**Quick update: I'm no longer working at Edelman...looking into other opp's atm.

Just heard back yesterday--I got a job offer from Edelman, Microsoft's PR agency. I'll be working on the Xbox Games team to help Microsoft launch its major first-party titles, write its press releases, and prepare for tradeshows like E3 Here's an article about how Edelman worked with Microsoft to launch Halo 3 (link).

This is a really exciting opportunity for me and one that I've been working towards for awhile now. I really think that games are the next great art form, and I'm looking forward to making my own impact towards expanding its popularity.

I think the first project I'll be helping out with is Fable 2. I won't be able to talk about the projects I'm working, though, (apart from what's publicly known) as I'll be under strict NDA.

It's crazy to think, though, that 2 years ago I was playing Fable, and now I'm helping to launch its sequel

For those of you who are already in the game industry or who plan to be in a few years--hopefully we'll get a chance to meet in person!

Nice, congratulations!

That sounds like a really interesting job actually, could be lots of fun coming up with new ways to market and hype up the games. And you've already got some experience in hype anyway, from SW! lol, it's good for something apparently.

Good luck with everything, I'm sure it will all work out well. And if Fable 2 flops, I will blame it on you.

lmao -- thanks TVB. Does Australia have big game conventions? Maybe I'll be lucky enough to go down there some time?

Note to self: fuzzy is teh bias

Seriously though congrats, I've always thought it would be cool to work in PR/marketing.

Congratulations man, wish you the best, lemming

And don't forget to give us free copies of Fable 2

Posted Aug 20, 2008 11:40 pm PT
Oh and congrats you didn't join when they would have made you part of the Too Human Team.

Are you serious? Wow, CONGRATULATIONS! Seriously that's amazing bro. Good luck, and I know you'll do excellent. You're one of the most level headed, smartest people I know here on the forums, and not to mention just a really cool guy. (Is MS going to give you free XBL Gold now? ) Hey, maybe when I start moving and finding where I want to be in the gaming industry, you'll help me get a job, right? *jabs you with his elbow* Seriously though, congrats bud, and good luck. It sounds like a really cool job if you ask me, and ... You are officially a lemming, congrats. *walks away proud and jealous*

Aww man thats my dream to get into games....
Posted Aug 21, 2008 12:48 am PT
Wow! Congratulations! Thats really great!

Don't become a lemming now!
Posted Aug 21, 2008 2:26 am PT
Wow! Thats Awesome man, congratulations enjoy the perks of being the PR dude.

Awesome! I'm actually looking at majoring in PR, so make sure to write up a blog every now-and-then to let us know how it's treating you. I'll definitely read 'em. Congratulations!
Posted Aug 21, 2008 4:03 pm PT
Wow, congrats it sounds very interesting. I hope you do well!

PBSnipes: yeah...I can't write code worth beans, so marketing/PR is the only useful area besides journalism where I can contribute to games

HAZE-Unit: lol...your copy is in the mail

jg4xchamp: yep, I think I'll run across Peter, Cliff B., and other dev's who work on first-party titles.

yoshi: Thanks man...you are without a doubt one of the best posters I know too What kinda work do you want to do in the game industry? Development? Journalism? PR/Marketing?

jay_rock: "Don't give up"...that's what someone told me while I was doing informational interviews. If you want it and you work hard at it, you'll get in.

sam280992: lol, I think I got over the SW classifications awhile ago. Though since I'll be promoting Xbox games, I'll doubtlessly be somewhat biased

Jynxor: thanks buddy

Cry0Tek: For sure...good luck deciding on your major! And even if you decide to major in something other than PR, keep in mind that you can still get into the field after graduation. I majored in political science and minored in philosophy. Hiring managers are mainly looking for strong writers who can communicate effectively and think quickly on their feet

Blommen: appreciate it, man

I'm thinking of trying to get into development, but I know little programming. Though I'm taking a Java class this semester at college, so I'll give it a whirl. Another thing I've kind of felt I could try is Marketing too, I don't know but I find it appealing, and I think I could do well there. I love math too, and I think if anything I maybe could try something in programming of the financing/marketing of gaming? Lastly, another thing I think there's more to the industry than what I know? I mean, maybe I don't have to be in the development, but I could be someone just WORKING for the company in some form? XD I don't know, but I'd like a pretty big part in the company some day too, you know? I'll see, I'm trying to explore this semester with classes, so we'll see what happens. Design has also been something I wanted to get into, I used to be into drawing albeit I haven't done it much since I've honestly had no... muse I guess. I'd like to try level or character design, but I also admit I don't think I'm that artistic to do so. Bah, I'm so undecided right now... I'll hopefully know well enough in the near future XD Also thanks for the compliment.

yeah, don't worry too much...I didn't know what I was going to do until my senior year.

My advice would be to take the time to enjoy college and use it as an opportunity to explore what you like...eventually your aspirations will naturally match with your unique skill set

I still can't get over it, it's really nice to see someone get there dream job. Who knows what the future holds for you? Climb that corperate ladder I expect to see you as head of MS game division in 5 years. I'm marking my callendar.
Posted Aug 21, 2008 11:12 pm PT
Oh you lucky, lucky guy. Congratulations! Sounds like an "ok" job to me. All my best with your start....Fable 2 better be good, or I'll hunt you down as well
Posted Aug 22, 2008 7:16 am PT
wow... Grats! I wish you the best man. Hope I can get a job in the industry some day. that'd be awesome.
Posted Aug 22, 2008 9:53 am PT
That's awesome man. Congratulations, and best of luck in the future. Don't turn into too much of a lemming now - your MGS4 thread will be ashamed of you. Ah, the game industry has just swallowed up one of the best Gamespotters ever....

Oh and if you don't mind me asking, what did you major in during college?
Posted Aug 22, 2008 11:44 am PT
Nice! When you get up there high in the ranks (or if you could do it now), make sure all the marketing campaigns are actually *artistic* as well as informational. I don't like the current state of affairs with movie marketing where you just take a mugshot of the actor and chuck the movie title et voila, a movie poster. Video games are taking that route as well, and it's much too fast.

Jynxor: haha, thanks man. 5 years isn't much time Seriously though, I'm just glad to have my foot in the door--we'll see where life leads from here

Syrinx: lol thanks...now I'm scared for my life!

Orin: TY, and best of luck chasing your career dreams too

MoldOnHold: lmao @ the MGS4 thread comment...I majored in political science--it's a major that emphasizes writing, which I think is helpful if you're interested in PR

FrozenLiquid: hmm...interesting statement...definitely something to keep in mind. Although I think some game trailers do show artistic strength (i.e. the Gears 2 "Rendezvous with Death" trailer and the MGS4 and Bioshock trailers)

I dunno if we have any big gaming cons here. Honestly? The only source of gaming for me is Gamespot. It's like never discussed in Australia for some reason.

But the industry is growing rapidly and I do think we'll get something major soon and if you do come, make sure you come to Melbourne as every other city doesn't have me in it! I'll buy you a beer. The legal age is 18 here...

What part of the US are you from again? Apparently, Texans are quite similar to us Aussies so if you're from there I think you could fit in well. You can rent a kangaroo while you're here to ride to and from work. And obviously, I'll take you to wrestle a crocodile, because that's how we roll in Australia.

You crack me up dude. You have the same random sense of humor that I do.

I'm from Seattle--the stereotype of Seattlelites is that we're latte-drinking, artsy-fartsy, laid-back liberals...which applies to me for the most part except I don't drink coffee
Posted Aug 23, 2008 5:56 am PT
lol, it's not exactly a good sense of humour to have. Are you like me in the sense that people meet you and they're like 'oh yeah, he seems alright' and then 1 week later they're thinking 'hmm... little crazy' and then a month later (assuming they've stuck around that long) it's 'freakin' psycho'. lol, I feel sorry for all my friends.

Seattle... interesting. I like that stereotype actually, although Melbourne's somewhat conservative for the most part unfortunately, but we're very laid back so that's a big plus, since people here are uncomplicated...

I don't really drink coffee either. 1) I don't like it, and 2) I've had it spilt on me 5 times (by other people... accidentally - I think). I'd understand if it happened once, but clearly the drink does not agree with me.
Posted Aug 24, 2008 6:05 am PT
lol...man, you have some bad luck w/ coffee drinkers.

Btw, you should post a new blog soon so I can invade it
Posted Aug 24, 2008 1:42 pm PT
It's been a whiel fuzzy... Anyway, I'm really very glad to know this thing happening to you. God bless you on this great opportunity that came your way. Be sure to make good on Fable 2.
Posted Aug 26, 2008 1:28 am PT
Thanks Fantasy Gamer
Posted Aug 26, 2008 8:21 pm PT
Ah! Well, I am a pretty proficient writer (not the math type at all). My brain works with words very well, so I should be alright in that sense. Yep, looking at taking quite a few communications courses next year.
Posted Aug 27, 2008 10:25 am PT
Woah! Congratulations! That is awesome man! :O
Posted Aug 27, 2008 4:22 pm PT
Cry0tek: cool...good luck w/ those! Writing-oriented classes were always my favorites in school

Mordred: TY man! And we gotta Halo 3 it up again sometime
Posted Aug 28, 2008 12:28 am PT
what are you working on? you can pm me, I wont tell lol.
but congratulations, and best of luck! Hope you have some fun!
