I've been watching The Simpsons on TV since day one, which means all of my adult life. As a cultural touchstone and phenomenon, the movie had an impossible standard to live up to. Fortunately it acquits itself very well. It's not the funniest 90 minutes in Simpsons history but it absolutely does what it needs to do. All but the most jaded fan will find plenty to laugh about, and all but the most casual fan will find a few nitpicky things to complain about. Don't worry, though, in the end, the Simpsons Movie lives up to expectations well, and gives you plenty more classic lines to quote with your friends. Go see it!

After Fargo became a huge commercial and critical hit for the Coen Brothers, they teamed up with uber-producer Joel Silver (The Matrix), who gave them tons of money and a carte blanche to do whatever they wanted. I don't think anybody expected them to crank out a picture like this. Imagine a screwball comedy in the Preston Sturges style with Terry Gilliam as the Art Director and you're halfway there. Throw in some amazing performances from Tim Robbins (as a slack jawed yokel/idiot savant), Jennifer Jason-Leigh (chewing, swallowing, and spitting out the scenery with a dead on Katharine Hepburn imitation), and Paul Newman (cigar chomping businessman parody), and you've got yourself the recipe for one poorly received and sadly misunderstood film. There's a cult audience for this film who love it dearly, but it nearly killed the Coens' career.

One of the greatest films ever made, this is a dazzling tour de force of visual imagery, and paranoid Kafka-esque fantasy. A sweeping swashbuckling romance played out against a backdrop of totalitarian oppression, German impressionist architecture, and ducts. I've seen this film about 50 times and it still enthralls me. The "making of" story is almost as interesting as the film itself, and the bureaucratic nonsense that director Terry Gilliam became mired in mirrors the film's subject matter in an uncanny way! If you have eyeballs, you owe it to them to see this movie at least 3 times.
