Get Smart was supposed to be one of the funniest comedies released this year so far. Apparently it won over the majority of movie critics, and did substantially better in the box office than Love Guru. I was really excited going into the theater. However, Get Smart was a complete disappointment, and was definitely not worth watching.
Now I know, the plot may not be so important in a comedy as supposed to a drama or thriller, but it is still a crucial component to any good movie. Get Smart's plot was just too simple - chase the bad guy and stop him from executing his evil plan. Yes fine, that premise is similar to many other movies out there, but the way this movie delivered the plot was horrible. The movie was simply not well paced and didn't seem to flow properly. At one point, I thought the movie was already over, and then all of a sudden we're thrown back into the chase the bad guy sequence.
Get Smart is supposed to be a comedy, but it failed to be funny. Jokes were extremely predictable and unoriginal, it was almost embarrassing to watch, and the more funny sequences were already given away in all the trailers. Even Steve Carell didn't deliver his usual outstanding performance, although I'm not sure it's completely his fault; the material he had to deal with was just awful in the first place. This movie tries to be funny but fails.
The two stars that saved the film from being a complete disaster were Terrence Stamp and Anne Hathaway. Stamp, who I will always think of as General Zod from the Superman films, played Siegfried, the villain of the terrorist group KAOS. He portrays the character in such a cool and calm fashion, and was an absolute joy to watch. Anne Hathaway was the other brilliant star. Not only is she amazingly gorgeous in the movie, she acts well too. She's really evolved as an actress in my opinion, and I hope she can find better roles to fill in the future.
Overall, Get Smart is an unintelligent, uninspiring, and simply unfunny movie. It wasn't necessarilly the acting that was lacking, but rather the writing. It's a shame, I think it could have had so much more potential, but it turned out to be another typical, forgetful comedy that no one will remember after a couple months.
