It amazes me that all Nintendo has to do is show a teaser image of the new Zelda game and speculation will begin and of course, with this comes basially everyone's reasoning as to what could happen to make it suck and the more I listen to whiny Nintendo fans complain about what's wrong with each new Mario, Zelda, Pokemon installment the more I realize why Nintendo left the hardcores behind for the less whiny casual crowd. Let me explain.

First there are the fans who refuse the acknowledge any Zelda game after A Link to the Past.

People hated Majora's Mask because it featured a young Link and did follow the standard format.

People hated Wind Waker because it was "cartoony" and had sailing.

People THEN turned around and hated Twilight Princess becuase it was too much like Ocarina.

People hated Phantom Hourglass because it had sailing again and the Ocean King Temple was a pain (ok I agree with the later).

People already hate on Spirit Tracks because WHAAAA! Link's on a train. And of course there are those already condemming it if it doesn't have Ganondorf (never mind that he's stuck at the bottom of the sea with a sword stuck in his forehead).

And finally there are those condemming the new Wii Zelda because it's going to use motion controls and possibly the new demo mode. And I'm sure as more is revealed, we'll find something else to hate and discuss as to why no Zelda game will ever be greater than Ocarina of Time.

Honestly at times I get why Nintendo is tired of appeasing the hardcore because as Yahtzee pointed out "fans are clingy, complaining dipsh--s who will never EVER be greatful no matter how many concessons you make. The minute you shut our their shrill tremulous cries, the better off you are." Fan complained about how SSBB was either too similar/too different from Melee. People complained about Mario flying through space. We hated when Fox jumped out of his plane and adventured on foot with a magic staff. We hated when Metroidevolved into an FPS but now we hate how Other M is allowing Samus to talk and have a backstory.

I know I'm rambling but the point of many of my blogs is to show a mirror back at the game community and how we're like a bunch of spoiled children who are never satisfied. We want our favorite franchises to grow and change but then hate when it's too different. We want new ways to play but shun new control schemes. We wanted our parents to accept our gaming but now hate that they're buying "shovelware."

Really if any of you have some idea of what a great Zelda game SHOULD be, I'd greatly like to hear it because I'm sure I'd hear several conflicting ideas (have Link talk. Link shouldnt talk, etc.) But what if say, they really changed up the series. Used the wolf form from Twilight Princess, but kept him in wolf form the entire game. Not being able to use his sword, Link would have to use magic spells. Maybe set it in a different location based on old world Japan, but then you wouldn't have Zelda....you'd have Okami! Which you didn't buy!! (note: if you did buy Okami, please disreguard the last line.)

In short the new Wii Zelda is going to suck because it's not Ocarina of Time.

I see your points there. Although to tell you the truth, I'm not hyping Spirit Tracks that much, but I am hoping it's at least good.

I think, every Zelda game is great (I only played 5), if the fans are just whiny kids that want to complain all the time, leave them alone and see how they die by depression of never finding a "good" zelda game

wait, people hated wind wker?
i love hourglass and have to get tracks

That was hilarious.

You're completely right, but that's the nature of the internet. Why is it that whichever gaming news outlet you go to, the Wii is derided and ignored, yet continues to sell as much as the other two combined? Or why is it that in this Greatest Hero thing Gamespot has going on, Mario, Link, Donkey Kong and Samus have all managed to push forward, while mascots of the other platforms haven't had the same luck? I think it's because there are a lot of gamers out there who don't think it's wise to be wasting their time on message boards arguing the pros and cons of an upcoming game. Instead they just play games. And I'd like to think Nintendo knows that. They know Ocarina wasn't the only quality Zelda, and they know what's best for the series. The whiny, unplacatable loudmouths on gaming sites are just a portion of the market. The rest of the people buying Zelda Wii will be headed into it with a much more open mind. And I'd hope that's who Nintendo makes their games for. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what Link's train has to offer.

It's true, and it shouldn't be. People should simply remember that if things always stayed the same, it would get boring! How can some people call themselves fans when they always want to complain?

The only Zelda game I ever did play was Zelda : A link to the past... and after that... I just lost interest in the series!
Posted Sep 20, 2009 11:33 am PT
Not me, I learned from others, though I agree with you.

You make perfect sense. But it isnt just Nintendo fans. Its fans in general. No one will ever be happy with what they have. And I admit I am one of those people. Its just how humans have done things for so long it is hard to suddenly stop and change.

You're pretty right, except for Wind Waker. I haven't met anyone yet who said they didn't like Wind Waker. Anyways, I'm one of those people who doesn't mind the new...As long as it works. For example, Fox running around with a staff would've been fine, but the game was lame, that's all there is to it. If this new Zelda title has WM+ controls, fine. But if they make the game lame, yeah I'm gonna be ticked.

@nintendo-naut: I hate Wind Waker... seriously...

@kbaily: just ignore the whiny fans...

@Thiago26792

I stand corrected...

It's hard to not admire the fact that you're never shy about telling the video game community a piece of your mind, and in cases like this blog entry, you're being entirely truthful about it all. While I have to admit that I'm not as excited about the upcoming Zelda Wii game myself, I do agree that people are speculating too much about it to the point where it looks like they're trying to find ways to hate it. Sadly, the nature of the video game community is now one where it's apparently much easier to rant and hate something than it is to embrace and accept it, and this is definitely obviously when it concerns anything Nintendo-related.

Just look at New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2's receptions so far. Despite the prequels of both of these games showing how strong the Mario brand is after all of these years, including Galaxy being the second best ranked game ever, NSMBW is being regarded as a DS port and Galaxy 2 is being looked at as nothing more than an expansion pack. And yet, in the past couple of gens, people wanted Nintendo to put more Mario platformers on their systems. Hypocrisy much? And I agree with your statement that perhaps it's been Nintendo look for a crowd that can actually enjoy its products, instead of trying to please a smaller group of people who always complain and eventually leave altogether.

Wow, amazing how every small detail can make someone complain.
Posted Sep 20, 2009 1:09 pm PT
I agree with you.
Posted Sep 20, 2009 1:41 pm PT
I like to think of it like the dynastic cycle.Only the whole "Prosperity" phase lasts a good 3 minutes. As Croshaw noted, dissent is pretty much a given towards any new thing.

Once again kbaily, I have to agree with you. Too many Nintendo "fans" spend more time complaining about literally everything Nintendo does than they do embracing the direction they've gone. It makes you wonder why they even bother supporting Nintendo anymore.

Unlike those so called "fans", I'm looking foward to the new Wii Zelda.

Well see I can't think of anyone that hates all Zeldas, there seem to be fans that liked TP and like similar Zeldas so they cry about trains. And there are those like me that disliked TP because I like change so I am excited for ST. Zelda fans are typically 2 types and appeasing them both is almost impossible so that's why people always complain, they appease 1 at a time.
Posted Sep 20, 2009 2:40 pm PT
I bought Okami...
Posted Sep 20, 2009 3:30 pm PT
Wow. You're completely right. But if I had to make a list of my favorite Gamecube games, Starfox Adventures would definitely crack top 10. I also think that Zelda needs to branch out. Take away Zelda and Mario's new gimmicks, and they're just Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of time with better graphics.
Posted Sep 20, 2009 3:50 pm PT
This actually surprises me, I'm not a Zelda fan but aren't all the games supposed to be really good? I would never think that Zelda fans would have something to complain about.
Posted Sep 20, 2009 5:08 pm PT
Don't mind the people who don't like them, Nintendo releases a Zelda game once in a while and people buy them, and who likes them good for them but for the ones that don't then don't buy another one but don't complain.

And your point's really good though when I got Star Fox Adventures like 4 years ago I liked it and it was the 1st StarFox I played, I was so little that I didn't know that like 2 or 3 StarFox games were released before but later when I played Assault I didn't liked it coz' I had experienced only the Fox-traveling-on-foot-with-magic-staff game anyways it was pretty cool for me and I would like it as a New Play Control some day.

I'm starting to think Zelda fans are just too whiny about what they want in their games.

Personally I loved Wind Waker, and most of the other Zelda games I played. Partly cause I've never touched ALttP or Ocarina before
Posted Sep 20, 2009 6:18 pm PT
you are right in every way. its like saying, "i want a new 2d sonic game will be awesome,"
and then they say, "aw this 2d sonic games gunna suck,"
some people cant make up there minds
soo i just play pireod
Posted Sep 20, 2009 6:36 pm PT
@xdude85: They are good, and most people think so, but they always seem to find one thing they don't like and then they make sure EVERYONE knows it lol.

Spirit Tracks and Zelda Wii will be awesome!!

"We hated when Metroidevolved into an FPS."

So did I! Thgough I loved it when it was a FPA.

Futuristic Zelda ftw!
Posted Sep 20, 2009 7:41 pm PT
I never heard people hate WW before.
Posted Sep 20, 2009 10:41 pm PT
Isn't that the case with every fanbase? Hell, look at Halo's fanbase (don't kill me halo fanboys, I enjoyed all 3 of them). All the ODST talk makes them the most memorable right now.

"Halo 2 sucks because it's story is terrible compared to the 1st one!"

"Halo 2 is a massive improvement over Halo: CE due to its superior multiplayer!"

"What, they removed the scope on the pistol? RAAAAGE"

"Playing as an Elite? That's DUMB."

"Dual wielding? DUMB."

"The sword is overpowered!"

"Halo 3 and they STILL haven't brought back the pistol!?"

"Playing as an ODST? Great, Bungie just loves wh*ring out the Halo franchise."

"What, they brought back the scope pistol? RAAAAGE."

My point is, fans will always act like that, regardless of the game. Whether it's Sega fans' outright rejection of anything Sonic-related after the Genesis, or GTA fans hating GTAIV for being "too serious", or Mario fans loathing each and every single sports spin-off (even if one turns out to be half-decent), as long as there are dedicated fans of a series, there will always be fans dedicated to criticizing said series.

All very good points.
Posted Sep 21, 2009 8:45 am PT
I think fans of any franchise are never happy, especially Zelda fans, they love the games but oly choose to air their opinions on the bits they didn't like rather than the multitude of things they thought were great
Posted Sep 21, 2009 9:49 am PT
I really don't see this much complaining from Nintendo fans, it's the Sonic fans I hear this come from...

"OMG!!! SONIC HAS A SWORD!!! FAIL!!!"

"SONIC'S FLIRTING WITH A PRINCESS ZOMG!!!"

"OH NO SHADOW HAS A GUN!!!"

"SONIC'S RIDING A AIR BOARDS!!! HELL NO!!!"

"SONIC'S A WEREHOG AND HE'S SLOW!!! NOOOO!!!!"

That's full of fail, these comments made by Sega fans are what's more full of fail. SO what if Metroid became a FPS, so what if Samus talks and has a backstory. That's great!

Honestly, I've seen worse from Sega fans!

Zelda is an excellent series. Easily one of the best EVER. When a new game gets announced, expectations are high. And high expectations are a precursor to disappointment.
Posted Sep 21, 2009 1:39 pm PT
I feel like I have missed the boat here. I have never, ever met a person who hated wind waker, sure i've met a lot of confused folk who didnt understand the grahics, but after they learned the change wasnt for good they couldn't care less. As for TP, I didnt like it. But quality and opinion are two different things, so while I personally dislike the game, I do admit it's a future classic.
Posted Sep 22, 2009 11:45 am PT
"People hated Twilight Princess?"

That's what I said when I read this the first time, which I did with an other fellow fanboy where he responded : "Yeah, Ganon was such a wuss at the end." To which I said : "Wasn't he a bigger one in OOT that you praise so much? Hey, name ANY hard boss in the Zelda series."

Then he got quiet for a while and then he started waving his arms and make pig noises... Not really but whatever he said I didn't take interest in any longer.

Actually, Zelda only needs one thing to be good in my book.

Give me a darn sword within the first minute of playing the game and I'm happy.

The real reason people don't like TP is that it takes forever to get your sword and shield so you can actually fight monsters, which is what Zelda is about. Similarly, Wind Waker takes hours before you can freely explore and fight monsters.

Zelda is about fighting monsters and exploring at your own pace. The game does not really need to have a million npcs with their own back-stories and side-quests that reward you with...another heart container...

Fanboys do complain a lot, but every so often Nintendo does lose touch of what makes their games great.

Just a thought.

I find it funny, I haven't run into anyone here yet that hates any of those Zelda games you mentioned. They find some of them to be minor annoyances but in short they always say "This Zelda game is awesome". For better or for worse, I'm glad I don't have to read about how even good games are supposedly "crappy" from some random users.

We'll have to see exactly what happens... since it's Zelda, I'm sure the new features they'll add will be worked on heavily and come out pretty nice. I recall the wolf from TP being very fun to use.
