Having just finished writing two recaps I was wondering. As mentioned in a previous blog, I think writing one is a lot of work so I'm curious to see how other people do this.

I write the recap while watching the episode for the first time and I wonder whether that doesn't spoil some of the enjoyment of watching the show. Basically, I watch a scene and write it down; sometimes I watch the scene again to write down a quote or to listen to a name again. Then on to the next scene, etc. ec. etc. Do people watch it in full first and write a recap during their second time watching it? Do people take notes while watching it first before writing the recap?

How do YOU do it??

What shows and movies did I watch, you ask?

Well

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Despite some glowing reviews, I don't get this movie. It's too artsy for my taste. Some funny moments but not enough to endure this movie. It is however, the first time I've seen Owen Wilson act

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Beginning

Surprisingly enjoyable, if you like this kind of movie, of course

Lars and the Real Girl

Another quirky movie, it seems to be my favourite word to describe movies Maybe that says something about my taste in movies LOL Ryan Gosling was very good in this though !!

Step up and Step up 2

Part one had the better script (relatively speaking) but part 2 had the better dance moves.

White Nights

Unsirprisingly, they don't make this kind of movie any more. Some odd turns in the script but enjoyable, if only to see a part of history.

Lawn Dogs

While beautifully shot and featuring good acting, this is another movie that I simply don't get. What was the script writer or the director trying to say ??? There are so many mixed messages in this movie that it's hard to make sense of it. BTW, it's difficult to imagine this little girl growing up to become a diva in The O.C.

The Leage of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Melodramatic and grandiose but fun at times if you ignore the odd mish-mashof literary characters combined in this movie.

Catch me if you can

Another Spielberg gem and even though I''m not the bigggest Tom Hanks fan, he was OK in this. Leo was great.

Phew, I'm surprised I've got time to go to work and watch telly but I do I watched the usual tv shows, which I'm not going to link to because I've done that a few times already. They are: The Tudors, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica and Greek,

I'm glad the staff at tv.com listened to its members and decided not to duplicate guides. I think most editors can certainly live with the interim solution. I hope CNET makes a bit more money available to get more DEV staff and implement a proper solution soon !!

Small typo in your sub count there. :p

Originally I watched an episode and wrote a recap while watching it a second time.
Nowadays I watch it, stop, type, go back for quotes and that stuff. That doubles the time for an episode for me.
As long as I love the show, it doesn't matter to me if I only watch the episode or if I recap it.
When I only watch it, I hit pause from time to time as well, as I'm usually submitting other stuff and sometimes I can't concentrate on both. So it really doesn't matter to me.

Probably the most efficient for me is to write during the first run and rewind where necessary, then proofread and post. If any quotes really stick out, add that to the bottom of the note. This has worked well especially with the children's videos except when I'm not allowed to rewind, then oh well.

The other method is jotting down notes on scratch paper but then I can't read my own writing months later, and might end up having to rewatch the episode then.

Then there's rewriting / improving an existing one. There, I can focus on spelling or grammar, and correct the details.

If you'd rather just watch the episode straight through first-run, that's fine too, although then you have to make sure the recap doesn't spoil things until it's time. I see a lot of recaps where people's names are conveniently plugged in but are not supposed to be known yet until the end of the episode.

I don't recap much, but if it's a new show I don't write on my initial viewing - it's written (with a lot of pausing) on the second viewing and then I may do a third viewing for verification. I do other subs in the middle, such as quotes and such, so as not to completely waste that time.

That's a lot of movies you've seen - all since your last blog?

Dj, typo edited So, you recap like me these days.
Angus, I also find it difficult not to add info from later on in the ep, which is probably why I write recaps on the first viewing, I can't spoil what I don't know
Lin, I can imagine, if people were with me while I was recapping, they'd go crazy.
Mrn, Yep, all movies since my last blog. What can I say, it's been slow at work

Probably why I don't write many recaps. I've only ever done a few. They're all half hour shows I've re watched several times because I really like them and they are saved on tape, DVD or file for easy access to get finer details. It usually took me a few days to write one and they really hurt when they're rejected. I wouldn't touch even hour long shows for recap, let alone a movie.

Yeah I thought TCM: The Beginning was alright . The bloodletting was way too much to serve any real purpose at times, but generally it wasn't too bad , and it's nice to see a backstory to the series' villains. Although **Spoiler**, I'm not a fan of films when the villains win and the heroes lose .

Eventhough I'm not a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, I really enjoyed Catch Me If You Can and his performance in it . I think it's actually my favourite Spielberg film of this decade .

I don't do recaps, not because I don't want to it's just I don't have time, but If I did I would have to like watch it twice or even look back to remember...maybe one day I will and will see how it turns out Jay!!

Recaps never get done by me, I used to do a few and I watched it and then recapped it, fast forwarding through it to bits I can't remember.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a great film, I got The Pianist through the post the other day which has to be one of my favourite films...

I have to do my re-caps while I watch the first time or else I do the scenes out of order and that makes the editors cranky
