I saw The Dark Knight today. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! The thing I love about Christopher Nolan's take on the series is that I feel like I am watching a great movie that happens to be about a superhero, instead of watching a superhero movie. I like superhero movies, but I like that these at least don't seem like cartoons. The characters, even the villains, behave like real people might in those circumstances. They may be crazy, but they are rooted in reality. There are no vats of mystery chemicals to explain away someone's behavior. They are just screwed up humans.

He also casts amazing actors, even in smaller roles. Yes, Heath Ledger was fantastic. I totally bought the psychotic anarchist thing. So were Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart. I'm glad Maggie Gyllanhaal was hired to play Rachel instead of some cookie-cutter twenty-something. As a die-hard Dazed and Confused fan, I was so happy to see Nicky Katt as the very concerned SWAT team member. Love him!

I can't wait for the third one. Maybe Catwoman will show up. The Batsuit should stand up to her.

I have not regularly watched a sitcom since Arrested Development was cancelled. Before that, I don't remember the last sitcom I watched. Since then, I have watched random episodes of How I Met Your Mother and a few others. They're funny, I guess, but not enough to get me to tune in each week. I usually like shows that are a mixture of drama/sci-fi/comedy, like Supernatural, Pushing Daisies, and Gossip Girl. I find them much funnier.

I have been hearing about The Office for years, and friends have been telling me that I HAD to watch it. That made me want to NEVER watch it. This summer I decided I would give in and watch all four seasons. It made me laugh like a fool. I finally finished all the episodes today and am totally hooked. Now I can't wait for next season.

I also watched the entire series of the British show Spaced from the directors, writers, and stars of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. I loved it. It was packed with references to horror and sci-fi movies and shows. The quirky comedy was perfect for me.

Watching these sitcoms and actually finding them funny gives me hope that sitcoms are not dead to me.

Death at a Funeral
This is the sort of comedy that I love. Anyone afraid that a British comedy will be too highbrow will be in for a shock. Some of the funniest parts are decidedly lowbrow, including more than one instance of bathroom humor and male nudity. Alan...

I am thrilled that he got an Emmy nomination. I have been aware of Lee for the last few years. I saw Soldier's Girl, in which he convincingly played a transsexual performer. Lee and his co-star Troy Garity both blew me away with their talent...
