I myself have Nvidia and it's fantastic! Now I don't need to see the system requirements while buying games 'coz it supports max n of games' graphics!
I think if you can afford it U should get Nvidia!

If you are able to, get an ATI Radeon 9600. Nvidia GeForce is a good pick too.

ATI is the way to go. Everyone I've talked to that's had an nVidia hated it or had problems with it.

I really don't find either brand that much better than the other--I go purely on a card-by-card basis, judging on pure performance.
My biggest tip: Pricewatch.com and Bizrate.com If you look hard enough, especially on these 2 sites, you can literally get stuff like graphics cards marked down nearly 50%. They are amazing...which is the only reason I'm running an All-in-Wonder 9600 right now. But my brother's 6600GT smokes my card.
And ALWAYS get a Pro or XT/GT model of a card if possible. You will get much better overall bang for your buck by getting these versions, like a 9600 Pro or a 6600 GT than a 9600 or 6600. 20 or 30 more bucks, maybe a bit more, but the performance jump is well worth it.
The other secret: tomshardware.com. It has benchmarks like crazy.

Here are some links to help you:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/15/graphics_card_buyers_guide_2006_part3/page44.html
http://www.bizrate.com/graphicscards/products__keyword--graphics%20card__sort--5__start--440.html
From looking through those places, I've basically narrowed it down to two for you--the Radeon X1600 XT or the NvIdia 6800 XT. The X1600 is a bit cheaper, but a tiny bit lower on performance. You might have to go a tad over-budget to get the 6800 XT, though. Both will, as is shown in the benchmarks, FEAR at MAX SETTINGS at 1024 x 768 at the acceptable rate of about 30 FPS. This means that you just have to crank a few settings down and it'll be purring along.
My personal recommendation here is the X1600. You can get it pretty cheap if you use the sites I listed above...these small internet dealers come through and can have truly excellent deals. Just check the feedback ratings and you should be fine. I've only had one bad experience with an online dealer, and that was one with a bad feedback rating.
So, after browsing a bit, I came across these two as possibly your best hits:

http://www.bizrate.com/graphicscards/pid391168927/compareprices__keyword--6800.html
So check those out and report back...I've researched graphics cards to death, so I'm pretty good at this stuff by now.

do some research and get what is best suited for your needs and gaming. I personally Have an ATI card and it works fine for me, but my computer is quite a different set up from yours. You compare and shop and I'm sure you'll get something that'll fit your budget and work fine.
