My Top Ten Favorite Current* Series

*On Hiatus/Airing/Returning/Status Unknown with at least two completed seasons (the true test, IMO, should actually be three seasons, but I'll only be left with a top six)

10. 24
09. Chuck
08. Damages
07. Lost
06. House
05.
Criminal Minds
04.
In Treatment
03. Dexter
02. Spooks (aka MI-5)
01.
Breaking Bad

Quick Notes: I'll probably add more of my thoughts (and links to guides) later. Apart from the usual reasons for loving a show (i.e. captivating dialogue, brilliant acting, unique and entertaining characters, interesting storylines, etc.), I noticed overlapping/similar elements among my favorites --

  • protagonist leading a double life (1, 2, 3, 9, maybe 10)
  • my love for spy stories (Alias is on my top 10 shows of all-time; one of my favorite cartoons: Spy vs. Spy -- yes, I'm that literal; although I'm not much into Bond -- James Bond, not S&M bond, not that I'm into that either!)
  • non-scifi/fantasy (except for Lost, which makes this show special for me)
  • preference for serialized over non-serialized/procedural shows
  • dark, disturbing (sometimes depressing) dramas (which makes Chuck special, and Friends too!)
  • not sure if this is relevant... no voiceovers/narration (except for Dexter and quotes from Criminal Minds)

Supernatural would've made it if their S1-S3 had the same quality as S4/S5 (reverse scenario for The Office). Medium, Big Love, Grey's Anatomy, and comedies TBBT, 30 Rock, HIMYM are somewhere in the Top 20 (I haven't really thought this through).

Among the 10, I'd say it's only In Treatment that is hard to recommend. It's just a psychotherapist and a patient (five different cases per season/one per day of the week) talking for about 20+ minutes every episode. No special effects. No non-stop action. Not much camera movement. And yet it's still one of the most engrossing TV series I've seen in years. I've actually seen both seasons twice, and I fell in love with the show even more after the second screening.

If you're into NCIS, Alias, The Unit, and 24, I highly recommend Spooks. Just don't check their IMDB listing during the course of watching the series. You'll regret it if you do. Breaking Bad is Weeds on meth (not that I've tried the stuff)! Bryan Cranston winning back-to-back Emmys (as Glenn Close did for Damages) is no fluke. All the rest, I assume you're familiar with.

Which among the ones above make it to your current top 10? Enjoy the coming weekend, everyone!

hey mack, out of those i've only seen "24", "chuck", "lost" and "breaking bad". i absolutely love the last three, but i'm afraid i've grown incredibly allergic to "24". i just couldn't bear all the torturing anymore. but the other three sure are great shows imho.

I tried to watch Spooks/MI-5. They showed it on Thursday nights from the beginning on the local Public Broadcast Station. It was pretty good, but the characters didn't appeal to me after a while. I just didn't get the chemistry. Other than that and Chuck I haven't watched anything on the top ten list. Quite a few of your next top twenty I follow though. Have a good week! Jeffery

They're some good shows! Mine would probably look something like: Bones, NCIS, How I Met Your Mother, House, Castle, Psych.. yeah I can only get six oh wells. I've never watched Chuck, Damages, In Treatment, Spooks or Breaking Bad. I'll try them out after I finish my exams.

Another thought Mack, I would put Supernatural in one of my top three spots along with Bones and Two and a Half Men currently. Interestingly enough I find that the first three seasons, especially one and two, were the best and four was the worst. Five has been better than four so far as well. Interesting! Jeffery

Hmm I really thought you were a big Grey's fan . My Top 10 of shows that are still on would be... 1. Lost (shocker!), 2. Dexter, 3. Better Off Ted, 4. Breaking Bad, 5. Chuck, 6. Glee, 7. Mad Men, 8. HIMYM, 9. 30 Rock 10. SVU (Svu's not even good anymore but I've been watching it since I was 9. It's the one show I can't dump, no matter how ridiculous it gets ). But if I made a top 10 shows of all time, only Lost would be there. All my favorite shows have ended.
Anyhow, like your list too .

Hey there I don't watch any of those so yeah. I like voiceovers/narration (as in Everwood, for example) and I certainly like fantasy (especially anything Medieval) over drama, comedy or action. Hugs

Cool list I love spy stuff too big fan of Bond though. Do you like the Bourne movies? they are the best in my opinoin.

Wow it's not easu for a show to make your top 10 list!! 24 is a fun show, I only gave up on it because I watched it on TV and fell behind like a month because I went to Russia. I honestly don't even know why I never got back into it Well I'll be watching at least 3 episodes this season (cause of Callum). Chuck is fun It's an amazing show (I don't say this nearly often enough cause I feel like people around me are always shouting it ). I watched the pilot of Damages, I don't think it is for me cause I didn't like it much & the pilot is supposed to be amazing right? Lost was another show I actually watched on TV back in the day I got a little tired of it being so hectic, confusing yet kinda slow pased and decided to watch House (which aired at the same time) instead... but I still see it as a great and highly addictive show. But once I got unaddicted I had a really hard time watching it House is awesome, I have it just under my top 10 list. It's been really awesome lately, the last episodes last season & this season. If it keeps this up it will be one of the best shows on TV! I saw the first season of Criminal Minds, again on TV. I definatly thought it was one of the better crime dramas, but was never a fan. I have never seen In Treatment... should I check it out? Dexter is one of my favorite shows too I love how much every seasons is different from any other on the show. You can never get tired of it. I've been meaning to check out Spooks, but I just have way too much to watch atm. I imagine I'll get to it in the spring or something I was bored to death during the pilot of Breaking Bad, maybe I could get into the show... I don't know but it's not worth trying. I'm sure it's a great show though cause you have great taste in TV! We all have stuff that's similar with shows on our top 10 lists. For me I 4 out of my top 5 shows are sci-fi. I too have a preference for serialized television. No comedy with the exception of HIMYM. With the exception of Dexter and Supernatural all shows on my list have on of my 6 favorite actors in them I agree that SPNs earlier seasons aren't as strong, but to me if a show is improving I consider the earlier seasons less. Someone should tell me all the reasons they love the Office, cause I honestly don't get it Grey's Anatomy might have made my top 10 list if it hadn't been going downhill since season 3. Ok so I'll watch the pilot of In Treatment, when a show is that different it's hard to know if you're gonna like it or not before you watch it. It does sound incredibly boring, but the fact that people love it when it sounds that boring should mean it's quality is even better I liked Weeds great blog, do the next one with the games soon

Hey Mack! I love Chuck and House too! My top ten would be: Bones, Chuck, Veronica Mars, Castle, House, HIMYM, TBBT, Glee, Fringe and True Blood Happy weekend!

Hey! I love Dexter, but thought that the seasons after the first ruined the feeling of it for me. Somehow Dexter was a bit more appealing to me in the first season, and his character was just perfect instead of his character nowadays which has developed. Im all for character development but I loved Dexter the way he was and in the season after the first he came across as different to me if you know what I mean you probably dont but ...! I began to love Chuck when it came out and I still do but I gave it up for other wonderful shows . Have a good week Mac !

I just got into 24 last season, so I need to go back and watch the previous seasons, I really like that show though! LOVE Damages! Can't wait for the next season! And, of course LOST is up there!

Chuck and Dexter are the only two on your list that I watch. I used to watch 24, but became disenchanted with it, so I quit watching. I don't have Showtime, so I have to wait for Dexter to come out on DVD before I can see it, but it's worth the wait. I plan to watch Spooks during the summer via Netflix. I don't want to start watching it in the middle or I'd watch it as they air it here.

Hi MackyMac, I like MI-5/Spooks, I'm looking forward to their new series Murderland with Robbie Coltrane HERE. I absolutely loved Alias. There's a bunch there that I don't care for different strokes for different folks.

Look, a bloggy. Very nice. I share the love for a lot of them even if I don't have such a list, really. I think I never saw Criminal Minds... Maybe I did, did Mandy Patinkin (sp?) star a few years ago? When that is the show, it was OK. Pretty gruesome and OK solutions, great for a procedural fix. I didn't love the characters, though, I probably didn't try hard enough. Love Spooks. And i hate it basically for the same reason, which means it would be high on my list as well. They are pretty cruel, though, very cruel. Damages season 1 is superb - just amazing. Season 2 was boring for me many times but the finale was good (I am repeating myself ) Love all the others, too, except... 24. Well, maybe, I'll change my mind this season, right? As you know, I have more of an idealistic problem with it, it is exciting and all and I used to be hooked. Also, You prefer Chuck over TBBT. Sheldon will be sooo sad. lol... Oh, and double lifes rule, I like my sci-fi and the voice-overs in Dexter are to die for. The show gains so much with those, I LOVE them. Go dark and disturbing. Oh, and Medium: I tried it but I wasn't hooked, high quality show though, I'd think...

I've only watched 2 of those, Chuck and House. I haven't watched House for a year or more, so I kind of lost interest.
Posted Oct 16, 2009 6:13 am PT
Out of those - 24, Chuck, House, and Lost would be in my top 10. Damages and Breaking Bad definitely wouldn't be. I'm torn between watching Curb Your Enthusiasm or In Treatment next after I finish off the current season of Entourage.

Nice list. I've pretty much dumped 24, Criminal Minds. I love Lost, House, Breaking Bad. Don't have HBO, but I hear IN TREATMENT is amazing.
Posted Oct 16, 2009 11:02 am PT
Some hardcore dramas there Mac!!
The ones on your list I watch are Chuck and Dexter, both of which I love. I'm just getting to the end of season 2 of Chuck and I'm loving it!!
Posted Oct 16, 2009 11:45 am PT
I only watch Chuck, 24, Dexter from your Top 10 list and they all would be in my Top 5-10 along with Supernatural.
Posted Oct 16, 2009 1:53 pm PT
I don't think I watch as much television as you do. My Current top 5 are Dexter, Degrassi, Dollhouse 90210, and Being Erica. Out of the new shows Glee is my favourite, then Mercy, Melrose Place, Eastwick, and Vampire Diaries. How I Met Your Mother, and Secret Life are 11 and 12 on the list.

Hey, buddy! How's it going? I watch Chuck and Dexter, but I don't know if they make it to my Top Ten. I haven't even considered making a list of Top Ten favourite series. I occasionally watch Criminal Minds and I've seen episodes of In Treatment. In Treatment is really good, but it felt like I was watching my mom work when I saw some episodes.

Hi Mack! YAY another blog. Do you love Breaking Bad THAT much? I wonder what it would be like if House had a double life.. hmm. I didn't know Spy vs. Spy was a show! I see random sketches of it on MadTV. She Spies is a spy show too. Also very literal. Maybe you fell in love with In Treatment because Jake Richardson was in the show. He's mine! You should watch happier shows so you wouldn't be New Mean Mack. Just kidding. House, Chuck, and TBBT would be in my Top 10. Half of characters on Grey's make the show not in my Top 10, but I'm watching less than 20 shows this year so.. hmm.. I don't know. Happy weekend! By the way, don't you think Will, from Eastwick, looks like a nerdier version of Captain Awesome?

Hey hey, Macky-G. Please don't ask why I've called you this, my brain is somewhat frazzled tonight. I've always been curious as to what your top ten would be like because you watch SO MUCH TV! I'm rather jealous actually because I have no time at all and wish I could watch this much *sulks in corner* No fair. I like your list. Except for 24. I've never seen an episode but it just has never really intrigued me enough for me to take a look. Oh, and Lost. People usually hate me for saying this but Lost bores me. What can I say, I'm a strange girl. *hugs Mack* You love Criminal Minds!! Not nearly enough people love CM. It's my number 5 too which is strange. slightly creepy but awesome. We're fated! Ever since you've started talking about Breaking Bad you've made me want to check it out. If it's your fave then it's gotta be pretty awesome. And I've never heard of Spooks before but I love all those similar shows (except 24) so now I think I'm gonna take a look. And yeah, when I first saw your list I was kinda baffled at seeing Chuck their considering the others but Chuck is pretty fantastic so good job. This also reminds me that I should post my ten current* Bye bye for nowwwwww

I like House and NCIS, but I don't like them enough to watch all the new episodes lol.
Posted Oct 17, 2009 7:00 pm PT

Hey Mack..okay I have to ask is your first name Marie lol. Lost, House, Criminal Minds and Dexter are the only ones on that list that I watch, they are all great. Im thinking I need to try out Breaking Bad though, a lot of ppl seem to love that show. I havent actually seen supernatural s4 or s5 ha but I love s1-3 so itd be on my list. Greys Anatomy would be on my list also. Anyways have a great week
Posted Oct 19, 2009 11:29 am PT
