hi guys.

So, just how many sequels is too much? Apparently, for horror movies, there is no limit. On Halloween, my brother dragged me to see SAW VI...appropriate for the day, right? To put things in perspective, I haven't seen any of the SAW sequels...only the original. Oddly enough, I didn't feel I missed anything from SAW II to SAW V but I was surprisingly entertained.

Other than that, I haven't had much of a chance to play games this week...so busy at work, but I won't complain.

In the meantime, I was able to sneak in a web order for the GTA IV expansions - episodes from Liberty City. Shipment to arrive this week... I'm really looking forward to it. This along with Fallout 3 GOTY edition and Forza 3 should be enough to keep me busy for the months to come.

I would pick up Dragon Age but I've got so much to play right now that it simply doesn't make sense to add another title to my "backlogged" library of games. In addition to the ones already mentionned in this blog, I still have Dead Space, Prince of Persia, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, NFS Shift, Fable 2, Operation Flashpoint and Sacred 2: Fallen Angel to play. Not to mention more of ODST.

Anyone else have this problem?

Looking forward to playing this weekend and catching up with you guys.

Cheers,

General Luc

I stopped watching after the third Saw I think. You certainly won't miss anything if you skip one, but there's at least a connection among all the movies out.

Mmm want Fallout 3 GOTY and Sacred 2. I have a row of unplayed games, but I don't really feel like playing them. ):

to be fair, they announced after they made the first one that it would go up to 6....or 7...i dont remember

I'm not into horror movies, way too scary for me, I would have nightmares for several nights.
And you think you have a "big" backlog ?! I don't even dare to start counting....

Saw is the perfect example of a series with too many sequels. After they killed off Jigsaw, the series just went down hill if you ask me.

I can't say that I really want to see saw ( couldn't resist that one) Any hoo, I watched the first one and thought it was passable, I am still in shock that they have managed to get passed Saw II let alone VI for goodness sakes!

As for games backlog, yup I hear you on that one! I have LOADS to either start or finish off, I would list them here, but then I would be embarrassed at the amount!

I hadn't seen any of the Saw movies until Saw V, and it wasn't bad. I was surprised at the actual amount of apparent persistent story throughout the series and it actually made me interested in seeing the rest.

I've got the same problem with Dragon Age. I really want to play it and thank god I got through Dead Space, but I still need to finish playing Brutal Legend, I want to finish my second Mass Effect play-through before ME2 comes out in January, and I haven't really given any attention to Torchlight. Not to mention that I still haven't really gotten full swing into Fallout 3. So little time!

Lets get some Forza 3 on!

Does your title refer only to movies, or games as well?
Posted Nov 4, 2009 8:37 am PT
I would say that for good games theres no limit in sequels, but for horror movies like SAW or The Final Destination, that just repeat everything everytime just with new characters i think 3 is enough.

A game backlog? I wouldn't know anything about that....

@MsCortana - I can just picture you sitting on the coach with the kids late at night watching all those Saw movies.

I'm not into horror movies except for the occasional zombie flick, for some reason I love horror games but can't stand most horror movies. I still can't figure out why that is...

And heck yeah I have a game backlog, but I'm steadily chipping away at it. There's still a long ways to go though to get through my stack.

@mufujifi - Fallout 3 GOTY is simply amazing and Sacred 2 is enjoyable in its own right.
@tinoshke - do tell....
@wavey_gravey - ok but, still waiting for an XBL friend invite.

@MsCortana - I only saw the original and Saw VI.
@bowlingotter - Mass Effect 2 is already out in January??? oh for fudge sakes.....
@Gen_Warbuff - Forza 3 baby!!!!
Posted Nov 4, 2009 12:31 pm PT
@JohnnyWPSP - it's funny you mention Final Destination because I would put them in the same category as Saw...rinse, recycle, repeat.....
@grigjd3 - Sequels for both games and movies can be considered in this discussion but I just felt like complaining about movies....horror movies in particular.

I have been wondering about that... Are the Saw movies any good?
Posted Nov 4, 2009 9:06 pm PT
Ah my bad! Been sucked in to Borderlands. Will sort this morning (You know my tag right?)

@DMLSLAT - I thought the original Saw was a fresh idea for a horror movie. Saw VI wasn't bad....wasn't great either.

@wavey_gravey - friend request accepted! Thank you!

Cool. I think I'll try the first couple and decide if I like them enough to keep watching.

Btw, how about Superman movies? Praying DC's new set-up with Warner is going to turn out well...

And about sequels... There's no specific number until they run out of story, or they just start sucking. For example: a story about a superhero will probably not run out of story for a long time because they have lots of villains and there's character development going on simultaneously. It's fine to make sequels, right up until a movie like Superman III (reboots are fine, but rarely turn out well), Batman Forever, etc. There was more story after Eragon but since the first movie failed so miserably they couldn't make one. And as for Resident Evil movies... STOP RUINING THE NAME OF THE SERIES! All of those movies suck!

...You get my point.

@DMLSLAT - I'm really hoping they can do something great with the next Superman movie. We'll wait and see....

I wish they'd just restarted with Returns, because it had the burden of being a first movie and a sequel at the same time, since a lot of people haven't seen the old ones, which made it really long, really big on talking, and not worthy of Superman (although that plane scene was awesome!). That, and the plot had too much romance, too little action, too much Clark, and too little Superman.

Plus, Superman being a peeping Tom? Having a kid (who couldn't possibly have had superpowers based on the first two movies anyway)? Giving Lois a husband? No. I liked a lot of it and how it paid homage to the first movie and some of the comics (and Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey were great), but it just had a bloated plot that didn't work as a superhero movie.

I vote they just start over, do an origin story properly, quit trying to copy the past, and give Lex a rest. He's a great villain, but he's best being in the background pulling the strings, because he can't give Superman much physical trouble without Kryptonite, which just gets old if there's too much of it. Besides, he's been used in like four of the five movies. And quit with the real estate! Set up Lex Corp, make him an evil corporate ruler with a ton of power, not a guy ripping money off old ladies, if he must be there. Put in Brainiac or Darkseid, someone Superman can have an epic battle with.

Maybe I'm just nerding out here. But what are your thoughts?
Posted Nov 6, 2009 10:55 pm PT
@DMLSLAT - alright...let me start nerding out here also. I really liked Superman Returns because it paid homage to the original Chris Reeve movie however, that is also why it didn't do well commercially.

I agree that they should start over but eventually, I'd love to see someone do a movie on the "Death and Return of Superman".
Posted Nov 7, 2009 5:34 pm PT
I like the idea of the death and return story, since after all, The Death of Superman is the bestselling graphic novel ever (!) but I think they should establish the character before they try to tug on the heartstrings with his death. A lot of people don't appreciate him right now because he seems god-like and no one can imagine what could give him a threat, so seeing Brainiac, Parasite, Darkseid, Mongul, someone like that facing him first would be pretty cool to me.
