GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

Well I rushed out yesterday and picked up the two big October 13 releases - Brutal Legend and Uncharted 2. Some early impressions --

Uncharted 2 is quite good. So far, it lives up to the hype. I find myself battling with the camera a little bit but nothing too major. This seems to be a game that has taken an extra effort to be like a Hollywood movie, not just in style but in quality. Many games try to be cinematic, but it's very rare for a game's cinematic elements to actually feel like they are on a level of quality with an enjoyable movie. This game so far does that. It grabs you right away and gets you wrapped up in its story, and it does a good job of creating the same type of archeological mystique around mysterious artifacts that the Indiana Jones movies do. (Well, the first three Indiana Jones movies anyway)

I haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but assuming it's as good as everyone says, I'd say this game is destined to be a big hit, a big seller, and a big contender for game of the year.

Brutal Legend, on the other hand, is going to be a polarizing game. Some are going to love it, some are going to hate it. Whereas Uncharted 2 seems like a game that is going to have a very wide appeal, Brutal Legend's appeal is a lot more narrow. In fact, sometimes it feels like it is targeted directly at heavy metal fans only, and I do think you need to at least be familiar with heavy metal to fully appreciate the game and "get" all its references. I liked metal a lot when I was younger, so I crack a smile or laugh at the game's tributes to the genre. But others aren't going to care.

The gameplay so far is okay, but I'm thinking that the main appeal of this game won't be the gameplay but the atmosphere, dialogue, cameos (one aging metal star in particular makes a great cameo as a vendor... I won't spoil it, but he's surprisingly good as a voice actor), etc. I'm getting a kick out of it so far, but I think the meta scores for this game are going to be indicative of the type of reaction it gets among fans -- some are going to absolutely love it, others will be disappointed.

I like both games so far though, and if Demon's Souls is as good as everyone says (mine's coming in the mail this week hopefully), then Rocktober has definitely been rockin' so far with games. Can't wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.

Granted, I'm not your normal gamer, but the only game that had any interest from me this month was Demon's Souls, and it's quite good.

Glad you're enjoying BL and UC2 so far!

My copy of Uncharted 2 is in the mail so I'll have to be a bit more patient. But I'm already certain that I'll enjoy this game, as much as I enjoyed the first one.
I'm still having doubts whether to buy Brutal Legend now or later when the price has dropped. I already bought Demon's Souls as well and the release of Dragon Age and AC II is coming closer and closer, so I would like to purchase those games first.

Have big fun with your new games !!

You did so well buying Uncharted 2, then failed getting a game with Jack Black. I am proud and yet ashamed And yes Demons Souls is amazing.

@3KindgomsRandy: I'm looking more and more forward to playing it the more I hear about it. I was originally planning on waiting until after Dragon Age and MW2 to play it but I might have to make those two wait instead

@tinoshke: If I had to do Brutal Legend over I guess I'd probably wait for a price drop. I do like it and I'm not unhappy I got it for full price, but at the same time, there's plenty of other stuff out right now to play and after playing it, I'm not sure it's the type of "run right out and get it" title that I thought it'd be.

@AzelKosMos: I guess I don't have any opinion one way or another on Jack Black, but he's actually a little dull in Brutal Legend, at least so far. I like the character though. If I did hate Jack Black though, the Tim Schafer factor would have won out anyway

If you like it then cool. Though i hate Jack Black so much i couldn't care less if the game was made of gold mixed with Kate Beckinsale, i wouldn't touch it

mmm Uncharted 2. I will be receiving mine today and then not going to class for the next few days (shh, don't tell anyone). I know who the rock star vendor is!!!

@ms_hijikata: So far I'd say that it is a game worth skipping class for! Then again, I'd skip class simply because I didn't feel like walking up a hill that day, so I'm not the best one to listen to
