Dear Consumer:
You might think buying a 360 to play Tekken 6 and FFXIII will cost you less than buying a playstation 3 and the two games but the truth is, it's not. After doing simple math, you'll get a larger total when buying a playstation 3 and the two games of course but let me tell you that you're forgetting something.
#1 The cost of reparing a 360 after getting damaged which is very likely to happen costs more than buying a safer and a more secure system such as the playstation 3. If you run out of warrenty, you might need to get a new 360 but what if the new 360 stopped working? Would you buy a new one just to keep playing games? Suppose a cheap 360 costs $200 add to that the expenses of an HDVD player, what if that new $200 stopped working? Will you buy "another" 360 to buy games which are already available on a durable and more powerful system which already comes with not only a HDVD player, but a Blurray player?
#2 Who said the 360 has more games? Biased websites and ads make it look like the 360 "has a bigger library" when the truth is it doesn't. The only difference is that the 360 is getting games EARLIER than some consoles like ps3 and PC. Most of upcoming games on it will be available soon on the above mentioned systems. And not only that, extra content will be available in some games.
#3 Let's not forget the fact that you're still forced to pay to get your 360 online even if you weren't going to use it but getting your ps3 online doesn't cost a cent.
Which one costs more now?

2. The 360 does have more games. XBLA has more games than PSN. There's more JRPG's on 360 than PS3, more shooters, more action adventure games, more WRPG's and the system had a year head start to build a library worth of games.
3. XBL costs a Mcdonald's Meal a month or a pack of cigarettes depending on your vice. It's also a much more robust service...there's a phrase that says "You get what you pay for" and that's never more true than in this situation.
If you want to attack the 360 you should use facts like how MS's first and second party devs are unable to make anything good besides Halo spinoffs and Maybe Fable 2 while Sony has Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword and LBP
360 need it so frequently as to be a main concern for the gamers.
there are very few exclusives now for any system.
The 360 has more mainly when fanboys attempt to change the meaning of words.
If a game is out on more than one system such as the 360 and the PC then it is NO longer an exclusive.
Except when you want to alter reality in a system wars type argument.
"1. the cost of system repairs is absolutely free for 3 years and the customer service since the 1 billion dollar overhaul is excellent. The whole process takes about 5 working days to get a box, ship it off and get a system in return. If you want to look at CS debacles you should look no further than the PS2's DDE and how Sony never did anything to help the customer with that.

I have both consoles, in any case.
1- the #1 reason you gave was just simply pathetic, I know 3 of my friends who have a 360 (2 of them are launch consoles) and none of them had to get it to be repaired, they're still running fine for all I know. This problem was clearly blown out of proportion and I'm getting my 360 with a warranty just in case (like I do with all of my consoles) so this problem won't actually be a problem for me or any consumer who knows how to buy.
2- There IS more games on 360 and much more AAA games, The 360 had a full year start and I don't know anybody who's remotely sane who would say the opposite, especially compared to the PS3.
3- I'll give you that but the 360's online is just about the best thing in online play for video games, please don't compare. Personally I don't think 50$ for a full year is much but that's just me.
-The number of 360 malfunctioning on consumers proves that it's not a singualr case and that there's a big flaw in the way the system was designed. Add to that the modifications MS is intending to add on the system in order to avoid more damages.
-Paying $7 bucks monthly to get your system online is still expensive. It's like paying to test a product when it should be for free. Psychologically, it has a negative effect on consumers.
-The exlusives you mentioned are either flops or are available on PC and PS3.
I think the PS3 is a better system overall.
This is all my opinion of course so you don't have to agree with me.
When you buy a 360 you do get a free month free, then a lot of the big name games also come with free cards such as Halo, Gears, GTA IV... I've had two systems break and bought a lot of bigname games, I almost have a 1/2 a year of free XBL. Then when it's only $50, that's less than the price of a game. I know that I buy at least 3-4 games that I don't actually enjoy each year. If I cut out just one of those games, I'll have paid for my XBL for the year and I'm able to experience something far better than PSN.
And PC gaming and console gaming is not in competition. When NPD data comes out they list console sales and console video game sales and throw the PC data to the side. In the console wars of things, the titles that are exclusive to the 360 console are just as impressive as the ones on PS3. You will never be able to enjoy Mass Effect 1 (not sure on 2 yet), Never enjoy Gears of War 1 or 2, Never enjoy Halo 3 or recon, or Fable 2. All of these games listed are great games.
Yes the 360 has flops like Too Human, but then the PS3 has Lair. For Kameo you have Haze so there are sucky exclusives on both sides.
I own everything. I have a PS3, Wii, 360 and a high end gaming PC. I'm not hurting for games and I wouldn't slander a system with lies or half-truths just because I don't have it.
Xbox 360 : 299$ USD gets you the console and a 60 gig hard drive plus HD cables and a headset and a month of free Xbox Live
Playstation 3 : 399$ USD gets you the console (with everything in it), NO HD cables, and free PSN.
Now since the games are equally priced and the controllers are as far as I know (unless you buy the wired 360 controller), this makes the 360 the defacto cheaper console to play games in high definition. You don't need online to play games. You don't need an HDTV to play games even, but to do it in High Def, you need to spend more for the PS3. Now over the course of the lifetime of the system, if you are an online gamer, it takes a little over 2 years to make up the difference in price. At that point, the PS3 is cheaper, but only if you use Xbox live. The 360 gets 3 years free repairs, that does not count. When you have to pay extra to keep it running, then let's talk, but no one's warranty on the planet has expired yet, seeing has it's not been 3 years since it's release. Yes, the HD-DVD drive was extra, yes movies are extra on both systems, you could add gold rims to a Honda Civic and it would cost more than a Bentley if we want to play that game of adding accessories.
Now I can argue the quality of games all day, that's half the fun of discussing games, but there is no doubt that when it comes down to it, the Xbox 360 is still the cheapest system to buy out there of those two, and everyone does not need everything to fully enjoy a given system.
To semrlus:
All the games you listed with the exception of the upcoming halo game are available on PC. The time it takes a 360 exlusive to come out on PC is very short. The three year free warrenty is only available in the us.
plus you don't need an HDDVD drive to watch HD movies on a 360...you just download them, and with Netflix about to expand that number in a month, it's still smarter to have a 360
GQ long time no see, nice blog, you put some debate, I love it but I have to disagree on somethings.
1- I completely agree on the failure rate, they didn't fix the problem yet and what makes it worse that MS knew about the problem before launch, the warranty exists only in the U.S, although my 360 ( launch console ) doesn't have any problem yet ( knock on wood heheh )
As far as Blu-ray vs HD-DVD, yes the Blu-ray matter more than HDDVD now but at the same time who cares about HD movies? only movies fanatics so I think people who wants to play games are not forced to pay for it.
2- While it is partially true, That is something I disagree with, the games are coming first on the 360 which is way better than waiting 1 year to play the same game and it has more exclusives than PS3 but the gap is becoming smaller evey year.
Let me make an example, in the PS2 era almost all of the multi-console games were released first on the PS2, it is a big advantage for gamers to enjoy games first, MGS3 went to the original Xbox, did it matter after a year of release? no, sales wise and exclusive wise, MGS3 is playstation property still, when someone mentions playstation games, MGS series come to mind, same goes with 360, when someone mentions 360 Gear of War, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata and all games that came to PC or PS3 later are almost irrelevant.
3- I agree on this, paying for live is pointless and I demand making it free just like PSN.
I prefer the PS3 simply because of points 1 and 3, as far as games goes, both is the only way to enjoy gaming this generation of consoles, it is becoming just like Nintendo and Sega in the past, it was the only way to go if people wanted to enjoy games, Sega master system, genesis, nes and snes were the only way to go in the old days.
And well for that 10% I'm buying a laptop for Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Starcraft II, Crysis so why not play games the 360 has on the laptop.. it will look buttloads better on a mobile 9800gts video card.
From my point of view, the lack of a hard drive in the $200 360 Core/Arcade SKU is a much more severe drawback. Granted, 20GB hard drives run at about $50, but how long would that last? I'd consider the much larger 120GB a better investment, but at a price around $150, it almost completely negates the 360's price advantage. Considering that I could upgrade my PS3 to 250GB for less than $100, I call this a ripoff.
As for games, there's no denying that the 360 has more games. With that entire year of lead time that Microsoft gained by skipping QA testing, how could it not? Even without that taken into account, Microsoft's reputation for reaching into their bottomless bank accounts to pay off developers every time a AAA PS3 exclusive makes it's way into the limelight has been legendary since the start of this generation.
Of course, even with the advantage of a larger game library, the quality of those games is entirely subjective. Personally, I found Oblivion and GRAW (which I owned on PC) horrendously boring. Yet, the fanboys in the 360 isle still saw fit to brag out their asses over these games, at least until a year later in Oblivion's case. While I didn't find Gears as boring as the previously mentioned games, it was nonetheless equally overrated.
Concerning online services, I see very little difference between the two services aside from a few extra features on XBL which I wouldn't even use for free, let alone for $50 a year. Overall, PSN is a solid online service that provides me with everything I need as a gamer. While XBL may offer a few more features, at least I don't have to renew a subscription every year just to continue playing online.
For the tl;dr crowd - Sony may have placed a heftier price tag on the PS3, but Microsoft simply took the alternate route of nickel and diming the hell out of their customers. In the end, HD consoles are expensive and anyone who thinks they're getting the cheaper alternative is simply fooling themselves. Regardless of who purchased what console, we all payed out our asses this generation.
ya3nee seriously, Sony could make an announcement to drop all support for the ps3 and you'd still support the console eh? Well quite frankly Sony have lost; instead of taking a leaf out of Nintendo's book they decided to be arrogant and prove that in gaming, three time's NOT the charm.
1. Does it really matter? Blu-ray is, for all intents and purposes, the reason why stupid Sony have lost this gen (other than their arrogance on believing third parties would actually support their expensive console, and forgetting that graphics have NEVER decided the winner of a gen... ah idiotic Sony). I mean blu-ray is really not needed, and it's nowhere near the advancement and leap of VCR to DVD. Really, only movie aficionados care about this. And there's also the fact that the middle east isn't even carrying blu-ray movies yet. hmph, not that I care.
and while it's extremely annoying that 360's break down on you, their is apparently the warranty thing in the states, so you DON'T have to pay to get MS to fix it. Assuming you paid that extra money for the (what-should-be-free) 3 year warranty.
2. you cannot be more wrong in this respect. To say that the 360 doesn't have more games, when it clearly (and unfortunately) does, is very ignorant, and a desperate attempt to make Sony's loss seem less than it is. And to think that said games will actually come to the ps3... heh, I wish. Face the cold hard truth, they won't
and after all it is too late, no matter how desperately you try to point out that most of the 360's rpg's are mediocre, it won't matter to those crazy Japanese, who buy anything rpg. I mean if Dragon Quest is Japan's number one series when it has barely changed ANYTHING from its formula really tells you about the people there. They see rpgs on the 360, they see it's the cheaper console, and they'll buy it. Waiting around to purchase said games on a more expensive ps3 is a big nono for them. And why should they pay $60+ for non photo realistic games when Sony promised us 1080p? Damn liars.
all in all the 360 is the contender for games, and ps3 is not going to make any form of comeback with their silly Little Big Planet (a game that WILL wear thin after 15 minutes) and two dumb shooters (like the market doesn't have enough of those damn things already; I hate the fact that shooters sell and next gen rpging has been ruined or is non existent). I regret this more than anything
3. 360 has a billion online thingamajigs, as for ps3... well I'm not going to make an account any time soon. Here the ps3 should have been able to knock the 360 out of the water, but if Sony were smart enough to work on it, then they wouldn't be failing this gen in the first place now would they? Hundreds of games could be put on the psn, and that's from the first playstation alone! (no ps2 games will ever see the light of day on ps3 I think, especially when the console's like what, almost STILL outselling its older brother?) I mean you have Square's games like Xenogears (already out on Japan's psn I believe) or Parasite Eve one and two (Why don't SE put this???? They're releasing the third one on psp, it only makes since!) and not to mention the hordes of playstation rpgs.
but NOOOOO, Sony insist on screwing themselves up. I for one hate this gen so much. I mean, how IS M$ able to throw so much money around and still not go bankrupt? From 50 mil on GTA 4 to securing exclusives like Tales of Verspia (my gosh I REALLY hate Namco Bandai) where do they come up with it all? heh, probably from Live's $50 subscription fee eh? I'm just glad I missed out on the ps2 era, b/c now I have a ps2 slim from my friend and am playing all the great rpg's, from FF to KH to... hmm well that's it really hehe (I really only trust games from the 'big name' companies.) Most importantly, it's unfortunate that I put this argument in so late, which is always the case with your blogs. I'll just end off by saying: The average, patriotic consumer won't care that you need rechargeable batteries for their 360, or the fact that it will break down. They care about buying the cheaper and (supposed) better American console, and getting a buttload of shooters for it. Well, I guess I'll just have to wait until next gen and make my purchases more wisely. Even though I'll be too old... (but then again, I'm too old now)
I wasn't being cute, she really will eat you.
MS is not focusing on making new exlusives. It's buying other exlusives and that'll hurt it on the long run because the system will not be able to play future games that require larger space and are made specifically for the other system.
ooh asaf 3ala il i39ab, bes the thing is Sony are the ones who have abandoned their fans, not Nintendo. You still seem to be buying into Sony's desperate "please wait" policy, but in this day and age waiting won't cut it. Plus in our culture we're already too old to be gaming, so 5 years down the line... well I just don't see any opportunities for me to game, as much as I'd like to.
Yeah I already mentioned that M$ only support those in the states (and Europe I suppose). but of course that's the price of being in the Middle-East, the most backwards place in the world. Gaming will never be mainstream here, not when we still have other more pressing issues to overcome (but that's for another debate...)
but then again, we don't have blu-ray movies here either, so a Sony ps3 is practically worthless. (only my total movie geek friend is the one I know that orders tons and tons of blu-ray movies from the states or whio-knows-where)
What really worries me is that FF 13 will not have the best quality it can have (for a game that will come out when I'm married for heaven's sakes!) and that FF vs 13, whatever Nomura says, WILL be multi-plat (M$ and their millions won't take no for an answer) There's also the fact the KH3 will be exclusive to the 360, and when that does happen, you WILL see me jump of off the liberation tower, b/c, quite frankly, I'll be upset (hmmm that DOES seem a little melodramatic... but necessary, quite necessary) So all in all, I'm dissapointed with this gen. Of course, handheld gaming has never been better, so that's at least a plus. And of course I'm still playing ps2 games, so that's good too. I won't have to "wait" for Sony's mediocre games while twiddling my thumbs. 1080p my butt...
Blurray is not only used to watch movies on ps3, it's also used for games. It enhances the quality of graphics in games as well as audio and space.
SemiMaster
Well, true, if you want it as multimedia the PS3 is cheaper, and better than a standalone Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player (RIP). But then again, if your 360 breaks down, Microsoft is obligated now to fix it free for you for 3 years from date of purchase, so that's not really fair to say that making it cost more (aside from your downtime). Also, the 360 just has more games (most likely due to it being out earlier), it has more exclusives too, which is the key point. And even if they are also on the PC, they aren't on the PS3.
But you're 100% right about the PSN being free vs. paying for Xbox Live. But you could also say that the PS3 doesn't come with HD cables, HDMI or Component. And I'm not pro 360, I'm on my 3rd one, just saying the facts.
