This may surprise you, but I don't own a PC. Haven't for about four months, when a freak set of coincidence meant that my desktop and laptop both died at about the same time. Of course, I need to play PC games, but I took a very bold gamble and bought a Mac. Specifically, a MacBook Pro. And, four months into this crazy experiment, I find myself having no regrets whatsoever.

Sure, the guys like to haze me about it. When I suggest to Jeff that he buy a MacBook Pro, he says, without pause, "No, I need a computer, not a shiny toy." But I know I've got some of these guys interested. Brian's been inside an Apple store, lusting for a MacBook Pro. And Tim over in News is a closet Apple fan, too.

Switching to Intel was perhaps the smartest move Apple has finally made. I used to own a G3 Powerbook. Great machine, but the software selection was horrible. Apple bet on a bad architecture that not only couldn't match up with Intel and AMD, but that also relegated the platform to being a wallflower at the software prom.

Now that Macs use Intel processors, I can boot into Windows and play all my games without any issue. And games are the Mac's Achilles heel. (This despite the fact that Steve Jobs got his start with Atari!) But now I get the best of both worlds. My speedy, sleek, stylish Mac, and awesome PC games like Company of Heroes and Battlefield 2. Not bad for a shiny toy.

Lucky you man, I bought the old iBookG4's last year when I came to uni, and without the Intel Dual Core, I can't run XP seam-lessly (Virtual PC's is horrible) so I can't play my fav PC games anymore... and upgrading's just too much for me now! I'll get you for this Apples, I'll get you! LOL!

But I agree, shifting to Mac is the best move and I advise everybody to do so, even the Vista demo thingy runs properly on Parallel's Desktop (the best at emulating OS' on a Mac)... and Linux runs too. So this is the future, its here... I think!

I just got a MacBook a month ago. This thing is amazing, a much more convinient choice than the PC. And you're correct, switching to Intel was a very good decision.

Man, I'm so old school, I still only have my G3 Tower.

I usually own it mostly for garage band now, but they are handy, and easy to use, I really like Mac's, even though people always downtalk them, I'm glad I've been one of the few that have liked them since that 11 inch monitor came out with the computer attached, floppy drive, man, that ruled, I remember playing kids pix studio like there was no tomorrow. In 256 colours too.

But anyways, it took me awhile to switch to a PC, mostly cause of the lack of games on the mac, well, I'm glad I have both, but if I had the money, I'd probably get a new Macbook Pro.

Oh and thefjk, are you ever right, Virtual PC is horrible, I remember i couldn't even play need for speed hot pursuit 1 on it.

awww you've got your macbook next to your 360? Isn't that some kind of microsoft cardinal sin (j/k) Sweet setup

I'm waiting for the MacBook Pro refresh. When's it gonna happen, dammit!!!
Posted Oct 12, 2006 3:25 pm PT
Oh... the MAC. The designer's dream. My next computer will be a MAC, for sure. Laptop, maybe.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 3:44 pm PT
I hear too often that Macs can't play PC games and aren't as good as PC for games. I'd have to see it for myself to beleive it.

I'd love to own a Mac, but the day I can get a bleeding edge mac for under $1000 like I can with PC is far off...If at all possible.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 5:26 pm PT
i don't usually like macs but i recently used a MacBook Pro...and i was amazed...if apple keeps on sending out new stuff like this i mite become a mac fan my self...and i love the xbox360/MacBook Pro/ and i think a tv??? layout you got

My PC has been torn apart by viruses. From what I've heard the Mac has few viruses, trojans, things of that sort that could infect it, maybe its time to stray away from the Microsoft monopoly.

Gertsmann = pwned
Posted Oct 12, 2006 6:57 pm PT
With a PC I can just boot to windows and play games . . . for less.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 7:39 pm PT
Erm, why buy a Mac if you're going to use it for exactly the same things you'd buy a PC for, but far less? The only thing I can see ue for a Mac is for business applications. You want gaming, PC is where it's at. Mac's just don't have the legs to compare in that category.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 7:47 pm PT
I still have a PC but mostly use my Mac Book Pro also. Bootcamp works a treat for most PC games I've played.

Your pic, although darkish, looks pretty nice! I had a used mac once, and it was really neat!

Macs Are Amazing! Way to come over to the light side!

I've been debating whether or not to switch to a MAC from a PC. would it benefit me to do so or stay with the PC?
Posted Oct 12, 2006 9:49 pm PT
As soon as they announced the two button mouse, I had an inkling that they would switch to Intel processors to be able to boot Windows. Turns out I was right. It just made sense.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 10:11 pm PT
i used one just the other day, they're so much better than the earlier macs.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 10:38 pm PT
I just can't believe you still have the sticker on your 360 controller.
Posted Oct 12, 2006 11:11 pm PT
Another sign more and more people are moving to MAC
Posted Oct 12, 2006 11:34 pm PT
When I get a chance and extra cash I will switch over to the MAC. I am tired of error reports which doesn't do anything, spyware, virus scans, downloading the latest Java script, buying add-on's in order have a decent experience like the Xbox 360, it goes on. I'm especially tired of Microsofts incomplete operating system which gives them a reason to keep making more. It's an endless cycle. PC needs to die.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 12:41 am PT
Lately I've been noticing that there is little difference between the two computer platforms. It's seems like the two computer giants should just merge and make kick-ass operating systems.

The new Macs are sweet. I started on Apple IIe in 84,had a Performa & still have a G3 to go with my new G5. But even though it was a good move it wasn't a concsious decision by Apple. The suppliers of their old CPU(the C5) simply stopped making them because they weren't a large enough share of the market place to be a profitable endeavor. That is why Apple went to the Linux processor. Not as a brilliant tactical move but out of necessity! . you were pretty good on CNBCs "On the Money" awhile back.

I would get one except for teh fact that I like to do alot file sharing with my friends and it is to big a hastle to send 2 different types of file back and forth. Also, like he said the selection of game is really bad and I couldn't play my PC games on it. Also, they are pretty expensive. More expensive than a Dell notebook or something of the sorts.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 5:36 am PT
I also switched over to Mac a few months back and I will NEVER go back to PCs. Ever. Good to have you on board.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 6:06 am PT
If I would have enough money, I would buy a Mac right now. But I don't.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 6:20 am PT
Who the hell gives a damn?
Posted Oct 13, 2006 6:38 am PT
Mac = LAME....unless you're an art major...other than that its PC all the way.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 7:07 am PT
I just got myself a macbook as well. I went for the vanilla version in lieu of the Pro. Especially since I didn't want to be tempted to play games on my laptop. Of course I could always play Jedi Knight. . . hmmm.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 10:01 am PT
I was wandering, even write a question to Burning Questions, which of course never has been answered, now that I know that is possible to play my old and new PC games on a mac I can switch and I'm a web designer and avid gamer so double value to the purchase
Posted Oct 13, 2006 10:09 am PT
How about an iMac? It also has the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. I'm just trying to save some money here.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 11:24 am PT
I used PC's my whole life until about 3 years ago when I decided to give Apple a try. I bought a PowerBook G4 and it is still the best computer I have ever used (I'm typing on it now). I also have an iMac G5 for work. I have convinced 4 of my friends to switch to Macs and they all love them. Don't be afraid to give them a try, I never heard anyone regret the decision.

The only thing keeping me from gettin a mac is the price issue...you can very often get more from a pc with the same price. otherwise....macs are great.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 1:37 pm PT
It's totally cool how many people seem to regard Mac ownership as a moral issue and entre to some rarefied social stratum!
Posted Oct 13, 2006 1:45 pm PT
3 months with my macbook have been the gretest time I've had, as I play WoW on it, and my PC decided to not work properly, so Now I use it all the time, and as a design student i can say they are the epitome of industrial design.

Nice setup, Jason. Best of luck with your shiny new toy...er, Mac!

Mac's have always been personal computing deluxe but as you said, no joy for gamers. I too am very glad they have gone to Intel CPUs and it is now quite likely that my next desktop with be a Mac and not a PC. The biggest concern I have now is will a new Mac desktop accept and support a modern Nvidia PCI-e card for gaming, because without this essential upgrade path, they are not a lot better off than they ever were in terms of gaming. I need to visit the Apple site and do my homework about this. Or, I know! A certain Gamespot editor could do a very cool article on Mac Gaming today including hardware upgrades, etc. to make a Mac desktop or laptop the ULTIMATE gaming rig without the nasty Windows to contend with for everyday computing needs. Another issue of concern is this: will such a setup allow me to share files between the two operating systems via a shared folder so that I can do my Gamespot reading and downloads of demos, guides, etc. to this folder and then access them within a Windows environment when I want to play but not subject myself to Internet Exploiter. As for the comment about this being a toy vs a computer I just have to laugh. The Mac has always been years ahead of PCs in terms of usability, interface, operating system enhancements, etc. While Windows is built on some pretty terrible code, the Mac's interface is built on a time tested and true rock solid UNIX variant that is far more secure by design than the current Windows can ever be. I cannot comment on Vista and security of course since it is not released but I haven't the highest hopes for the Redmond gang to code anything I'd want to boot vs the Mac OS other than for PC gaming out of necessity. ;-)

Just because it can run Windows XP doesnt mean it has good gaming performance. Mac's need to support the latest and greatest GPU's, and have more affordable RAM for me to consider getting one. Plus, support for Vista and DX10 when they come along.
Posted Oct 13, 2006 9:54 pm PT
sorry boocreepyfootdr, the macpro has standard PC SO-DIMMS DDR2...
it's affordable ram...

and look at all the other machines exluding the Mac Pro, all affordable DDR2...

and Hellraiser3899 OS X has ZERO trojans, Zero viruses, and ZERO spyware.
yes the list is again ZERO, there were some people who claimed an application was spyware but you had to give your password MAKING IT INSTALLED SOFTWARE.

and even that doesn't function anymore.

MBP is my first mac that I got for class. I didn't like it at first but ever since I've been using a mac only for the last 2 month because my PC broke, I've been loving it even more. Everytime I use a pc, it feels so weird and dated (I have (had) P4 3.0ghz HT w/ 6800 ultra). Once you get pass the small learning curve and learn a few hot keys, OSX is totally awesome.

Bought my MacBook a while ago and it's been fantastic. Still do half my work on my G4 iMac, though.

OS X on Mac Intel is the best of all worlds for the Desktop platform, it’s when Unix finally loses it’s Desktop ugly. I too will be buying a new Mac Mini soon, replacing my AMD64 SLI PC. I’m sick to death of Windows…and Vista is not going to change my mind about that either. PC Gaming is obsolete now, for me, when you have the likes of Nintendo Wii (WiiConnect24) and Xbox 360 (Xbox Live). If Apple was smart they would sell the OS X Desktop OS (with close to equal hardware support / drivers as that of Windows) that could be installed on any modern PC. If they sold it for $150 retail including offering a strong software OEM channel for the OS X, Apple would take a very large chuck out of the MS dominated market. This, obviously, would prompt a lot more companies to develop software for the OS X too. So why doesn’t Apple do this? Anyone?

I got a MacBook a few months back and so far I'm happy with the switch

Apple doesn't do what MolsonCDN wants because then you start getting into the compatibility issues that Microsoft deals with. Windows is a good platform, and it's frankly amazing that it works with the countless hardware configurations out there. It's a very open architecture in that you can plug pretty much any type of hardware and it more or less works. The problem you run into is if the third-party hardware maker has bad drivers.

Apple controls the hardware and the software very tightly, so the integration is impressive. The price is that you can't go out and build a Mac system, or you can't buy a Mac and then buy a Creative X-Fi sound card for it, etc, etc. It's a very closed platform in that regards. It's not meant to be modified much by the end user.

Vista is looking very good, from what my IT friends tell me. I'll build a Vista machine once it ships, cause DX 10 is going to be worth it.

I am looking in the market for some new PC hardware, mostly graphics and ram cards. While I am not looking for a laptop, I will say that if I ever buy a laptop, ill be looking at that thing. Man it looks nice. Good luck, hope it treats you well.

I have been thinking of buying a Mac. But the problem is that I won't be able to play Cyrsis or Flight Simulator X in DX10 because Boot Camp is only for Windows XP. Also I like being able to upgrade my computer and Macs are VERY limited in upgradeablity. So I will be sticking with the PC for now unless they release a Boot Camp that is for Vista.
