I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is and I think fans of Richard Matheson will be pleased. If you want dramatic sci-fi this film is worth a look. If you were expecting an action film, it's probably better if you skip this one. Like the original story, it's no-frills look into what it would be like to actually be alone for so long with almost no hope of future companionship - the loneliness is communicated very well. I was also impressed with Will Smith. He acts alone through most of the film and he does a great job. I think most of the mediocre reviews stem from the fact that the movie was mis-marketed as an action/adventure when it is actually more of a drama. I also understand why people think aspects of the movie are cliche, but the film is actually pretty faithful to the original 1954 story - so I personally think it only seems cliche because older stories like this one actually have been copied so many times.

This movie is both a parody and an homage to cop movies, buddy movies, and big-budget action movies. Whether you love these types of movies, hate them, or dismiss them entirely as 'Hollywood dreck', you'll probably appreciate the humour in Hot Fuzz. Even if you love the big-budget Hollywood cop film, this movie never becomes mean-spirited in its jokes. An intelligent comedy that relies on its own script, rather than insulting the scripts of other films.
One of the things I really liked was how most (if not all) of the minor, passing details come full circle and pay off eventually. Excellent writing and excellent attention to detail. In a word: Flawless.

So much wasted potential, including near-perfect casting. But if you are a fan of the books, you will probably be very disappointed. I think the first half of the movie is good-to-great - relatively faithful to the story and any changes are acceptable. After around the half-way point, it all just becomes a muddled mess and resembles neither the Hitchhiker books or a decent storyline. Read (or re-read) the books instead.

A remote location and a shape-shifting monster set the stage for a truly frightening story in which the characters begin to turn on each other in fear and mistrust.
The pre-CGI effects are near flawless - truly realistic and grotesque. I doubt computers could do it any better.

The majority of major horror flicks from this era were slasher-related, so this movie stood out when it was released. I saw this movie as a child and it is still one of my favourites.
A strong story and solid acting make this movie what it is. Truly frightening dream sequences and great suspense scenes sprinkled with large helpings of dry, British wit. And the pre-CGI special effects are realitic and still hold their own against modern computerized effects. Also, David Naughton is very believable as the main character - especially in expressing the guilt, confusion and disbelief of his situation.

This is a wonderful movie, although hard to categorize. Part horror, part comedy, part tragedy, part social commentary. It's a story about two elderly men who fight to save the world while most people dismiss them as useless, and about being a hero in a world where that heroism will never be recognized or acknowledged. But the movie is also just great fun as an eccentric comedy-horror - an unbelievable story told in a believable and oddly touching way.
