I went to a book reading tonight by a very cool part Native Canadian author named Joseph Boyden. He was talking about his book, Through Black Spruce, and also about his first book Three Day Road. Both are books that are centred around a certain Native Cdn family. In both books there is a mention of the Windigo. Someone in the audience asked him to explain what it meant to his culture and how it could be applied to modern culture. He said (what we SN fans already know), that it is a powerful creature that feeds on human flesh and was once a man. But he also said according to his culture, a Windigo is attracted to greed and overindulgence. If you hoard or show glutteny the Windigo will come to your village. He sited a certain character in Through Black Spruce named Soleil who was a NY model who surrounded herself with beautiful people, expensive things, exposure and always wanted more. He then said that Paris Hilton represents the modern Windigo because she always wants more and feels power through overindulgence. He jokingly said over the years she gets skinnier, her hair gets brighter and her nails grow longer.

I had a good laugh about his parallel since she's going to be on SN soon.

Pretty funny coincidence!!

Today at work (school) we were doing poetry and painting. The kids had to paint a picture of wispy flowers and then in a space beside it write a poem. They're pretty young so I do this cool little trick where they have to write 4 sentences about something and then they swap sentence 1 with sentence 4, and it sounds poetic. I asked the kids to give me a topic to make a demo poem and the first kid I asked said, "Your favourite TV show!"

I was like, "um...my favourite TV show is too scary. I don't think it would make a pretty poem." I paused to try and make it work and then said, Nope. The other teacher in the room was laughing because she knows the types of shows I like (Dexter, SN). So, anyway, we ended up making a poem about 'the tallest trees' which was the next suggestion.

But, just off the top of my head, I'll make an SN one because I would have loved to been able to honour the first request.

Here goes:

(After the switch of line 1 & 4)

When will it end?

Through the pain and tragedy

Following them throughout their lives

These men who would die for each other

:

:

hmm, sounds a little cheesy. I guess it works better with nature poems.

Oh well, I tried. "The Tallest Trees" sounded better!!

Cheers,

Chris

This episode was a 10 all the way. If I could dial it to 11, I so would!! EK has outdone himself. Dean going back in time to see his parent's lives before it all began could have been done in any way, but the way this was done was fantastic.

There were countless possibilities to tell the backstory of the Winchester lives that could have led to the present situation, but....Mary as a hunter? OMG, that was so great! When she attacked Dean in the alley and showed off her fighting skills, I was like, "no way...yes, she is!". All of the actors in this episode were perfect and so talented. They all brought the Winchester family to life and there was a strong connection between Dean and his family in this episode. I loved the fact that Mary was unfazed and unafraid of the supernatural world, but wanted a normal life for her future family. The scene where she tells Dean about this was so touching and, of course, Jensen pulled it off with the perfect amount of emotion and subtlty that makes the viewer feel it even more intensely. His emotional scenes always pull at my heart. Dean spent his time in the past trying to protect his family, warn them, and most of all to kill the YED. He failed on all accounts in the end and that must have been devistating to him. Castiel then told him that he would never have been able to change the outcome because although the events leading up can be altered, the destiny will always be fulfilled. Some viewers said that this was cruel of Castiel, but I think he saw it as a necessary step to take in order to convince Dean about Sam's dark path. He saw it as an education for Dean who is set in his ways and beliefs about Sam. He needed to experience the events of the past rather than hear about them. Dean has always had unwavering devotion to Sam. He has always tried to rationalize Sam's actions and protect him. This visit to the past is what Dean needed to see in order to understand the gravety and truth of Sam's current dark state. Anyway, my hat's off to Kripke and company. When this episode finished, I was actually dizzy with the thought of the genius that has gone into this story.

I'm seeing some parallels between Castiel's relationship with Dean and Ruby's with Sam. Both are using the Winchesters for their own devices. Whether its' for good or evil, both Castiel and Ruby are masters in the art of persuasion and manipulation. They are both playing on the Winchester boys' weakenesses; Dean for family and Sam for the need to do 'the right thing' (as he believes he's doing right now thanks to Lilith's actions and Ruby's coaching). The Winchester boys are slowly being psychologically worn down and pushed into leadership roles for each side. As we know now, the fate of the Winchester family was the result of an unfortunate meeting between Mary and the YED. The present state of the family was unavoidable, but it's up to Dean to mold the future. Whew! What a daunting task.

I sincerely hope that SN continues on to season 5. What a great show and a great story. I love season 4 so far!!
