GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

I just thought I'd add to the list of Gamespot bloggers talking about how great Uncharted 2 is. I really enjoyed the first game and part 2 is more of the same, but with better designed levels. That doesn't sound like much, but giving you the option to use the stealth kill and hand to hand combat abilities that were all but useless in the first game really does a good job of varying the combat and keeping it from getting stale.

There are plenty of action set piece moments in the game, and they stayed with me long after I finished them. Things like fighting your way through a moving train, trying to survive an attack from a helicopter with nothing but pistol, or escaping from a collapsing building were so much fun I wanted to play through them again as soon as I finished the game. Thankfully, you have the option to play through any chapter again after you've completed it.

All the talk in the bonus features about putting you in an "interactive action movie" got me thinking….. when was the last time I enjoyed a non-interactive action movie? The Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series fizzled out years ago. Attempted action movie revivals like Live Free or Die Hard and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull were travesties. Even the Matrix is past its tenth birthday. With crap like Transformers and G.I. Joe dominating the box office it's easy to see why I hardly ever go to the movies anymore. Video games really have become my go to medium to see stuff blow up real good.

Though it's not quite in Uncharted 2s league, I've also been enjoying Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood lately. It's a first person shooter set in the old west. With all the FPS games out there, the setting of BiB really helps it to stand out. The barren deserts, lush forests, and seedy border towns all look great and help to distinguish the game from the drab, grey war-torn setting we're used to in most modern FPS games. The selection of pistols and rifles is also a nice change of pace from the norm. You can select from one of two playable characters in most of the levels, the agile Thomas, who can use silent weapons like knives and arrows and climb up to high ledges and walkways, or the tough Ray, who has more health and can break through locked doors, duel wield pisols, and has dynamite that he can throw like a grenade. They play so differently from each other that it was fun going through the campaign a second time with the other character.

I'm sure Bound In Blood won't turn out to be as polished or intense as Modern Warfare 2, but if you're looking for something a little different from the submachine guns and sniper rifles in most FPS games, I'd give the game a shot, especially now that the price has dropped.

So now I've got a tough choice to make. I got Dragon Age in the mail yesterday, but I've also taken advantage of amazon.com's $20 gift card deal and pre-ordered Modern Warfare 2. Do I start on Dragon Age now, knowing that it will take me weeks if not months to finish? Or do I wait for MW2 to ship next week?

It's tough being a gamer in fall….

I'd give Dragon Age Origins a shot. I just started it today and I've played it for something like 8 hours -- and this is coming from somebody who seldom plays video games to begin with. It's addictive and engrossing. It's a forty hour game, or so I've heard, and if you find yourself as sucked-in as I've found myself, I doubt it'll take you months/even weeks.

@bluej33 - "somebody who seldom plays video games"? What are you doing on this site?
Posted Nov 5, 2009 8:29 pm PT
But..but...It CAN'T be awesome! I don't have enough money to buy all these damn games this year! Plus I got back into Magic: The Gathering, and I'm getting into the dark, money-sucking world of tabletop miniature gaming in the form of Warmachine. I think I should do what any American would: Sue video game companies for making me broke and causing emotional stress because I can't have all their great games. Knowing how bass ackwards the American legal system is, I'd probably get away with it too.

I pre-ordered Dragon Age: Origins and MW2, but I don't have this problem because Dragon Age was actually put away as a Christmas present. I will have had MW2 for almost 2 months by the time I get to actually play Dragon Ages.

I have been looking forward to Juarez - that game sounds like a lot of fun. Right now I am playing No One Lives Forever again, Cate Archer is still about my fave protagonist.

I'm playing Uncharted 2 right now. I really like it so far. I'm not sure it's quite as good as all the hype would have you believe, but so far it is awesome if not outstanding. I would start Dragon Age and then take a break to play Modern Warfare 2. MW2 should only take a single weekend to beat so you can be done with it and then dedicate the remainder of the month to Dragon Age.

I'll be playing all this good stuff... hells... yeah.

I enjoyed BiB as well. And you're right: the setting is a welcome change of pace. Did you ever get a chance to play the first one? It's not as solid as the follow-up, but it's still a decent game.

Glad you are enjoying it.

When BiB was out, I told myself I was going to wait for Red Dead Redemption to release (they were set for the same time). I guess BiB simply fell off my radar, especially when Red Dead was pushed back.
Personally, I would wait for Modern Warfare. It may be hell to look at DA and not play it, but MW should be over soon enough (and you don't play online anyways).

Decisions, decisions, eh? Just curious...do you see yourself putting any time in with the multiplayer for Uncharted 2, or is that pretty much a throwaway-type thing for you, since CoD2 is on the way?
Posted Nov 6, 2009 4:11 am PT
Indeed, Uncharted 2 is awesome. I also enjoyed the first game and I saw some improvements. I tried the Bound In Blood demo, not bad at all. I think you should wait for MW2, but it's just my opinion...
Posted Nov 6, 2009 5:41 am PT
And the good news is.........You don't have to play Uncharted 2 with other humans!
Posted Nov 6, 2009 6:23 am PT
I say quit your job, gold dig you a rich wife, and just play them all day long at your leisure.
Posted Nov 6, 2009 6:27 am PT
I've been playing Call of Juarez BIB and I think it's awesome! Even the multiplayer is kinda cool.
Posted Nov 6, 2009 6:51 am PT
Really playing month engrossing RPG's is not a good idea, you should play them in dry-game breaks with no good releases.
Posted Nov 6, 2009 7:48 am PT
Start Dragon Age, I just started yesterday myself
Posted Nov 6, 2009 8:12 am PT
I say do both! after a couple of roucus hours of MW2 have a mellow DA:O chaser of an hour or so before ya crash
Posted Nov 6, 2009 8:24 am PT
I too am enjoying Uncharted 2. Was not going to play it again until I had your official opinion tho.....
Posted Nov 6, 2009 8:47 am PT
BTW, I say go and see Zombieland. Its a funny, and fun, action horror. I have seen it twice. Its awesome!

@raven28256 - an excellent plan, but will you finish Dragon Age by the time all those great January releases come out?

@Setho10 - I'm one of those people who will play MW2 on veteran difficulty, which makes the game take a bit longer then it normally would. You're probably still right about it only lasting 2-3 days unfortunately.

@EarthThatWas - Bound In Blood got me interested in the first one. It's really hard to find nowadays though. I had to pick it up used when I saw a copy last month, something I almost never do. I haven't played it yet though.

@GeekyDad - I'm sorry, have we met? I don't generally like gaming with other people, so no, I haven't tried the multiplayer.

I will admit though, to being a little interested in the co-op portion of the game, since I hate the idea of extra levels that I haven't played, but I doubt I'll ever play them since I have no mic and don't really game at the same time as my few PSN friends.

@Gen_Warbuff - that is certainly good news. Like I told Geeky, I'm a little bumed about missing out on those co-op levels, but the core game was so great I can hardly complain.

@luc11044 - the achievement addict in me made me play online a few time to grab the achievements. It wasn't bad at all.... if you're in to that sort of thing.

@tiggerboy - I'll be sure to check that movie out.... once it hits DVD.
Posted Nov 6, 2009 9:06 am PT
Yeah, I forgot about that.
Posted Nov 6, 2009 9:32 am PT
the achievement addict in me is what prompted me to play MP.

I'm glad you are enjoying Uncharted 2. I doubt very seriously I will get to it much before 2011 or so. Everyone says it is great but there is just to much else I suddenly want to play. \

Funny you mention Call of Juarez bound in blood. Christopher noticed it today while we were doing a blockbuster run. He thought the box art was neat and asked if I had it. (it really is very difficult to keep track of all the games in this house.) As a matter of fact I don't have it (but I did have to come home and check before I could tell him :lol I am going to get it for him for Christmas. \

The people that I know that are playing Dragon Age are all saying pretty good things about it. I myself would start that. If you really feel the pull of Modern Warfare 2 you can always switch out. \

Have a great Weekend Dan.

Modern Warfare 2? By buying that game you're literally supporting terrorism.

Cool, I'm glad you like Uncharted 2, it's a great game. Also.. I agree with Setho10's idea on the game dilemma. Modern Warfare 2 should probably only take a weekend to finish, if not less.

I have been looking at Call of Juarez 2 for a time now... and you are not helping my budget with your comments I may rent it soon.

And blogs like yours certainly make me lucky for not having a PS3 If I did, my trouble picking games would increase
Posted Nov 7, 2009 7:17 am PT
Hah, be done with MW2 in a week? Call of Duty 4 and COD: WaW have lasted millions of players years before they get tired of them, it's the greatest value in a game you can ever get. The single player is just a warm-up for the online.
Posted Nov 7, 2009 8:40 am PT
@kellymae - Good call. I'm sure Christopher will enjoying fighting for the Confederacy

@Foolz3h - supporting undercover agents who pose as terrorists, perhaps.

@stanhigareda - I still haven't decided if having a PS3 is good or bad for me
Posted Nov 7, 2009 9:07 am PT
I also want to try Call of Juarez Bound in Blood too someday! I played Gun and it was a really fun game... kinda arcade feel but still a great game!

On the question of Modern Warfare 2... 2 more days and then you can start playing it... so I would wait to play it first!

I have a strong feeling that the Uncharted games will be my first complete play-throughs on my well-over-1-year-old PS3. I may have to cry at that feat.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 9:45 am PT
@Sandpiper121PP - oh no! A mod! Please don't moderate me again! I'll be good! I promise!

@SlikNik27 - you haven't beaten a single PS3 game? Yeah, you need to get on that. Uncharted isn't too long, and I think it's addictive enough that you won't have too much trouble getting to the end.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 7:22 pm PT
The Uncharted series is one of the main reasons I want a PS3, along with Infamous and Valkria Chronicles.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 7:25 pm PT
@SquareEnixFan13 - I didn't have much interest in the system until recently. Now it seems like there are plenty of exclusive games for it.
