I have never really been much of a rpg guy. It is not that I didn't like them, but I just thought it would take too much time and energy to get into them. My ps3 had been sitting around collecting dust for a few months and I felt like I needed to finally buy another ps3 game to put an end to that situation. I got a 25 dollar gift card to gamestop and had a very hard time deciding which new ps3 game I should get because I know I will not be buying another for a very long time. It was between Red Faction: Guerilla, Valkyria Chronicles, and Demon's Souls. I could not decide at all between the 3 so I just went into the shamestop to pick on the spot.
Crapstop made my decision easy because for Red Faction: Guerilla the only copies they had were the "new" ones where they violated the game by wripping off the plastic and taking out the discs. I refuse to buy "new" games.
The only copy of Valkyria Chronicles they had (was there the week before) was now gone too.
So, they had sealed copies of Demon's Souls and I picked one up. Although, I had to ask them for a sealed copy. The guy went and found one and then said "How come you want it sealed? Do you plan on never playing it? This really pissed me off. I said "well if I am going to pay full price for a game I want a copy that isn't already opened by your employees."

Anyways, I started playing it last night and played it about 6 hours last night and 4 hours so far today. It is very addicting and well worth the purchase in my opinion. I am a RPG noob, but even this games difficulty does not put me off very much. I think people greatly exaggerated the difficulty of this game. This game is about as hard as a good NES game, meaning there is lots of trial and error/pattern memorization. But, the difficulty is not cheap. When you die it is because you messed up.
I am still suprised I am liking a RPG so much haha.

It's a truly unique game and I haven't found it difficult, per se. You just have to get used to it's structure and realize run through after run through of the same level is the essence of the game, itself and not "punishment" for failure.
If you get impatient and rush things, you're going to get spanked. If you take enemies you killed easily in past attempts for granted, you're going to get spanked. If you're tired and making mistakes or your eyes are glazing over, turn it off and walk away, because you're going to get spanked (and maybe throw a controller)... but it ain't the game's fault.
I haven't played it enough, really, but when I get a block of time (and Dragon Rising out of my system) I'm going to settle in and savor this one.
@eggmcmuff I am really really enjoying this game. Yea, you will run through the same areas countless times, but that makes your new discoveries and victories stand out that much more. I think the amount of challenge in this game is just right.
@Drummer27384 Yea, if someone like me who hasn't played many rpgs can get into it I am sure you will be able to.
@Hizang I have played like 3 rpgs ever haha. Zelda: links awakening on gb, pokemon blue, and pokemon yellow
@tyzwain Well if you are used to challenging games (NES game level) then I would say yes this game is easy to get into. Well, it took me an hour or 2 to really understand a lot of the basics, but the game sucks you in so well that it doesn't matter if you are confused at first.
Good to hear you're getting your money's worth though!
I'm guessing I had somewhat of an influence with this latest decision?
I do recommend getting back to picking up a copy of VC once you get a chance as it's quite the gem of a game. Anyways, the main thing about the 'difficulty' of DS that people complain about stems from how the game plays a lot like a solid action game with attack timing and range/spacing. Most people that are primarily into just RPGs aren't used to playing a real action game since most action-rpgs up to this point are button mash fests; this really catches them off guard.
Well, I guess I'll BS with you later. Let me know if you need any help/tips for any part of the game. my psn is the same as my name here.
@nate1222 I tried the uncharted 2 demo and it seemed good, but not run out and spend 60 dollars good.
@johnsteed7 Yea, it is pretty refreshing in that regard. @cornerback3 This is scaring me a bit. I am really really enjoying this rpg. It is making me think about starting the huge process of going back and playing the good older ones.
@jt4mtb Sorta, I just kept hearing from lots of people that usually know what they are talking about say this game is awesome. I definitely will still pick up valkyaria chronicles in the future. To be honest, I was dissapointed I didn't end up carrying that game away at first haha. But, after playing demon's souls I am very happy with how things turned out.
I sent you a friend request on psn.
But i strongly disagree with you that the deaths are not "cheap". To me, trial and error is one thing, but in DS you just randomly come accross too many things/enemies that can kill you in one hit that it cheapens the feel a bit. You're walking through a cassle one minute, and a dragon just shows up and hits you with fire killing you in one single instance. Not really fun or fair to me personally. Also, in later levels there is quite alot of narrow planks and such to balance across for a game with no jump or grab feature. Quite frustrating, and cheap. Also, I have come across a few random camera and gameworld glitches that can be frustrating.
I have heard so much about Demon's Souls but I will have to put off the purchase of a PS3 for awhile. *sigh*
@TheKungFool I am only in the 2nd level so can't comment on that walking on ledges part. As for things suprising you for one hit kills, I do not find it cheap the way the game implements this. I very rarely am killed by traps like that on my first time. You just have to move very slowly and cautiously thorughout new areas. Like on that bridge part where the dragon comes and shoots fire. I did not get killed. I heard unusual noises, so figured something was ahead and moved very slowly. Then I saw the pattern in which the dragon would attack the bridge and ran across during the gaps in the attack.
@auron11022 Hmm, yea good point. Maybe that is why I am enjoying this so much since I like action games.
@ScreamDream I would dare say this game is worth paying 60 dollars for. I rarely ever think that a game is worth that price.
@Valek1394 I have probably played this about 12 hours now and still am just as addicted to it as before. I also am curious about brutal legend, but wont be buying that for a long time once it has a big price drop.
@polsci1503 Yea, definitely a must- buy.
@bugbag You will probably enjoy this game too then.
@syler4815162342 thanks
@polarmanda Hope it does. If it doesn't come out there you could probably import the us version since most ps3 games arent region locked.
