I have been gone for several days because of my work situation. I have been going in at 6:00 AM and working to 5:00 PM with no lunches. That is the easy part. The hard part to me is that I have to drive almost an hour and a half to get there. I lose 3 hours per day on the road.

As difficult as it has been lately, I found myself in a very challenging situation today. I have six employee's who work for me. They have also been having a stressful time even to the point that the best of the group had to take a couple of days off in order to get himself together. 3 months ago I brought this girl in through a temp agency because I had a bad experience with the previous employee that I hired. She is not making a lot of money, but her 90 days ends on Monday. I am certain that she is expecting a raise. I talked with my boss today who is the president of our division and he told me that we would hire her, but at the same rate that she is making now. She will now have really good benefits, which she has not had, however her pay rate is going to stay the same until she goes through 90 days probation actually working for the company.

Even though I disagree, I am going to have to break the news that she is not getting a raise but yet still expect her to work just as hard as she has been. Are the benefits worth not getting a raise? Is the company doing her wrong in this situation? How would you respond if it were you? Do I care too much to be a good manager?

Sometimes the most labor intensive jobs are the ones that pay the least. Paying more does not guarantee a increase in motivation. That place puts the "grind" in corporate grind.

I think if you approach her with you're not getting a raise but you'll now have benifits would be good. In this day and age a job with benifits is good. Benefits might be a motivator to keep her at the work level she's at now. Is there a chance that she can work up to a raise after the next 90 days? Keep on because you can't let it get to you. I wish I had caring bosses bottom line is all that counts.

You do care a lot, but sometimes caring is a part of the job. If I were her I probably would stick around another 90 days and hope that things get better after that.

See, the problem is, you don't seem like you're being given enough due as manager. If you're in charge to the point where you have to tell people they aren't getting a raise, then your opinion on whether or not they deserve one should be weighted slightly with the higher-ups.

That's my 2 cents anyway. Hopefully things will work out for you, as well as for this employee.

I'm sorry to hear that things are so difficult with work. I understand the drive as I used to make a similar one. I felt the same as you do about that part.

It's admirable that you have the desire to be a good manager. Many managers do care. I agree with what others have said. Explain the situation to her and let her decide.

I can't answer the question about how I would react to being in the same situation as this woman, because I am not. It would depend on how much I liked working at the company and how much I needed the job. I stayed at my previous job until I was laid off even though I hated it there. I needed the job. I did my best there because that's how I am. I take pride in my work.

I know you don't know me. I came here through Danasdude. Good luck with your situation. I hope things improve a bit so you are able to take lunches.

Sorry to hear that work has been so rough! I can really relate. I work an hour away, but with traffic, it has taken me up to 3 hours to get home! After finding a route with less traffic jams, I now get home in an hour, but it used to take me an hour and a half to get home!
