For my money, multiple VCRs is the ticket. I have 3, one in each room that I might watch TV. What do you do with Tivo when 3 shows you like are aired at the same time, say Wed at 9PM??? Tape 'em all. Tivo just gives you a puzzled look and utters something like "CANNOT COMPUTE!" And what if you want to watch a show on a different TV than the one you TiVo'ed it on??? With VCRs, it's all fungible. Listen to me know, believe me later. What do I want for X-Mas?? Another couple of VCRs...
