Why fourteen? Because 10-12 are too small, 13 is unlucky, and 15 is an uneven number. If the games were to have a giant fight to the death, then they could fight 7-versus-7. My experiences tell me that 7 is in fact a lucky number; thus, the list will be a countdown from 14.

Also due to the lack of regularity in blogging, I might as well cram all of the games into one blog – this one!

Yeah, I did this thing once before, but that list is so damn outdated and poorly written that I feel obligated to update it. So consider this a mid-2009 report. Rules stay the same; only one game per-franchise. That's not to say that the ones that were cut from last year's (or maybe the year before that?) countdown suddenly suck now. It's just that as a growing boy; my feelings are always changing and experiencing new, exciting things. Very hot, moist, exciting things indeed, but I digress – here's the countdown!

-

-

-

14 - DJ Max: Portable 2

I'm not one too obsess over music games, but I have an obsession with the DJ Max series. They're fast, difficult, and very fun. Portable 2 happens to be the most polished of the bunch in my eyes. My poor PSP has to constantly put up with this game's demand for abusing your buttons. No, that's not me playing, but I can clear that song all the same.

-

-

-

13 - BlazBlue

My favorite fighting game ever hands down. Fast fighting, gorgeous presentation, and a boat-load of features make BlazBlue one of the most complete fighters around. Just make sure you don't completely screw up the balance we have going on here with the EU release of the game, alright Aksys?

-

-

-

12 - Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal

A Ratchet and Clank game was inevitably going on the list, but which one? Well, only one has the best villain ever. Only one has the funniest plot. Only one had the honor of being the last Ratchet and Clank game with any sort of sexual innuendo in the title. Hells yeah! Up Your Arsenal was an amazing game.

-

-

-

11 - Megaman: Battle Network

Probably my second-most played handheld game ever; it also happened to be my very first GameBoy Advance game ever as well, and what an awesome half-assed decision that was. The game's battle mechanics were surprisingly deep, rewarding players for both tact and real-time skills. The challenge was definitely there, and the bosses were fun as hell. But man, Chaud was a complete dick – just like Gary from Pokemon.

-

-

-

10 - Shadow of the Colossus

BIG MONSTERS I FIGHT GOOD AND SAVE GIRL WHO ALSO MY GIRLFRIEND/FOSTER-MOM????!!! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

-

-

-

9 - Starfox 64

From the hilarious radio-chatter, to the branching paths, to the secrets, and to the StarWolf team, you really can't go wrong with Starfox 64. It simply delivers non-stop fun regardless of who you are. Also, you can actually friendly-fire at Slippy if you want. Effin' approved!

-

-

-

8 - Metroid Fusion

Super Metroid might have been one hell of an awesome game, but the absolute polish in the controls for Metroid Fusion mixed with the best atmosphere in any 2-D game I've ever played makes for the best Metroid game ever. Plus, the whole cat-and-mouse thing that happened between you and the SA-X was seriously some kind of mind-game.

"OH ****, WAS THAT THE SA-X? WAS THAT THE ****ING SA-X? CUZ IF IT WAS, I SWEAR – I'M GOING TO DROP THIS GBA AND LEAVE THE ROOM"

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGH!~

-

-

-

7 - Valkyria Chronicles

This game came out of nowhere and blew me away. Heartwarming story mixed with fluid, unique gameplay makes this chronicle a legend. SEE, GAMETRAILERS?! I CAN MAKE WITTY PRE-VIDEO REVIEW REMARKS TOO!

-

-

-

6 - Pokemon Silver

So you know how Megaman Battle Network was my second most played handheld game ever? Well, guess what the first was! Yep, not only is this my number one played handheld game ever, but it also happens to be my very first handheld game ever as well. Seeing as I barely bought new games back then, this one got all of my attention for a long while. I had level 100s across the board in my party with Mewtwos, Mews, Celebis, Lugias and Typhlosions up the arse.

-

-

-

5 - Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

"Oh hey guys, did you just say best Zelda game ever? Sorry I'm late, but I was too busy having the greatest atmosphere ever mixed with incredibly well-done time travelling mechanics! What's that? You love how they took the solid mechanics from Ocarina and took them somewhere completely different? Aww shucks, I love you too!"

Creepiest game ever.

-

-

-

4 - Super Mario World

If I had to play one game for the rest of my life, it would have to be Super Mario World. Everything about this game is made up of amazing, and it also happens to hold the record for the longest time-span spent playing: my entire lifetime.

-

-

-

3 - Okami

Makin' flowers!

LIKE A GOD

Awesome music!

LIKE A GOD

Feeding bunnies!

LIKE A GOD

Painting bridges!

LIKE A GOD

-

-

-

2 - Final Fantasy X

I'm a pretty big fan of the Final Fantasy series, but in between some money-grabbing spin-offs and long-assed development cycles, there are actually only a handful of games from the franchise I truly love.

So after nearly 4 whole seconds of consideration, Final Fantasy X takes the cake. Excellent plot, fun battle system, and a great cast of characters make this the most engaging Final Fantasy (to me) yet.

Final Fantasy XIII, I'm expecting great things from you.

-

-

-

1 - Metal Gear Solid 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4?

Whoah whoah whoah! Do we have a tie here?! That's not allowed!

Well, let's see:

Looks like the winner is:

***SPOILER***

-

-

-

That's all, folks! Now to be fair, there are still a lot of games I've yet to play (Devil May Cry 1 and 3 will be eBay'd very soon) along with many games I'm dying to get my hands on in the future (FFXIII, Bayonetta, etc). So until next year, assume I've made awkward love to every single game mentioned above!

Charlie Clouser - "Hello Zepp"

Down-hill movie franchise, excellent soundtrack.

Nice picture of Okami under Pokemon Silver...
Posted Aug 19, 2009 4:56 pm PT
You know, I just love Okami so damn much.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 4:58 pm PT
I totally totally agree with the Mega Man Battle Network being up there. I loved those games to death. I ate them up like candy lol. And of course pokemon, though I'd probably spend too much time trying to cram all of them on the list. Okami too. We need more games like that. And for your last one...lol with the pic. (Though I never played MGS4.)
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:06 pm PT
nice list. I love final fantasy too!
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:09 pm PT
I like the way you like your games. Granted I've only played 7 games on that list. OH WAIT. 7! NO WAY LUCKY NUMBER! SCORE!!
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:37 pm PT
Nice list, I can't narrow down favourites like this at all. Although Final Fantasy VII would end up on top, probably followed by Final Fantasy X.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:41 pm PT
Love the "Like a Boss" reference too I rofl everytime I hear it.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:51 pm PT
Nice games! Epic music too (even though I'm not crazy about the movie Saw ) !
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:54 pm PT
*Sees SotC rank*

WE HAVE PREFERENCE DIFFERENCES! (Spare me the "We all have differences " speech please. )

That aside, Valkyria Chronicles is for most certainly a good game. You'll hear no bashing from me about it. Except for maybe my disliking for the 2-3 annoying male characters that you can easily just not enlist into battle. =)

And yes, FFXIII BETTER do a grand job. Enough to replace X in my heart. lol

One more thing, I love what you did to the MGS3 one. And I believe we're in agreement for the entire chart. Really! XD
Posted Aug 19, 2009 5:58 pm PT
yes finally someone who thinks that MGS 3 isnt the weakest in the series.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 6:09 pm PT
Awesome choices, and the number one (or rather both number ones) are both 2 of my favorite games ever.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 6:10 pm PT
I missed Starfox 64. It had a good soundtrack too. I liked hearing Star Wolf's theme everytime I fought him.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 6:11 pm PT
I've played or owned 6,7 and 4. Great games too, although the Johto Pokemons were my least favorite, I didn't care for the map.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 6:22 pm PT
Great! Some awesome choices there man, so filled out and soft and nice and sweet....ok now I have to stop. Valkyria, yes as you pretty well know I need to finish that. BAD. Pokemon Silver? wow thats the one I had to!! it is without a doubt THE single most time Ive spent gaming on a handheld as well, ahhh the good old days kicking around little tiny things with other little tiny things, where has all the simplicity in life gone? As long as you have a Zelda game on there it doesnt matter, there just needs to be one I knew Mario World would be there. Im partial to FFVII myself but X would be a VERY close second. As for MGS, I cant pick any, they are all the best games ever made to me but I agree with that hilarious Otacon chart there
Posted Aug 19, 2009 6:51 pm PT
Damn, when I hear that music I just expect a huge twist. Anyway good list. Nice to see FFX up there, I'm pratically obssessed with that game.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 7:11 pm PT
So many hours spent with most of the games you listed.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 8:34 pm PT
I CHALLENGE YOU TO A MATHC OF BLAZ BLUE FISTICUFFS SO I CAN LOOZE HORRIBLY! AWWWRGHFARGLBRALGUIOCVCBCWOOCHICKENAIROASDMV
Posted Aug 19, 2009 9:08 pm PT
This is some nice list u have there man.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 9:17 pm PT
lmao I love the last part! Piloting Metal Gear Rex was amazing. But my favorite part of the game had to be *SPOILER SPOILER* the microwave part !
Posted Aug 19, 2009 9:18 pm PT
I'll be honest, I've only played Pokemon Silver, Megaman, and Super Mario World from that list.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 9:47 pm PT
UH ! Ummh.....The only games I've played so far are Superr Mario World, FFX and both MGS 3 and 4........

And yes.....If you have a PS3 and you don't have Valkyria Chronicles like Hazelnutman you're doing it wrong ! I guess I'll be wrong for a long time.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 9:50 pm PT
This list is full of win. And though many felt going commando was the best of the series, I felt Up your Arsenal was better because of Nefarious alone.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 10:03 pm PT
Nice list. Might need a bit more of Persona 4 though...
I should probably do a favorite game list sometime soon as well. FFX is the best. Glad to see it at number 2 here.
Posted Aug 19, 2009 11:11 pm PT
Hm, seems like we like the same kind of games. That would be completely similar to my list
Pokemon Silver is also my most played game (besides MMO's). Put around 400 hours into it. Got all 251 Pokemon on level 100. Back in the days I was a real Pokemon nerd
Posted Aug 20, 2009 12:33 am PT
Great list you got there, I have to agree with you. Valkyria Chronicles truly is a memorable game with its unique and challenging gameplay, it didn't feel like an RPG at all. I really liked how charming and engrossing its story turned out to be. The fact that its getting the sequel it deserves, even better.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 12:59 am PT
Great list! MGS4 is my favorite game hands down closely followed by Resident Evil 4 and God of War (I'm more into action/adventure games) I'm still waiting for BlazBlue to release in my country, which is most likely next year so I might end up buying Tekken 6 FFX was a masterpiece and I'm hoping FFXIII will be just as good Oh yes and who can forget Okami and Shadow of the Colossus...2 unique games that have stolen countless hours of my life Anyways be sure to get DMC3...it's really good and is one of my favorite games in the series.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 1:09 am PT
Man my list would be so much better and eletist, It would be full of games you've never even heard of because I'm king of the neckbeards.

But no you're list is pretty good, surprised at the amount of games on there I haven't played though. Okami, legend of zelda, SotC, Metroid Fusion, Dj max, starfox, blazblue, megaman... haven';t played those. The N64 games I never played because I never owned one of those. Dj max because I've never even heard of it besides in passing. Megaman because it just didn't seem good. SotC because my ps2 was dead before that game ever came out and I don't really feel like playing it now.. seems pretty boring. Blazblue because I haven't seen it in stores here yet. Have you played Guilty gear? Guilty Gear X2 is my favourite 2dFighter of all time (closely followed by Mv vs Capcom) and has the same developers as blazblue I believe.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 3:34 am PT
That's an epic list, BlazBlue is an epic game. I agree with all the list.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 4:31 am PT
@theunloved: Hells yeah, a fellow Battle Network fan Seriously, I loved the game to death - zany internet-terrorist plot and all

Looks like we both have a similar taste in games then!
===============
@Nintenkid49: Who doesn't (or at least one of them)
===============
@McMJ3:I like the way you move it. OH SNAP IT'S THE SIGN OF WHICH-CRAFT!

lol, I was hoping someone would get the parody, Someone.
===============
@BenderUnit22: Well, I haven't played so many damn games like you But man, that's not to say it was easy narrowing down the choices. My original list had over 40 nominees. It was like slowly slaughtering my children according to whom I loved more. Errr... something like that.

But yeah, I was so damn close in making it a 2 way tie between those two games. I just happened to have more of a nostalgic feel over FFX for some reason - mainly because it was my first ever Final Fantasy game
===============
@neil_2468: Thanks! Yeah, you don't have to enjoy or watch the movies to appreciate the music.
===============
@Symphonycometh: OH CRAP *hides behind "differences" argument*

Yep, FFXIII is giving me that FFX vibe, which is the main reason for my huge anticipation.

Hooray! Glad I drew a chart people could agree on for a change.
===============
@reo-117: WHOAH WHOAH WHOAH?! Weakest? Dude, no way! Who would say that?
===============
@Gohansephiroth: Yes, you could say that they're both ranked at #0.5???!!!
===============
@bigmouthkid: I CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT, STARFOX
ANDROSS HAS ORDERED US TO TAKE YOU DOWN
ANDROSS'S ENEMY, IS MY ENEMY!
===============
@Cody13_2012: Original 150 ftw!~
===============
@Roman_Irishman: Like a kitten, eh?
Hells yeah, Pokemon Yeah man, there was nothing like being a kid with the only thing on his mind being to catch them all!

Of course a Zelda game needed to be there I was close to declaring a draw between FFVII and FFX, but decided to be firm about my decision because I was already compromising my own rules with the MGS games ===============

@CleanPlayer: Yeah, the plot twists in 1, 2, and 4 were mostly great (especially Saw 1). Can't say I enjoyed Saw 5 all that much though

Yep, awesome game is awesome. It was actually one of my earlier PS2 games as well, giving it some sentimental value as well.
===============
@Flame_Blade88: Hmmm, most of the games on this list would have been played for an average of 50 hous, with some games such as Pokemon, SMW, DJ Max, and BlazBlue exceeding into the 100s, 200s. and even 500s.
===============
@Orlandun: I'm feeling incredibly pissed at not being able to beat Unlimited Ragna in Score Attack mode as Noel, so I think I'm up for taking it out on you. Send me a challenge anytime!
===============
@AbyssD: Thanks, man!
===============
@Pharoah__Link: Hells yeah, I was totally like, "YES KOJIMA, HAVE MY BABIES!" I've always wanted to drive one of those suckers. For nearly ten years, it has teased me.
===============
@Stevie_Q: lol, no one's expecting anyone to have played every game in existence
===============
@N-REAL: Haha, that's totally fine, man You've played some really good games at the least

Damn it dude, just order it from Amazon or something. It's like less than 50 bucks online They'll ship to Mexico (I think). Maybe if I win the lottery or something, I'll send a copy over to you
===============
@shalashaska88: Don't forget Lawrence: The Bass Playing Butler. Freaking awesome game was freaking awesome.

And thanks
===============
@yokofox33: Blegh, I've been procrastinating the entire Persona series. Maybe you'll see one next year?!

I'll be looking forward to your's then!
===============
@ uRan_Ehr: We are long-lost gaming brothers: confirmed! Hey man, being a Pokemon nerd is the coolest thing ever
===============
@david_lck: Yeah, I'm buying a second PSP just for Valkyria Chronicles 2. It's going to be awesome, although I hope a third game will arrive on the PS3 sometime later.
===============
@herviross_2: Stealing life?! I think when talking about those awesome games, you surely mean INVESTED! Yep, definately picking up DMC1 and 3 really soon. Should be great.
===============
@The_Tombo: I could have gone totally Asian on everyone and filled the list with never-localized games from Japan/Korea, but I decided against it

Damn, well DJ Max is pretty much the craziest rhythm game you'll ever play. Megaman Battle Network was surprisingly amazing. SOTC is far from boring. BlazBlue is being released in EU with exclusive characters or something apparently, as linked under the BlazBlue section of the entry.

Specifically, I haven't played X2, but I have Guilty Gear XX Accent Core. Great game indeed, and the dudes who made Guilty Gear did in fact work completely on BlazBlue. That's why you need to get your hands on BB asap so I can show you the power of my obsession.
===============
@Primo295: Hells yeah, BlazBlue is awesome! Thanks, bro
Posted Aug 20, 2009 5:21 am PT
Nice MGS4 pic
Posted Aug 20, 2009 6:00 am PT
Thanks ! VC has been around here since it's launch, so it seems that I'll be doing ti wrong for a long time......
Posted Aug 20, 2009 7:00 am PT
Trust me, if Blazblue is very much like Guilty gear I will destroy you. I used to beat the crap out of gold potemkin with normal ky kiske. Well I beat the crap out of everybody with ky, apparantly he was low tier too in GGX2. But yeah I'll buy it and play you
Posted Aug 20, 2009 7:35 am PT
Do I have your PSN id? If not send me an add. I'm known as Orlandun on there to.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 9:16 am PT
Gotta love the saw theme song, my favourite games are mostly during the NES and SNES days.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 9:48 am PT
Well, not every game I played would have a chance to qualify for my top 14 desu.

I pretty much have the same thing with FFVII being my first FF desu. Rationally speaking, I'd say FFVI would probably be the "best" FF (the cast, graphics, music, opera scene, Kefka, etc), but FFVII hold a special place in my heart for eternity desu.

I also like the big punch in the face with Majora's Mask. I personally think A Link to the Past was by far the best Zelda desu.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 10:53 am PT
That one gave me some lolz.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 11:44 am PT
No. Do not compute.

There shouldn't be 2 winners. What? This is his blog?

Damn!

Good choice though. Play only half of them, and I haven't finish MGS3. Can't remember why though. Most likely I didn't like the gameplay.
Posted Aug 20, 2009 3:22 pm PT
huh how can MGS4 not win Plot??? but great list love Metroid Fusion FFX R&C UYA and many more on ur list
Posted Aug 20, 2009 6:20 pm PT
I was just thinking... you're a liar. There's 15 games here... it's technically a top 15!
Posted Aug 20, 2009 7:11 pm PT
@Hanzoadam: Thanks, buddeh!
===============
@N-REAL: Very wrong indeed. Once I rule the world, I'm getting you VC. Then I'm going to make not having VC illegal.

ILLEGAL IS SAY!!!
===============
@The_Tombo: Pffft, beat score attack mode without using Jin, Nu, or Tager, and THEN we'll talk

But yeah, looking forward to licking your shoes online.
===============
@Orlandun: I'll check tomorrow morning and add you if necessary Get ready!
===============
@Sk8ter_213: Yep, awesome theme is awesome. Clouser is a genius. Hells yes, old school games FTW. I still play Contra regularly!
===============
@BenderUnit22: Well of course not, but narrowing it down from a large list of played games would still be very hard desu.

Nostalgia can certainly be a powerful influence desu. I actually had all of the official Majora's Mask guide book memorized. Yeah, I had somewhat of an obsession with all of the secrets in that game. Word-for-word on some pages too. I was totally creeped out by everything in that game as a child, and the fact that one of the bosses was a gigantic fish you had to get into the water with automatically qualifies it for the I-****-my-pants-in-panic awards. I hate bodies of water with creatures inside. I was literally screaming like a girl in Okami when I fell off an island and into the water where the water dragon was waiting. If I was Hideki Kamiya, I would make an entire game out of that concept. You know, something to do with having to go into the water with gigantic monsters waiting for you...

...wait, I forgot where I was going with this. Um, desu?
===============
@Goeniko: lulz are good.
===============
@galerian86: Your new avatar - it's burned into my soul.

Yeah, I make the rules and then break em Didn't like the gameplay?! I thought it was grand fun!
===============
@NuKkU: Simplicity wins, and MGS3 simply had one of the most emotional and powerful plot of the bunch. That little thought in the back of your mind that tells you that this hero will someday turn into who we all know as Big Boss was an astounding experience.
===============
@ jt4mtb: The love for those two games have combined them into one entity. If I were to split them up, my love would be split as well, and hell - I can't do that!

Or you know, you could just bend the rules a little bit
Posted Aug 21, 2009 4:36 am PT
wtf is a desu
Posted Aug 21, 2009 5:53 am PT
POKEMON!!!!
Posted Aug 21, 2009 7:23 am PT
lol, what I wrote makes barely any sense, I must've been drunk or something desu. I left out half the words desu. Or maybe it got replaced by desu desu.
Posted Aug 21, 2009 7:46 am PT
Benderunit I swear to god, I'm going to desu you so hard!!
Posted Aug 21, 2009 2:57 pm PT
nyoro~n
Posted Aug 21, 2009 8:11 pm PT
I'm glad to see FFX so high up in your list. You saved yourself from a very long lecture and flaming from yours truly.

And y'know, I'm not getting that greatness vibe from FFXIII yet. Maybe because I haven't bathed in every little inch of detail released about it so far like most RPG fans. Hopefully it does wow me like FFX did. I'm very skeptical though. I currently hold a firm belief that the story in FFX can never be outdone. I'd love to be proven wrong though.
Posted Aug 21, 2009 9:55 pm PT
As crazy as ever (actually crazier)
nice top "14" games and number one "are" the best lol
Posted Aug 21, 2009 11:59 pm PT
@BenderUnit22: But drinking + writing = magical things!
===============
@The_Tombo: I'm going to you so hard it is?
===============
@BenderUnit22: brb smoked cheese.
===============
@KH-mixerX: Whew, glad I managed myself out of that one.

I dunno, I haven't had this kind of vibe since FFX. It's not just the setting, but the overall "holy crap this is the next generation, so let's see what Square Enix can pull off" thing going on.
===============
@hassanfadil: I think i could have been crazier.
Posted Aug 22, 2009 3:55 am PT
Damn you and the fact you own a PSP! You know how I love me some rythm games on portable systems!

Man what I wouldn't give for the Celestial Brush. Hell just a white wolf would kick so much ass.

What MGS 4 doesn't get an Otacon just for Liquid's fight at the end?
