I have always been a fan of cinema. I enjoy watching many types of genres such as action/adventure, comedy, drama, horror, and some romance. My favorite one is action/adventure I love getting the thrill out of that. I have been observing all of these genres until I noticed one thing. That there has been alot of movies that the setting is post apocalyptic. For example Spielberg's War of the Worlds. The movie settles around an alien attack that is occuring in New York. Starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning both of them have to survive the attack.

Then in 2007 "I Am Legend" was released. The plot goes about a virus that turns people into hemocytes, they act like vampires and go around New York in the dark. While Will Smith the only one in New York and the only one that is immune to the virus is trying to figure out a cure. At the start of the movie you are awed by the stunning look of New York City which looks like a ruin that is post - apocalyptic.

One that came out January of this year was "Cloverfield". The film is about a huge creature roaming around New Yok City and the survival of some people. The films point of view is thorugh a video camera (which alot of people hated that). I thought the idea was perfect since it makes you feel like you are in there and also makes it look official. But if you are motion sickness then you should not watch it. One thing I loved about this movie is the creature as they have some sick close-ups makes you think that these people roaming around have no hope whatsoever as their fight for survival. If you want to find out where the creature came from read here. That link is what many people believe it came from.

A new one that just recently came out is called "Doomsday", about a virus that breaks out in the Britain isles that turns people into zombies while authorities try to quarantine it. After the success of the quaratine 30 decades later the virus breaks out again in this ruin off the coast of Britain. So this chick tries to go in there to find a cure, when she gets there evil bandits who are infected have taken over the place first. Even though this film focuses more on action you still have that view that everything is empty and dead.

Another one that is really popular and that surrounds Britain again is called "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later". The movie focuses on a virus that breaks out around Britain. "28 Days Later" starts with Cilian Murphy where he just wakes up from a hospital thinking that the rapture came and he was left. The whole movie has a really really deep post apocalyptic view. "28 Weeks Later" is after the events that happened in "28 Days Later" following the view of two kids one boy and one girl trying to fight their way to survival. The second one is when they start to quaratine it but everything goes wrong.

One that is very popular and in which all of you should know is the Resident Evil Trilogy. The movie adapted from the popular video game frachise Resident Evil. I really dont want to go into deep details but you should know the story virus breaks out, end of the world, hope comes, etc. Now the big difference about this film is that there is a deep conspiracy in the plot. This movei fits both genres action/adventure and horror.

Now you see ever since the year 2000 a bunch of these movies have been coming even new ones are coming for example M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening". Also a sequel for "Cloverfield", all I am trying to state that this genre is very popular and also the plot and the feeling of the end of the world is very popular as well.

They've always been popular, well at least to me. I Am Legend made like a record when it came out and movies like Dawn of the Dead kinda spawned like growth of it, but they always have been kinda interesting.

seems that this particular genre goes through stages hiccup. A bunch of them came out about 10-12 years ago as well, all really very good movies. Then they kind of died off (if you will pardon the pun) and then we saw a resurgence over the last year or so again. I think it is the same with all types of movies though.

I think people have a fascination with what is to come and how the world is going to end and because of that...they like to think of ways it could end, even if it doesn't. I haven't seen Cloverfield or Legend yet, but I want to.

Yeah the end of the world seems to always be a topic in the public mind. From the cold war and imminent Russian attack to the war on terror and such.

I agree with you there kellymae. All I am trying to say that through the timeline of the year 2000 there has been a large list of apocalyptic movies.

There should be a nice resurgence now that Al Gore has everyone mesmerized about global warming instead of the ozone layer or something nuclear. And the emo kids demanding more vampires and zombies. Terminator 3 had a nuclear ending, but no one cared.

But the really scary thought is that if it continues, the chances of a Waterworld remake go up dramatically.

I like survival/end of world movies.:0

Cillian Murphy not Jim Caviezel.

Darnet! I always forget about those two.

There certainly seems to be a trend these days, but that genre has always been around. Mad Max, A Boy and His Dog, Waterworld (yuck), just to name a few. Personally, I like the genre when its done well. 28 Days later was amazing (and I usually don't dig that kind of flick). 28 Weeks Later was kinda crap.

And not one of them as good as The Road Warrior. Mad Max rules.

People just seem to like that genre. A couple of years back, Day after Tomorrow was a big hit, although it generally is a bad film.

(comb_over And not one of them as good as The Road Warrior. Mad Max rules)

dooms day reminded me of mad max with the weird hair and the cars with the huge engines. it seemed some what dated to me.

I think it has a lot to do with the political climate of the world these days, full of war and despair. This depressing psychological "disease" maybe has gripped filmmakers and maybe it's a social comment of our times. Or maybe it's because we're in the new millenium, and so we're nervous of what this new century and age brings. We don't know the outcome, so we try to predict it (like that Nostradamus did). Maybe these movies are a way of showing us this new reality, this new perspective that we should look at things from a realistic view and see what the future could bring, and what if the future brings a level of new opportunities that are too dangerous to the wrong people. Now, that's just me trying to find some reason in why these apocalyptic movies are so prominent. Or it could be that we like gore and death as a natural human instinct, and so the apocalypse brings out more of those wishes. I don't know

I haven't seen all of those (28 days, Resident Evil 1 & 2, War of The Worlds). The oly one I enjoyed was 28 Days Later because instead of focusing on the USA it was set in england, which is refreshing.

Honestly I HATED War of The Worlds and seriously damged Speilbergs image, but I never thought he was such a great director anyway.

No, they've always been popular.
Look 10 years back, you had movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact.
Look back 20 or so years, Dawn of the Dead anyone?
Look back 30 or so years, you had Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man.

They do seem to be in vogue right now though. Personally i welcome them, i love myself an apocalyptic action-fest.

The best apocalyptic movie is Mad Max

well personally i lub them. they seem really wierd and mysterious and different from others. dunno about their populairty but i think it will get more popular soon. also movies like the myst had a kinda bad ending. they didn't really show what was inside and it made you want more than what it already had but well i liked it xD.

Yea those movies have always been popular, even if they aren't really all that good. It seems like any old movie producer can spin off some post apocalypse story and make a bunch of money. Oh and I am still alive and kicking, if you even remember me...
