... and now I'm depressed. It's a typical Oshii film in many ways but also darker and slower. Kawai's music is incredible as usual. Fantastic visuals. Definitely recommended if you can take a heavy dose of cynicism and a generally sad story.

Have you watched the original Ghost In the Shell or its sequel, Innocence? The Sky Crawlers is an anime film directed by the same guy (also the same composer for the music) based on a series of Japanese novels.

It tells the story of a few individuals who are destined to live their short lives fighting in commercial wars. Nation states have been more or less abolished but since the human mind needs to see others suffer to be able to enjoy life some corporations are vaging neverending corporate conflicts which are covered like sport events to fulfill that need. The battles are fought exclusively in the air and look incredibly beautiful.

It's a pretty dark movie. The 'older' characters in the movie have more or less realised that suicide is better than continued existence for them.
