.
Posted Jan 6, 2008 12:40 am PT
Meh. Anything 8.5 and up on Gamespot? I used to be like that. Now I play anything 85% and up on Gamerankings, more accurate.
Posted Jan 6, 2008 10:27 am PT
don't diss pokemon, it's hotness kthxbai
Posted Jan 6, 2008 12:47 pm PT
XNA is fun. You'll like it!
And Pokemon... you have to stay above those profane things as coolness and maleness!

From the GoTY nominees I only played Galaxy a bit and thought is was great. I'm not into shooters or racers. Rockband is too expensive and God of Wars seems to be too brutal for my taste. So compared to me you did really really well!
Posted Jan 6, 2008 1:44 pm PT
Pokemon used to be so much better... Fire Red and Leaf Green were great, because it was like the original games with twice the content. But diamond and pearl... just by calling a game "pearl" you lose half of you male audience because they aren't confident in their sexuality. That aside, any game where electabuzz evolves is just... what the f***...
Posted Jan 6, 2008 3:10 pm PT
I think that you're selling Mario Galaxy a little short. The further you get in, the more you realize just how stupendously brilliant the level design and gameplay is. Plus, it's gorgeous, and almost sounds better than it looks. I recommend giving it another shot. And hey, there were plenty of good games on the Wii this year. Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, and Super Paper Mario all come to mind.
Posted Jan 6, 2008 4:17 pm PT
Yeah, there were some really good Wii games this year. I thought Galaxy was pretty good, but not GOTY. The level design was impressive, but it just didn't feel like Mario 64 and DK64 did. In my opinion, GameSpy's Best of 2007 list is the most accurate out there.
Posted Jan 6, 2008 5:04 pm PT
I have the exact same perspective as you do on the pokemon series...
Posted Jan 6, 2008 7:19 pm PT
Stopped reading after you badmouthed pokemon. Grow a pair.
Posted Jan 6, 2008 7:59 pm PT
The problem with that many good games is that I buy them but never find time to play them all. Why MUST I buy them now?! I don't know... 1 thing for sure is that I don't want a GH edition of Assassin's Creed in 3 years. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy

hey you didn't play Mass Effect ??
