The New York Post explains it! Ben Silverman, NBC Entertainment boss is quite clear in his priority. He doesn't care about ratings. He doesn't care about quality programming. He is only out to make a profit. OK, I get it. TV is a business, and the in the corporate world, the bottom line is really the only thing that matters. However, I still have to believe it is possible to make great shows and still make money. He isn't even trying, and his bosses are all for it! G.E. if you don't care about programming, for Goodness sakes, sell off NBC already and let someone who cares run the company. http://www.nypost.com/seven/07172008/business/silverman_channeling_jack_welch_120303.htm
So how's that for my first blog entry? I guess in the interest of full disclosure I have to say that I once worked for NBC and that I do detest Ben Silverman and what he seems to stand for. I am a TV traditionalist. I once had visions of myself in his job, but soon realized that the age of Brandon Tartikoff is over. There is just no point. Great TV, family viewing, and sky high ratings are a thing of the past. Television now, and especially NBC (G.E.) could care less about giving us great programming. The artistry is gone. Of all people to herald this new era, we have Mr. Silverman - a producer for pete's sake. How can someone who rose up the ranks by producing some great TV suddenly turn into a corporate stuffed suit and decide to concentrate only on profit? How unfortunate for NBC. Here's hoping Kevin Reilly over at FOX can show NBC what they lost.
