The gaming world has never been a cheap one. The technology on which our games are built upon is forever changing and becoming more advanced. Yet even today we still have to choose. I'm a man who would rather buy both than choose a favourite. I like to experience every "next big thing" that the gaming industry throws at me. This however leads me to a dilemma. Whenever I buy a new game or even log onto Gamespot I find myself asking "Where do I draw the line?" Allow me to explain. I'm a proud owner of a Playstation 3, a Playstation 2 and a Gamecube and I have a five year old PC. I have every intention of buying an XBox 360 when I have more free time on my hands. Aside from the rather obvious exclusives that must be played there are also games such as Tomb Raider: Legend, "Tom Clancy's: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty 2. These may seem like small fish in a big pond but my way of looking at it is simple, Why buy Legend for PS2 when it's better on 360? Why buy a Splinter Cell game for the Playstation when it gets noticeably better review scores on Microsoft's pride and joy? So while most people will take a side in the console war I'll shed the extra three hundred euro to sleep better at night. Another, much bigger, issue lies in PC gaming. This is the antichrist of the gaming world. This is an area in which there really is no limit and this is what I think about I think I've gone too far. The prospect of buying a new PC genuinely worries me. A person can spend quite literally tens of thousands of euro on a new PC and it would be out of date before it would be taken out of the box. How on Earth is a guy like me supposed to buy a PC on a college student's budget when this can still happen? How can I, in good conscience spend two thousand euro on a PC when there's a chance it won't play the latest games? In my perfect world PCs are released every four years and can play any game that is designed to be played on a PC. All PC technology would be treated in the same way game consoles are and because of this it would be sold at a feasible price. While I'm speaking of a perfect world there would be no such thing as an exclusive. There would be one console. It would play Blu-Ray, have free internet and play any game that wasn't designed for the PC, fully backward compatible. However I would not include the Wii in this because this doesn't compete, it just aims at a different market. I dream of a world without fanboys and without unnecessary choices. Games would not be ported and people would not miss out on games because it only came out for the PS3 or vice versa. Thoughts?

Very nice read right there. I must admit i can be a fanboy for my PS3 and turn my nose to the 360 or other console. I think this is bred into gamers because of the competition that is started between exclusive developers and the companys like Sony and Microsoft.
I share your vision of a perfect (gaming) world in which there is one console for gaming and everything else you listed but the harsh, cold reality of that is that money and greed is ruling the gaming world. We may not see it when we sit down cosily in front of our LCD or Plasma screens for a session on our favourite game but its there. Its a shame and a lot of the time us gamers get screwed over because of it.
Anyway lol. Interesting read and sparks a lot of sub conversations. Nice

Nice read; I agree with you, but imo we would be playing in a (near) perfect gamingworld if Microsoft would have kept it's nose out of consolegaming. Economics taught me that it's better to have 1 leader and many followers, and that's not how the market is now.. now we're stuck in a face-off between competitors who are all trying to get their hands on exclusives with the sole purpose of harming the people that bought a different console and/or trying to persuade the same people into buying one of their consoles.

Intresting article,I think that fanism as I call it is a must for gaming, otherwise people won't get into certain games and gaming would become boring.

ok first of all...im surprised ur thinking of buying the xbox360...from ur posts i thought u were against it.....and yes i agree with everything u said..it is confusing BUT...u have a pc and im guessing u like playing games on it but what worries u is games come out and sometimes u cant play them on ur pc coz u need a new 1....my suggestion is...u upgrade ur hardware instead of buying a new pc...u get a better graphic card and a new physics card..(only if ur computer can handle it) what kind do u have???if u do upgrade ur hardware then u shouldnt have any problems with the games u choose...and do what i do...i choose certain categories for certain consoles...example i get rpg games for pc...first person shooter for xbox..3rd person shooter sometimes xbox sometimes pc...u get the drill

Yeah I'm a bit like that, I'm not buying any Tomb Raiders, Tom Clancy's or Call of Dutys until I have a 360. Oh I have a Dell, I mainly use it for college but it's ok for playing some older games. However games like Mafia are too old and games like Far Cry are too new so it's very aggravating. Thanks for reading by the way.

Over here it's about three hundred euro for an Elite which isn't too bad.

Good blog. I pretty much steer clear of PC gaming for the reasons you said among others. The problem is, I look at the current consoles today and I see them heading more into a PC direction, and further away from the traits we usually associate with "game consoles". I think Microsoft has a lot of the "blame" for that (depending on whether you think it's a bad thing or not, I think it's a bad thing but most people probably think it's a good thing). Truth be told, I'm not even really into the new consoles that much. I think they've underperformed both in terms of quality and quantity of games. I stick with the PS2 or earlier, at least for now.

I agree with you to an extent, I felt that when the PS3 was first released it was a little bit of a letdown. Like it was originally was meant to cater for seven pads instead of four, the lack of backward compatability is very disappointing and the Dual Shock was (at the time) discontinued.
