Unfortunately, this funny movie followed two other recent penguin films and didn't get the viewership it deserved. The plot was light-hearted and well-told (loved the documentary-style approach), the animation was beautiful, and the dialogue sounded totally natural. And after the quasi-serious messages of March of the Penguins and Happy Feet, it was refreshing to have a more personal type of moral message with Surf's Up.

The first time I saw this movie, I have to say it was a little much for me. Luckily, I watched it a second time a couple of years later and fell in love. Ewan McGregor has a wonderful singing voice, and Nicole was beautiful of course. Choreography was lively and fun, and the photography was a riot to the eyes. The characters of Zidler and the Duke were my favorites and provided excellent comic foils to what could have turned out to be a very depressing movie. Even though the hero reveals at the beginning of the film what happened to his lover, I found myself hoping that it would still somehow end happily ever after for both of them.

Like many movies, this one started out with a good concept but couldn't seem to carry through. For some unknown reason, some terrorists (I can't remember, were they Russian? I think they were Russian...) have decided to steal a nuke and blow up...

Like many movies, this one started out with a good concept but couldn't seem to carry through. For some unknown reason, some terrorists (I can't remember, were they Russian? I think they were Russian...) have decided to steal a nuke and blow up L.A. And the FBI is trying to stop them. Cue Nicolas Cage, a clairvoyant who can only mysteriously see two minutes ahead into his own life, unless Jessica Biel is involved. The acting was pretty dull. There were things that didn't really belong in the movie (yeah, Jessica teaches native Americans, we get it, she's nice), and they should have left out the last minute.

As someone who grew up with Disney classics, I believe The Lion King may be the last truly great film produced by their animation department (I'm not including their CGI films). The story is typically Disney. After a tribulation, the hero finds himself facing the villain and overcoming adversity. Despite the cliche story, the characters are lovable, the music is memorable, and the animation is 2-D at it's finest.
