I just can't help but feel that Grand Theft Auto IV's rise to glory is overblown. How can a game whose main goal is to provide a violent and sexual power fantasy mostly geared towards adult males be considered even better than a game whose main goal is to provide a beautiful, emotional experience that everyone can enjoy? The latter description refers to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was recently bested by GTAIV as the best rated game of all time after almost 10 years.

GTAIV, while providing inmersive gameplay and wonderful though-out mechanics is still a game that puts providing a power fantasy over providing a deep, emotional experience (and accomplishes it well). In other words, whatever such experience may result from GTAIV is a side-effect, not the main, intended effect. OoT, on the other hand, while providing an epic power fantasy as The Hero of Time, is still a game that puts providing a wholesome deep, emotional experience over providing said fantasy (and accomplishes it well). In other words, whatever power fantasy may rersult from OoT is a side-effect, not the main, intended effect.

By "deep, emotional experience" I mean an experience where experimenting emotions such as happiness, sadness, sorrow, sympathy, apathy, awe, etc. is the intended purpose. "Power fantasies" themselves do not provide these experiences, since they aim to make people feel the "rush" and "glory" of being the best at something, or being (by definition) powerful in some sense. The "power fantasy" appeals to feelings that are simple and physical, the "deep, emotional experience" appeals to emotions that are complex and mental (unique to human nature).

So while GTAIV can provide the emotional experience, it certainly seeks to provide the power fantasy before anything else. OoT, on the other hand, may provide the power fantasy as a side-effect, but it clearly aims to provide the emotional experience first and foremost with its storytelling and character development.

This is not to say shooters can't have different priorities: Gears of War, BioShock, and the Metal Gear, Metrod Prime and Half-Life series all have the emotional experience first, and the power fantasy second, since they all shine first and foremost for their atmospheres, stories, and cast of characters, and second (a very close second) for whatever power fantasy they may provide. The fact that all these games take place in fictional worlds may very well be an indicator of how poorly the industry has managed to project realistic shooter experiences so far.

Fictional worlds can have power fantasies as first priority as well: Halo 2 and Resistance: Fall of Man are good examples. While the Halo series as a whole is strongly story-driven, in Halo 2 the focus clearly shifted to providing the (online) power fantasy over the emotional experience.

So the question I'd like answered is this: which is more important, the power fantasy or the emotional experience? To this current age in videogame culture, which is most important? The choice is apparently the power fantasy, if GTAIV's scores are to be believed. Then, is this really the kind of videogame culture we want? Opinions are kindly welcomed.

To me, the best games provide both, but the emotional experience must come first. That's what a masterpiece is all about: providing both, with the emotional experience as first priority. Great games with power fantasy as first priority are always remembered, but quickly put away or resold. Great games with emotional experiences as first priority are also always remembered, but are also usually preserved much longer than other games, both in our shelves in our minds.

I have to ask, have you played GTAIV through to the end? I haven't yet, but I do notice that many of the reviews of GTAIV list its involving story as a key reason they scored the game so high. Based on what I've read, the critics see more in this game than just a "power fantasy".

It will get old in time.

You know, GTA IV isn't all about sex and violence and the story is deeper than that.

I don't really care though. I did enjoy both game(I did enjoy GTA IV more than OoT for the record though), but I don't beleive either game deserved any of the tens they got and they certainly arent the best games I've ever played. Far, far, far from it.

You're pretty right about all of it really, and I'll never understand the reviews for GTA IV...ever.

Considering the fact you've never played it, I can see why you don't understand the reviews.

I haven't played it yetm so what I will say here may be wrong. But I don't see anything groundbreaking in this game, and I always thought that to beat OOT a game would have to be as overwhelming and innovative as OOT was in 1998.

Meh. I haven't played it and probably wont be able to for quite a while. Maybe in like a year or two. Possibly 3, whenever I can get around to get a Xbox 360. Too busy with other stuff to bother.

But my take the 10 score is I don't think GTA 4 deserved a 10. It maybe one of the greatest games ever. but not a 10.

OoT got a 10 because like what Pierst said. It was pretty overwhelming. Just the sheer size of the game was amazing back then. It was a standout, almost no game matched it in how amazing it was.

GTA 4 maybe amazingly awesome in everyway. But it isn't that overwhelming because we've experienced so many amazing games in this recent year and last year. It seems to be just another game to add to the " Friggin awesome games " pile.

But then again I may possibly be wrong. I haven't played it yet soo...ya.

"if GTAIV's scores are to be believed" ... dude the game is pretty good, srly. I already have 39 hours in it and I have basically not even touched the mp. Whether you want to label it as the best game ever is up to you (witch I dont, heh) but there is no doubt that it is very, very, fun. Plz play it people.

I've played GTA3 a good amount with my friend... and I must saying, it's no OoT, It may be good, but no 10. OoT got a 10 because it was so different, so amazing. On the other hand, GTAIV feels so similar to it's predecessors. Not to mention I really don't like what it teaches people... I understand life is about sex a lot nowadays, but do we really need 5-15 year olds getting into that? No to mention the whole gang/kill the cops stuff. I understand most people would say "that's the parents faults!!!". Well, not only is this not always true, but it's still terrible they are exposed to it.

According to your gamer tag, you've never played GTA IV/
And I don't think a game must be rated E to earn 10. Any game should have a chance, regardless if it's rated M.
And beleive it or not, GTA is not porn. Yes I know it's surprising, but it's actually a game.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone; they're very much appreciated.

well thats what opinions are about. and imo GTA4 is better than the Zelda game. for GTA provides what I'm looking for. tbh it's hard to compare the two because like you said they both concentrate on different aspects. and I think the review scores give a sense of completeness than an attempt to meassure ones idea of an master piece.

I have completed the GTAIV campaign once, and I have to say that the "power fantasy" aspect was not really what kept me so immersed in the game. The story of Niko Bellic is powerful, but not necessarily in a way that empowers the player. In fact, throughout most of the game you tend to feel as if you've been accidentally swept up into a world of killing and crime and all you'd really like to get out of it is some peace.

The very experience of GTAIV is a social commentary packaged within a deeply involving story. If anything I think what makes this game so relevant is its reflection of what life really is like for some people. If you disregard the shootings and the drug deals, GTAIV presents you with a world of careless, reckless people all living by their own agenda. They want the fastest cars, the fastest women, the best high, the swankest home, and the most control over others around them. If that doesn't say something about the United States then I don't really know what does.

Funny how you mentioned Halo 2... I always thought that FPS's went wrong about the time of that game. They seemed to give more relevence to the importance of graphical power and the need for more of a global multiplayer. I can remember the days of playing Goldeneye with about ten of my closest friends from school and loving every moment of it. But, even then OOT was a close rival for my favorite game of that time.

Bakalou Halo2 added many gameplay features which the original didn't have so not sure what your point is?

Seriously Oot is still my all time favourite, but GTA4 is also way up there, but they aren't in the same league.. I can't even believe anyone would try to compare them with each other. They're nothing alike, and that's okay, they're both great in their own way. And I see what you mean with the emotional experience, The Legend Of Zelda'll always be in my mind, and probably always remain the greatest game ever made, I can't possibly see anything top it. As for GTA, by the time GTA6 arrives GTA4 will be forgotten. Not to bully Rockstar, 'cause I am in total awe of GTA right now, I love that game. But what I'm saying is just the truth.
Nice blog, really gets you thinking.

I believe it is succesful because of the depraved moral character of many people. That may seem shallow and too sweeping, but thats my opinion.
